Editor: Tanya Jenkins Dedication This workbook is dedicated to all those who have a love for Magick and for getting the most out of life,
and most of all my Demons (Divine Intelligences) who made this work possible, and gave me the desire and will to create such a needed work for all those who are serious in their studies. I would also like to dedicate this work to S. Connolly who always encourages and stands by with her love and support in all the work that comes forth.
Introduction After we learn the basics of energy manipulation, direction and learning what our True Intent is, it is usually the next step in the process to begin learning how to build correspondences. What is a correspondence? It is the fine tuning of what we’ve previously learned on our spiritual and magickal practice. They are the bread and butter of what makes our magick more unique to us, and helps to dial in more directly to the energy we are trying to create. It is the goal of this chapbook to get you familiar with the Elements, how to use them and how to incorporate what we call correspondences into your practices. It will make your experiments more power-packed to get results faster and more accurately. There are many correspondences in which you can choose. You may include just one or two, or you may get as elaborate as you can possibly get, creating a ritual to incorporate 10 or more correspondences. In the beginning of your work, you may want to try just a couple at a time to see the effects of each corresponding Element within your experiment. After you get a feel for just one or two, begin adding a few more Elements and note your results. It’s always a good practice to journal all of your experimentation so you can go back later and re-read what you’ve done and
also to compare the results to what you experienced when you did the work. Often times, results won’t manifest for days, weeks or sometimes even months later. If you’ve been journaling your experiences you will begin to see patterns. The same is true of correspondences. Over time your perceptions and experiences with each one will change as you gain a better understanding of the Element. What I’ve provided you with here is a very basic set of correspondences to begin to work from. There are many more corresponding Elements you can learn to use than what I have listed. These are the very basic Elements that you should learn and incorporate into your practice. Building your correspondences is a simple process though a lot of people don’t do it. It’s easier to look it up in a book and go from there without even knowing what the Element means. Unfortunately this is commonplace in today’s world. The old ways of learning to research each one individually has gone by the wayside. It is my intention that you will take this work and begin to do as many like myself have done over the years, and begin to use your own list of correspondences and build upon what is presented here. The book is broken down into each Element – with a capital E to distinguish between magickal Elements and physical listings with their corresponding elements listed below. I
have headed each Element section with its symbol as that is part of the learning process. You will come across many instances as you progress in your magickal studies where you will not see words for the Elements, just their symbols so knowing how to recognize them is very important. So why this work? Why not just refer to tables of correspondences that are in so many other books? The answer is simple. Many people look at those lists and tables and have no idea what they mean, or what to do with the information. It is my intent to make the information available in one work, and give an explanation to each Element, as well as give you examples of rituals that have incorporated these kinds of correspondences in them. After the section, you will also notice a separate section that has a quiz on it, as well as some exercises you can do to get better acquainted with the correspondences. I’ve broken down the sections on the Elements in the following manner: Day of the week – The day(s) of the week that is associated with the current Element Cardinal Direction – The most common quarter associated with the Element. Please note that some traditions do not place Earth and Water in the common placement of North and West respectively. Alchemically, North for Earth is not really a good placement for it because of the way the Elements rotate. Experimentation with the placement of the
Elements, you might be surprised at how it turns out. Attribute – The attributes associated with the Element, gender and feel. Tarot Suit – The Suit in a Tarot deck associated with the Element Deities – The Deities associated with the Element Colors - The color associated with the Element Metal – The metal associated with the Element Stones – The stones associated with the Element Herbs – The herbs and scents associated with the Element Planet – The planet associated with the Element Zodiac – the zodiac sign(s) associated with each Element Magick and Ritual - Rituals and Magick associated with each Element. As you can see with the above list there are many things you can use to make your magick more meaningful to you. The deities I’ve listed are very few, but they are the ones I work with most. There are many more you can associate with each Element. I encourage you to add to or replace it with your own pantheon of deities that you work with the most, or try some new ones. The choice is totally up to you. That’s the beauty of correspondences, they are very versatile. If you look at the last thing on the list, Magick and Ritual, it gives you a hint as to what kind of magick you can use the Element for. This is not a complete list of correspondences
but they are the most common uses for each one. Here are some examples of ways you might use these correspondences: 1. Create a charm bag with herbs and/or stones in it, on the day associated with the Element. 2. Write a ritual that honors the Element and perform it on the day associated using stones, herbs and candles. 3. Make incense and oleums with the herbs associated with the Element. 4. Wait until the Element and/or a planet is in a zodiac sign associated, and then perform the ritual on the day associated as well as in the appropriate planetary hour (See Magickal Planets, B. Morlan on calculating Planetary/Magickal Hours). The list can go on; there are endless possibilities to creating correspondences and making your magick more powerful. On a side note, I would also suggest that as you work through this book to practice writing the symbols for the Elements as you go, over and over. The repetition is good for recognition of the Element in other works that rely heavily on symbols instead of words. It’s also a good idea to get a copy of the book 777 for the meaning of numbers. This can be a key component in
figuring out what the numbers for each Element means and can give you more ideas for experiments to try. When you delve into this work you’ll see how important the Elements are. Everything is connected and without the Elements nothing can manifest in our lives or the world around us. We wouldn’t exist, there would be nothingness. The exercises are designed for contemplation and becoming one with each Element. Why would you want to do this? The reasoning behind this is simply because when you attune to the Element, energy flow is increased; you know that Element and can then experiment with combining them and getting into a deeper understanding of the relationship of each one to the others and to yourself. Weather magick is also something that is of interest for some. Once you have attuned to each Element, you can attempt to control the weather. A lot of people are skeptical about this practice but once you do it there is a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment in your life. You will become a better magician for it. That being said lets dive right in and get to work on learning and studying the Elements.
Earth
Day of the week – Friday and Saturday Cardinal Direction – North Attribute – Cold and Dry, Masculine Tarot Suit – Pentacles or Coins Deities – Belial, Belphegore, Agares, Valfor Colors – Greens, Browns and Black Metal – Copper and Lead Stones – Emerald, Turquoise, Malachite, Beryl, Aventurine, Sapphire, Rose Quartz, Onyx, Obsidian Herbs – Belladonna, Black Nightshade, Blackthorn, Mandrake Root, Monkshood, Solomon’s Seal, Wild Lettuce, Witch-hazel, Yew, Oak Moss, Patchouli, Vervain, Roses Planet – Venus and Saturn Zodiac – Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn Magick and Ritual – Monetary rituals (this includes finding work/repairing a current job, new businesses, enhancing old businesses etc.), building a firm and strong foundation,
enhancing the Element within you, affecting your mundane surroundings. The earth is what we stand upon; it's what gives us stability. Elemental Demons help us to ground and center. This is what this Element does. Have you ever gone outside and laid down or sat on the ground and began to feel like you are heavy as a stone and ready to fall asleep or become just plain sluggish? This is Elemental Earth. It is also associated with the 10th Sephira of the Tree of Life, Malkuth. It is where we begin our journey. What properties does Elemental Earth represent? It represents strength, mass and stability. We need these in order to have a firm foundation in our spiritual and mundane lives. Without stability and strength, our foundation will crack and we will become unbalanced. This is the essence of Elemental Earth. Of course, I am only giving you a very generic examination of the Elements; it will be up to you to add to these explanations. Colors are a good way to represent the Elements in magick as well. For this Element you want to use browns, blacks and deep greens. Soil, rocks, gemstones and salt are all good physical representations of this Element. Each Element has its own temperature and feel to it.
Elemental Earth has the attributes of being dry and cool. This dryness and this coolness is what will allow us to get to know this Element in greater detail. Exercises 1. Listed above are four deities. Use those particular 4 deities to cast an Elemental Earth circle. Note your feelings, thoughts and experiences in your magickal journal. If you need a starter sheet you can copy to make a journal, I have provided one to you in the back of the book. 2. Research new deities associated with this Element and work with them in a circle as in the previous exercise. 3. Meditate inside this circle on one or all of the deities, the Element itself or just your surroundings. Note your results. 4. Lie down on the ground outside, or be in a basement that is below ground level and lay on the floor. Feel the energy emanating from the ground and focus on the energy and feeling then note your results. 5. Create an Elemental Tablet to use in your circles for meditation, charging objects and getting to know the Element better. Questions
1. What is your initial reaction to this Element? 2. How does the Elemental circle, using only this Element differ from other constructs you’ve done? How would you change it? 3. Did you make a tablet to use? How did that affect your magick? 4. Was this Element difficult to connect with? Why or why not? 5. What are your results with this Element, compared to other Elements, with regards to attuning to it? 6. Have you tried to change the weather after attuning to the Element? If so, what are your thoughts? 7. Other than the magickal uses listed, what other rituals or magick could you do with this Element? 8. How has your magick changed since incorporating correspondences in your work?
Air
Day of the week – Wednesday Cardinal Direction – East Attribute – Hot and Wet, Feminine Tarot Suit – Wands** Deities – Lucifer, Thoth, Ronwe, Mercury Colors - Yellow Metal – Mercury and Alloys Stones – Opal, Agate, Tigers Eye, Citrine Herbs – Sandalwood, Cinquefoil (Five fingers grass), Damiana, Fennel, Lavender, Licorice Root, Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena Planet – Mercury Zodiac – Gemini, Libra and Aquarius Magick and Ritual – Rituals of the Mind meaning wisdom and knowledge, clarity of thought, creativity and intellectual magick.
** In some Tarot decks and schools of thought, Swords belong to the Element of Air instead of Fire. It would be appropriate to place the suit of Swords and Wands in a different set of correspondences depending on your own personal belief and World View. The author has placed them in the order that he uses but feel free to flip them backwards if you associate Wands with Fire instead of Air, and Swords with Air instead of Fire. Elemental Air can be a tricky Element for some people. It has caused some to become very light headed, confused and even physically ill, like getting car sick. However, it is a very important Element to get to know in our magical practices. The attributes of Elemental Air are warm and moist. Its properties include Creativity, Mental Stability/Instability, Wisdom, Knowledge, Clarity, Focus and intuition (psychic development). It can also be used to cause confusion. Colors associated with the Element of Air are white and light yellows. A great physical representation of Elemental Air is incense. Exercises 1. Listed above are four deities. Use those particular 4 deities to cast an Elemental Air circle. Note your feelings, thoughts,
and experiences in your magickal journal. If you need a starter sheet you can copy to make a journal, I have provided one to you in the back of the book. 2. Research new deities associated with this Element and work with them in a circle as the previous exercise. 3. Meditate inside this circle on one or all of the deities, the Element itself, or just your surroundings. Note your results. 4. Be as open as you can, disrobe if you feel comfortable doing so and place a fan so that it is blowing on you. Feel the energy emanating from it, try and focus on the air flowing around you, and the energy of it. Note your results. Questions 1.
Fire
Day of the week – Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday Cardinal Direction – South Attribute: Hot and Dry, Masculine Tarot Suit – Swords** Deities – Flereous, Amducius, Phenex, Seere Colors – Red and Orange Metal – Gold, Iron, Steel and Tin Stones – Amethyst, Garnets, Rubies, Sunstone, Turquoise, Sapphires Herbs – Sunflower, Cinnamon, Cayenne, Kyphi, Wormwood, Black Peppercorns Planet – Sun, Mars and Jupiter Zodiac – Leo, Aries and Sagittarius Magick and Ritual – Rituals of action, passion, movement, fast changes, strength ** In some Tarot decks and schools of thought, Swords
belong to the Element of Air instead of Fire. It would be appropriate to place the suit of Swords and Wands in a different set of correspondences depending on your own personal belief and World View. The author has placed them in the order that he uses but feel free to flip them backwards if you associate Wands with Fire instead of Air, and Swords with Air instead of Fire. Fire is a very energetic Element. It produces results in a fast paced environment, and causes huge changes within its reach. Other than the obvious destructive nature of this Element, it also swings the complete opposite – after all, all the Elements have positive and negative qualities to them. Elemental Fire is associated with Cleansing, Purifying, Sexuality, Lust, Intense Love, Action, Intense Energy and Motivation just to name a few of the many characteristics of this Element. The qualities of Elemental Fire are dry and warm. Colors associated with this Element are reds, oranges, deep yellows and gold. Candles, balefires, cutting devices – swords, daggers as well as lancets are great representations of this Element. I mention lancets because of blood. Blood is very prevalent in the Element of Fire, even though it contains all Elements.
Exercises 1. Listed above are four deities. Use those particular 4 deities to cast an Elemental Fire circle. Note your feelings, thoughts, and experiences in your magickal journal. 4. If you have a cauldron, light a small fire inside of it, and sit as close as you can to it. If you are able to make a fire outside, that’s even better. Feel the energy coming off of it and experiment with touching it, allow the energy to consume you. Note your results. 5. Create an Elemental Tablet to use in your circles for meditation, charging objects and getting to know the Element better. Questions 1. What is your initial reaction to this Element? 2. How does the Elemental circle, using only this Element
differ from other constructs you’ve done? How would you change it? 3. Did you make a tablet to use? How did that affect your magick? 4. Was this Element difficult to connect with? Why or why not? 5. What are your results with this Element, compared to other Elements, with regards to attuning to it? 6. Have you tried to change the weather after attuning to the Element? If so, what are your thoughts? 7. Other than the magickal uses listed, what other rituals or magick could you do with this Element? 8. How has your magick changed since incorporating correspondences in your work?
Water
Day of the week – Monday Cardinal Direction – West Attribute – Cold and Wet, Feminine Tarot Suit – Cups Deities – Leviathan, Verrine, Dagon, Amon Colors – Blue and White Metal – Silver Stones – Moonstone, Gypsum, Pearl, Clear Quartz as well as Smokey Quartz Herbs – Chamomile, Cloves, Mugwort, Orris Root, Poppy Seeds, Cardamom, Star Anise, White Willow Bark, Moonflower Planet – Moon Zodiac – Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer Magick and Ritual – Psychic development, love magick, any kind of magick dealing with emotions, healing, protection.
Elemental Water is a wonderful Element to get to know and incorporate into your practices. Water is soothing and calming, healing and comforting. What does water remind you of when you think of it or swim in the ocean or in a pool? It always makes me feel safe. These are all things that deal with intense emotion. The attributes of Elemental Water are all of those things above: Healing, Calming, Soothing, Comforting as well as Emotions – both positive and negative, as well as Compassion and Protection. Flow is another great attribute of Elemental Water. Divination and Intuition also fall into this category. It makes sense that Intuition goes with the water Element, because it is the feminine aspect of air, which also goes with divination and intuition. The attributes of Elemental Water are cool and moist. Colors associated with Elemental Water are blues, light grays and sea greens or light greens. Chalices, cups and seaweeds are great representations of this Element. Exercises 1. Listed above are four deities. Use those particular 4 deities to cast an Elemental Water circle. Note your feelings, thoughts and experiences in your magickal journal. If you need a starter sheet you can copy to make a journal, I have
provided one to you in the back of the book. 2. Research new deities associated with this Element and work with them in a circle as the previous exercise. 3. Meditate inside this circle on one or all of the deities, the Element itself, or just your surroundings. Note your results. 4. Fill a bathtub full of cool water. Make sure it’s not cold or you will shock your system. It can be a little warm, but should be cool to the touch. Get into the tub and lay down as much as you possibly can. Don’t worry if your body isn’t covered completely just try and get as much under the water as you possibly can. Feel how the water feels on your body, the energy of it. Focus on how your body feels within the water. Let the water consume you. Note your results. 5. Create an Elemental Tablet to use in your circles for meditation, charging objects and getting to know the Element better. Questions 1. What is your initial reaction to this Element? 2. How does the Elemental circle, using only this Element differ from other constructs you’ve done? How would you change it? 3. Did you make a tablet to use? How did that affect your
magick?
Spirit
Day of the week – All Cardinal Direction – Above and Below Attribute – All Tarot Suit – All Deities – Hecate, Ba’al, Satan, Atem Colors – Purple, Black, White, Red Metal -- All Stones -- All Herbs -- All Planet -- All Zodiac -- All Magick and Ritual – Rituals involving worship and honor, balancing, adding potency to rituals, pathworking, inner-self working, Hermetics, Enochian Magick, advanced forms of Magick. Basically anything you can think of the Fifth Element, or Quintessence, can be worked with.
The reason I put All on almost everything in the correspondence list, is because of the nature of the Fifth Element. Its nature is that everything is within this one Element, it binds all other Elements together to create Spirit, that all inclusive energy that allows for our being to be in existence. Without Spirit we cannot function within the world or the Universe. The Universe is Mental. You will hear that a lot in your magickal and spiritual education and journey along your path. We don’t have that knowledge of the Universe without the Fifth Element, likewise, without each individual Element the Fifth Element does not exist. They must work together to create life and death and continue the cycle and rotation of everything known and unknown. Exercises 1. Listed above are four deities. Cast a balanced circle using one of each Elemental deity at each cardinal direction. Then from the center of the circle invoke one of the Fifth Element deities. Note your feelings, thoughts and experiences in your magickal journal. If you need a starter sheet you can copy to make a journal, I have provided one to you in the back of the book. 2. Research new deities associated with this Element and work with them in a circle as the previous exercise.
3. Meditate inside this circle on one or all of the deities, the Element itself, or just your surroundings. Note your results. 4. Create a sigil of one of your Fifth Element deities and meditate upon it within a balanced circle. Try it also in an unbalanced circle and note the differences. 5. Create an Elemental Tablet to use in your circles for meditation, charging objects and getting to know the Element better. Questions 1. What is your initial reaction to this Element? 2. How does the Elemental circle differ from other constructs you’ve done? How would you change it? 3. Did you make a tablet to use? How did that affect your magick? 4. Was this Element difficult to connect with? Why or why not? 5. What are your results with this Element, compared to other Elements, with regards to attuning to it? 6. Have you tried to change the weather after attuning to the Element? If so, what are your thoughts? 7. Other than the magickal uses listed, what other rituals or magick could you do with this Element? 8. How has your magick changed since incorporating
correspondences in your work?
