Abstract
In this thesis two different approaches to describe the cancer growth are presented: a mesoscopic one and a macroscopic one. In the first approach a consistent set of rules at cellular level are considered. This rules lead to a system of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations which are numerically solved using computational techniques. In this approach the competition among different cellular subpopulations are studied. As a first step a homogeneous tumor of slow growth is considered. This tumor is transformed in a heterogeneous tumor by the emergence of a new subpopulation. Our simulations show that the success of a mutation depends not only on its intrinsic competitive advantages, but also on its location in the tumor mass. In the next step the effects of the chemotherapy on a homogeneous tumor are analyzed. The results show tumors which are characterized by a geometric growth with “rings” of high density. Finally, we analyze the emergence of a resistant population. Two different resistances are considered: intrinsic and acquired. In both cases nonconfined heterogeneous tumors can be obtained. On the other hand, a mathematical model of ordinary differential equations is formulated using global properties and macroscopic characteristics of the tumor growth. This formulation is used to study the behaviour of a multicellular tumor spheroid with necroses. The results show that the emergence of necroses facilitates the growth of avascular tumors. Finally, some ideas to model inmunotherapy and angiogenesis are presented.
