In-Line The Velvet Velvet Drive “71” and “72” designations indicate input horsepower ranges. There are two basic configurations of transmissions transmissions in the 71 and 72 ratings. The most popular popular model is the in-line unit. “In-line” “In-line” indicates indicates that the input and output shafts of the transmission are on the same axis. Direct drive versions of the in-line models are frequently used on high horsepower, light weight boats. The reduction ratio versions use an additional planetary gear set to allow all ow the use of larger propellers for greater pulling power at lower shaft speeds.

Specifications The Series 5000 Down Angle transmission is specifically designed for twin engine applications that require nearly horizontal engine installation. Its full reversing feature eliminates the need for opposite rotating engines, while the 8o “down angle” eliminates the problems that result from extremely steep engine installation angle. An improved hydraulic system provides more engine torque to the propeller. New design features such as an hydraulic pump and control valve make service easier. The control lever and dipstick are centrally located. Additionally, an optional SAE “A” auxiliary pump drive mounting is available on the rear of the Series 5000 transmission. Like all Velvet Drive marine transmissions, the Series 5000 accepts standard damper assemblies, flywheel housing adapters and propeller shaft couplings.

The Velvet Drive Marine Series 5000V is the latest member of the Velvet Drive transmission family. The Series 5000V is designed specifically for V-drive applications. Its fully reversing feature allows for a twin-engine layout using automotive rotating engines, while the 12 degree down angle between the input and output shafts allows the desired system installation. The coupling flange, located on the opposite side to the engine and hollow output shaft, provides position and ease of propeller shaft alignment. The compact design and aluminum case provide a lighter and considerably shorter package than the 70 Series V-Drive. The improved hydraulic system, with reduced parasitic losses, offers more power to the propeller. The Series 5000V has the same engine adaption features as the 70 Series and Series 5000 Down Angle.

Name plate The name plate is mounted to the transmission.

Engine Gearbox Compartment Care should be taken that the engine gearbox compartment is properly ventilated. Initial Operation Fill the gearbox with oil (ATF) of the recommended grade. The oil level should be up to the index mark on the dipstick (see illustration) To check the oil level, just insert the dipstick, do not screw in. Retighten the hex screw with the dipstick after the oil level check. Do not forget sealing ring.

n o i s s Sailing and moving in tow i mRotation of the propeller without load while the boat is s n sailing, being towed, or anchored in a river, as well as a r T operation of the engine with the propeller stopped (for
charging battery), will have no detrimental effects on the gearbox.
Important
When the boat is sailing (engine stopped), the gear level must be in zero position. Never put the gear lever in the position corresponding to the direction of travel of the boat.
Locking of the propeller shaft by an additional brake is not required; use the gear lever position opposite your direction of travel for this purpose.
Lay-up periods If the transmission is not used for periods of more than 1 year it should be completely filled with oil of the same grade to prevent corrosion. Protect the input shaft and the output flange by means of an anticorrosive coating if required.
Possible troubles and remedies Kind of trouble
