Mechanism of  Action

Bactericidal: Inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall causing cell death.

Indication

Lowers respiratory infections caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenza, E. coli, Enterobacter aerogenes. Intra-abdominal infections caused by E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae

Contraindication

Contraindicated with allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins. Use cautiously with renal failure, lactation, pregnancy

Side-Effects

CNS: Headache, dizziness, lethargy

Drug to Drug Interaction

Increased neprotoxocity with aminoglycosides

GI: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, pseudomembranous colitis

Increase bleeding effects with oral anticoagulants

HEMATOLOGIC: bone marrow depression  – dec. WBC, platelets, Hct

Disulfiram-like reactions may occur if alcohol is taken

LOCAL: pain, inflammation of IV Site OTHER: superinfections, disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol

Nursing Responsibilities

BEFORE: Do Skin Testing into the intradermal area Protect Drug from light Do not mix ceftriaxone with other antimicrobial drug DURING: Use a separate syringe when giving this drug Have Vitamin K available in case of  hypoprothrombinemia occurs AFTER: Discontinue if  hypersensitivity occurs Monitor Blood levels in patients taking this drug
