ALLOWABLE TOLERANCES FOR PIPE THREADS SHALL BE PER TABLE 1. ALL PIPE THREADS ARE TO MEET AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSTITUTE (ANSI) B1.20.1 AND ARE TO BE CHECKED WITH THE CORRECT WORKING RING OR PLUG GAGE. ALLOWABLE TOLERANCE WILL BE PLUS OR MINUS ONE TURN. ALL PIPE TAPPED HOLES SHOULD BE REAMED BEFORE TAPPING WITH A REAMER HAVING A TAPER OF 0.75 INCH PER FOOT. WHEN ASSEMBLING JOINTS, USE PROPER THREAD SEALANT, ENSURE PROPER THREAD ENGAGEMENT AND PROPER HAND TIGHT ENGAGEMENT PRIOR TO FINAL WRENCH MAKE-UP OF JOINT.

VERIFICATION OF PIPING RING MANIFOLD ASSEMBLIES
4.4.1
PIPING RING MANIFOLD ASSEMBLIES ARE DEFINED AS CIRCULAR OR POLYGONAL SHAPED PIPING ASSEMBLIES THAT ENCIRCLE THE GAS TURBINE EITHER FULLY OR PARTIALLY AS VIEWED ON THE PIPING ARRANGEMENT DRAWING END OR FRONT VIEW.
4.4.2
PIPING RING MANIFOLDS SHALL BE ASSEMBLED AND THE FIT –UP VERIFIED IN A STRAIN FREE CONDITION BY THE SUPPLIER. CENTERLINE HORIZONTAL & VERTICAL DIMENSIONS SHALL BE MEASURED AND VERIFIED TO CONFORM TO THE PIPING ARRANGEMENT DRAWING CORRESPONDING DIMENSIONS WITHIN A TOLERANCE OF +/-0.5 INCH (12MM).
4.4.3
FLEXIBLE METAL HOSES SHOULD NOT BE INSTALLED ON THE PIPING RING MANIFOLD ASSEMBLIES DURING THE DIMENSIONAL VERIFICATION PROCESS.
4.4.4
A MINIMUM OF FOUR (4) CENTERLINE DIMENSIONS SHALL BE MEASURED, RECORDED, AND SUBMITTED TO THE GE SOURCING QUALITY REPRESENTATIVE FOR APPROVAL PRIOR TO RELEASE FOR SHIPMENT. THE CENTERLINES SHALL BE REASONABLY SPACED TO VERIFY THE ENTIRE RING ASSEMBLY.

BOLT TO NUT TIGHTENING TO BE FINAL TIGHTENED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE VALUES SHOWN IN TABLE V. THIS TIGHTENING PROCEDURE IS DETAILED AS FOLLOWS: 1. INSTALL THE GASKET ON THE FLANGE SEATING SURFACE AND BRING THE MATING FLANGE IN CONTACT WITH THE GASKET. 2. FLANGE ALIGNMENT AND PARALLELISM IS CRITICAL TO A LEAK FREE ASSEMBLY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT NO MORE THAN 30% OF THE REQUIRED BOLT STRESS IS ACHIEVED ON THE INITIAL SET. SHOULD THIS OCCUR, SERIOUS DAMAGE CAN BE DONE TO THE SPIRAL WOUND GASKET AND SUBSEQUENT TIGHTENING CANNOT OFFSET THE DAMAGE. AFTER FOLLOWING THIS SEQUENCE, A FINAL TIGHTENING SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN A CLOCKWISE BOLT-TO-BOLT SEQUENCE TO ENSURE THAT ALL BOLTS HAVE BEEN EVENLY STRESSED.

BY FOLLOWING THE ABOVE SEQUENCE, A REASONABLY EVEN COMPRESSIVE FORCE CAN BE EXERTED ON THE GASKET. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE VARYING FRICTIONAL CONDITIONS OF NEIGHBORING BOLTS AND THE FLUCTUATIONS IN STRESS LEVELS OF BOLTS, WHICH OCCUR AS THE BOLTS ARE INDIVIDUALLY TIGHTENED AROUND A FLANGE, THE FINAL LEVEL OF STRESS IN ALL BOLTS AROUND THE FLANGE CAN VARY CONSIDERABLY. EVEN UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS WHERE ALL BOLTS HAVE BEEN LUBRICATED TO THE SAME DEGREE AND THE RECOMMENDED BOLTING-UP SEQUENCE IS FOLLOWED USING CONTROLLED TORQUES, TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE FINAL STRESS LEVELS IN BOLTS AROUND THE FLANGE CAN VARY AS MUCH AS PLUS OR MINUS 20% FROM THE AVERAGE. IF THE BOLTS ARE STRESSED BY AN UNCONTROLLED METHOD, E.G., HAMMER WRENCHES, ETC., THEN THE FINAL STRESS LEVELS IN BOLTS AROUND THE FLANGE WILL VARY ENORMOUSLY. 14.1.1
ENGINEERING RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING ITEMS BE FOLLOWED IN THE MANUFACTURING FACILITY AND FIELD INSTALLATIONS. THE PROCEDURE IS WRITTEN TO ADDRESS HANDLING OF FLEXIBLE METAL HOSES AT THE D ISASSEMBLY PHASE ONLY. DISASSEMBLY ACTIVITY SHALL INCLUDE UNIT TEARDOWNS AND MODIFICATIONS IN GREENVILLE AND ALL FIELD MAINTENANCE TASKS. SCHEDULED AND UNSCHEDULED, AT ANY SITE. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MATCHMARKING OF FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE AT THE INITIAL MANUFACTURING OR FIELD INSTALLATION PHASE IS NOT REQUIRED. AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, THE NEED FOR MATCHMARKING ONLY APPLIES AT THE DISASSEMBLY PHASE, SPECIFICALLY AFTER THE UNIT GAS TURBINE HAS OPERATED.

THE MATCHMARKING SHOULD ALSO BE APPLIED TO THE FLANGES OF THE MATING EQUIPMENT, SINCE MANY FLEXIBLE METAL HOSES ARE CONSTRUCTED WITH FREELY ROTATING LAP JOINT FLANGES. THE MARKING SHALL BE NONDESTRUCTIVE IN TYPE AND WILL ALSO BE APPLIED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT IT CAN NOT BE REMOVED DURING NORMAL CLEANING AND INSPECTION ACTIVITIES.
14.1.3
DURING REMOVAL AND SUBSEQUENT STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES, FLEXIBLE METAL HOSES SHALL BE HANDLED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE HOSE SECTION IS NOT PLACED IN A STRESSED CONDITION. NEVER ALLOW A FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE TO HANG UNSUPPORTED FROM A MANIFOLD OR OTHER PIPING CONNECTION, AS PROBABLE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IN THE VICINITY OF THE BRAID SLEEVE.

FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE INSTALLATION PRACTICE
16.1
FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE HAS EVOLVED TO REQUIRE HIGH FACTORS OF SAFETY. FOR FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE THREE UNACCEPTABLE METHODS OF INSTALLATION. THESE UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS ARE HOSE INSTALLED UNDER COMPRESSION, TENSION OR TORSION. FIRST, COMPRESSING FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE DURING INSTALLATION IS PROHIBITED. COMPRESSING FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE RELAXES BRAID WHICH PROMOTES FAILURE. SECOND, WHEN FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE IS INSTALLED UNDER AXIAL TENSION THE BRAID TO WELD LIGAMENT CONNECTIONS ARE HIGH STRESSED. IF THESE CONNECTIONS ARE OVER STRESSED, FAILURE WILL RESULT. THIRD, FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE INSTALLED IN TORSION OR TWISTED. THE HOSE CORRUGATED PATH HAS A VERY LOW TORSION STRESS LIMIT. IF THIS LOW LIMIT IS EXCEEDED FAILURE WILL OCCUR.

THESE AREAS OF CONCERN GIVE THE PERCEPTION THAT A FLEXIBLE HOSE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO APPLY. HOWEVER, IF CONSERVATISM IS USED TO AVOID THE ABOVE CONDITIONS APPLYING FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE IS RELATIVELY EASY AND HIGHLY RELIABLE.

INDEPENDENT OF CONFIGURATION METHOD USED FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE SHALL BE INSTALLED IN A ONE PLANE BEND ONLY (REFER TO FIGURES 1 & 2).

IT IS RECOGNIZED THAT DURING THE FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION OF PIPING SYSTEMS TOLERANCE STACK-UPS AND WELDMENT, THERMAL BENDING OCCURS. AS A RESULT, INSTALLING FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE FULLY COMPRESSION OR TENSION FREE CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT. THEREFORE, INSPECTION METHODS FOR FLEXIBLE METAL HOSE WERE ESTABLISHED (REFER TO SHEET 24 FIGURES 5 AND 6).
