Professional person is one #ho engages in an acti'ity that re-uires as specialised and comprehensi'e education. and is moti'ated by a strong desire to ser'e humanity! Professional thin4s and acts in a manner that brings fa'our upon the indi'idual and the entire profession! Professional. besides technically competent. shall ha'e a positi'e attitude to#ard life that is continually reinforced by educational accomplishment and professional ser'ice! Professionalism is a #ay of thin4ing and li'ing rather than an accumulation of learning! Professionalism cannot be taught by stating a code of ethics nor by memorising a set of rules! It is depends on the indi'idual attitude to achie'e it! 0 strong professional sense is of undoubted benefit to the profession concerned in terms of morale and 'ocational satisfaction! It is also a fact that the community benefits #hen it is ser'ed by a professional #hose standing is recognised. in terms both of status and re#ards! It is through the de'elopment of a strong professional attitude that the professional man is moti'ated to gi'e his biggest contribution to the community! It is probable that professional attitude and professional moti'ation are prere-uisities to community recognition and to a reasonable le'el of re#ard. but the one depends 'ery much upon the other! Ethics means something more than la# and morals. it carries an additional connotation of rightness! The code. therefore. is not a list of rules to go'ern e'ery problem of conduct. nor is it a broad statement of ideals! It is a statement off the principles of rightness. of broad scope. and #ith enough detail to enable an intelligent man to deduce for himself the course of his o#n professional conduct! The essence of all professional codes is that the professional man must be #orthy. through his conduct. of the trust placed in him by the community and the colleague! This gi'es rise to a uni'ersal rule of life for e'ery engineer #ho spires to true professional status! So that to act in e'ery situation in a manner that #ill add to the confidence and esteem in #hich his profession is held by the community! "epending on the IEM regulations is not the best #ay to create the professionalism actions! Training and easily s4ills in term of professional engineer is important to de'elop the personality of engineer! In addition. engineers de'elop ne# technologies solutions and responsible to specify the problem. conducting. narro#ing research. analysing criteria. finding. and so on! Therefore. preparation in term of somatic and mental is one of the main factors that contribute for the professional ethic later!

the clients. industry players and public are also demanding for 'alued engineering design. front end engineering design %3EE"&. >reen buildings and etc! In other #ords. the industry is becoming more demanding! 8e need to cope #ith latest de'elopment of technology. ne# 4no#ledge and open to its application! 6y continuing study and de'elop our competence. only can #e 4eep our pace to pro'ide e(cellent ser'ices to clients and public from all aspect such as safety. reliability. 'alued for money #or4s. contemporary design and not ,eopardiing the en'ironment! 6y continuing professional de'elopment. #e enhance our competence and compete confidently to secure ,obs and maintain business prospects! 6y becoming more competent. #e could achie'e professionalism and do not need unethical approaches! =! Informer or Enforcer such as 6oard of Engineers. Malaysia There are sometimes some ?bad apples@! Therefore. there must be an enforcement system in place! ?6ad apples@ are li4e small moles. but catch most attention and could be a crisis once appear and not be remo'ed! In Malaysia. 6oard of Engineers %6EM& is the regulatory body to register and deregister engineers! There are also mechanism and reasons. stipulated inside 2egistration of Engineers 0ct ;ABC %0ct ;=D& %2E0&. ho# an unethical offences that can lead to suspension or cancellation of registration of an engineer! o#e'er. 6EM does not able to play her roles and responsibilities unless there are #histle blo#ers and the similar mechanism #ithin Institution of Engineers Malaysia %IEM&! 6y adhering to IEM rules and regulations. #e could abide by most of the regulations by 6EM and 2E0 #hich both are reference for engineers to maintain professionalism! F! >uidance or Mentor system 9oung engineers are dri'ers of the industry and profession in future! It is relati'ely easy for them to ac-uire academic -ualification and technical e(pertise under super'ision of a registered professional engineer! o#e'er. both academic and technical s4ills are not total for professionalism! Professionalism shall include ethical beha'iour too! ence. it is of paramount important that super'isor to monitor and guide their trainee the ethical practices #hen handling pro,ect and bear in mind his obligation to his clients and duties to public and en'ironment at large!
