REFUERZO TERCER PERÍODO LÍMITES DE FUNCIONES INTRODUCCIÓN Cálculo infinitesimal Designación conjunta para el cálculo diferencial, integral y de variaciones; en principio fue el calculo ingenuo con magnitudes infinitamente pequeñas; en la actualidad es el cálculo mediante límites El concepto de límite marcó una gran diferencia entre las matemáticas fundamentales y el cálculo. El nacimiento del cálculo infinitesimal permitió el desarrollo de ideas importantes en matemáticas y física. Conocer la velocidad y la aceleración de un objeto a partir de la posición o conocer la posición a partir de la velocidad y la velocidad a partir de la aceleración, involucra procesos propios del cálculo. Los límites son importantes para estudiar el comportamiento de datos que se han modelado mediante ecuaciones matemáticas, como crecimiento de poblaciones, desintegración de materiales radiactivos, inversiones de capital y velocidades límites alcanzadas por cuerpos que caen desde una altura dada. Cuando, por ejemplo, un paracaidista de masa (m), cae por la acción de la gravedad (g), la resistencia del aire logra disminuir la velocidad de caída. La velocidad del paracaidista en función del tiempo, está dada por la ecuación:
