&oice o "arrator: ebruary !th )$%. A newspaper reporting Gandhi going for ci*il Disobedience mo*ement by defying a salt law. +ehru# Sardar ,a ,allabhbhai llabhbhai -a -atel# tel# Abdul Gaffer han# sitting in the Ashram of Gandhi and asturba (Gandhi/s wife' discussing about their dandi march.
Nehru:
bapu# what is this in today/s paper0 1hat ha*e you decided to do0
'a"dhi( Nehru(
(laughs' punishment for you. ok# you still feel 2 should be punished so you talk about dandi (stick' 1ould you like to use your stick to control me0 1ell# fine go ahead 2 am ready (laughs'.
'a"dhi:
no# no not for you (laughs' this stick will be use to whip the 3ritish 4olonial rule for imposing ta5 on 2ndians and burdening the poor people and e5ploiting our economy.
Sardar : 'a"dhi(
how will you do this0 we will start our march from this Sabarmati ashram to dandi beach and make a salt from the water of the sea.
)arsa"*hai( 'a"dhi(
+an ashram inmate' what will happen with that0 we want to show to the whole world with the weapon of non6 ,iolence we can fight e*ery in7ustice and e5ploitation. This is only 8ne newspaper reporter reporting our march but 2 want reporters to report of our march6America# 2ndia and 9.
Sardar :
arsanbhai you make the arrangement for all the reporters. 2t will be your duty to see all e*ents are reported.
'a"dhi(
first 2 will meet *iceroy lord 2rwin and con*ince him to agree to all our ele*en demands and if he will not then let us go ahead with our plan. (Aggressi*ely' now nobody can stop us from attaining -urna Swara7./
'aarkha"(
what are those demands0
'a"dhi(
reduction of land re*enue assessments# cutting military e5penditure# imposing a tariff on foreign clothes and abolishing the salt law. My strongest appeal will be to abolish a ta5 le*ied on salt. 2 will gi*e him the ultimatum if these demands are not fulfilled then we will proceed for the march.
Nehru(
as the independence mo*ement is essentially for the poorest in the land# the beginning will be made with this e*il. (;aughs'.
'a"dhi(
in this march 2 want to recruit the marchers from the ashram itself
and no congress party workers.
(All surprised': why0
'a"dhi(
because the residents of my ashram are well trained and 2 want strict discipline during this march. 2 want people to adhere to Satyagraha and ahimsa. 1e must not forget our failure of non6 4ooperation mo*ement from )<%6<<. we had succeeded in raising millions of heart of 2ndians but had not the *iolence broken out at 4hauri6 4haura0 So# we still cannot trust because 2ndians are not yet ready for non6*iolence resistance.
Narrator(
Gandhi62rwin talks failed. 2rwin did not take the threat of a salt protest seriously. Then= on < th march )$% Gandhi and >? male satyagrahis set out on foot for the coastal *illage of Dandi# Gu7arat# $)%km from their starting point at Gandhi ashram. @eporters from all o*er the 4ountries reached there.
Narrator(
After the prayer=Gandhi/s speech to the marchers: truth (satya' implies lo*e and firmness engenders and therefore ser*es as a synonym for force. 2 thus began to call the 2ndian mo*ement Satyagraha# that is to say# force which is born out of truth and lo*e or non *iolence# and ga*e up the phrase passi*e resistanceB. 2f the means employed are impure the change will not be in the direction of progress but *ery likely in the opposite. 8nly a change brought by pure means can lead to real progress. The 3ritish go*ernment in 2ndia has not only depri*ed the 2ndian people of their freedom but has based itself on the e5ploitation of the masses# and ruined 2ndia economically# politically# culturally and spiritually. 1e must se*er all 3ritish connection and attain -urna Swara7 or
complete independence. This -urna Swara7 will build up unity between Cindus and Muslims by fighting a wrong that ha*e touched all of us. *erybody is prepared for arrest# 7ail or any physical assault= 4ome what may. 2 want you all to follow peace in silence. Music= bha7an=.

Suddenly= after two days 3ritish officers arri*ed hea*ily armed started blows on satyagrahis.
Saroi"i "aidu:
all of you keep bapu/s words in mind no *iolence under any circumstances you will be beaten# but you will not resists: you will not
raise yours to ward off the blows.
Narrator(
soldiers began clubbing the satyagrahis with steel tipped lathis. Many arrest were made# there was no space left in a 7ail for more arrest.
+ot one of the marchers e*en raised an arm to fend off the blows. A sound of sickening whacks of the clubs on unprotected skulls being heard# people groaned and sucked in their breaths in sympathetic pain at e*ery blow. 2n two or three minutes the ground was Huilted with bodies. They went down like ten pins. The sur*i*ors silently marched until struck down. &th April )$%# arri*ing at the seashore=
Nehru(
at last we ha*e done it. 3ut our many people ha*e faced bra*ely the blows of the police officers# many dead in between the route.
'a"dhi:
2 congratulate all my people for the sacrifices and laying their li*es against in7ustice. 2t is an honorable death = people ha*e died a warriors death and warriors death is ne*er a matter of sorrow.
-eop.e shouti"g: Gandhi broke the salt lawF Gandhi broke the salt lawF 'a"dhi:
(speech' we ha*e won the holy war. 1e succeeded a life and death struggle. 1e are the winners. 2 thank all my countrymen. And today with this fistful of salt 2 am breaking the un7ust law of salt to which
we ha*e all the rights.
Narrator(
and this way Gandhi boiled the sea water and took the salt and said...
'a"dhi(
