EDUCATIONAL EDUCA TIONAL LIGHTING ‘ Studies in primary educati on have proven a connection between light quality in a classroom and the academic performance of children ’
much has een witten aout the iotance of light in educational envionents. Studies in iay education ( Wot. W ot. 1986, h & Tompo.1989 & htwy.1994 ) htwy.1994 ) have found a connection etween the quality of light in a classoo, the well-eing and acadeic efoance of the childen. Anothe significant study ( hco h co Mo.1999 ) ) showed a stong link etween daylight and acadeic achieveent. A good guidance docuent – bb90 Lighting Design fo Schools – was ulished y the DFEE in 1999. Howeve since its ulication oe ecent eseach ( B. B . 2001 & at. 2003 ) ) has undelined the vital ole of light in iology and ental efoance. High colou teeatue light that is ich in shot wavelength (lue) sectu has een found to oost oth well-eing and cognitive e foance fo woking duing the daytie. The iological echaniss involved ae now undestood and oven. The conclusion fo all this study is that significant enefits can flow fo inceasing levels of natual and atificial daylight esent in schools and univesities.
0 4
We now know that cognitive and visual efoance inceases with light level and colou teeatue, so long they ae also low in glae. This knowledge should have ilications fo secifying lighting conditions in exa halls. Juslen ( ‘Pp ‘ Pp t’ 2004 ) ) has suggested secifying highe light levels acoss ost teaching sace than cuent guidance, howeve we ust also e indful of enegy consevation. Intelligent lighting design has little difficulty in econciling these two equieents, ut the selection of lowest cost fittings will often e the ain ostacle. Cleavision ovides design and consultancy sevices to assist in c eating egonoic and envionental uildings that will suot the est enegy and acadeic efoance. This anual is intended as a guide into the tyes of saces and fittings that could e alied to achieve these esults. We hoe that this infoation will assist in the ceation of ealistic udgets caale of deliveing the ette lighting that the est education needs.

COnsideraTiOns : The contiution a well lit classoo akes to educational achieveent should not e undeestiated. Half of all sujects in seconday schools and vitually all sujects at iay schools ae taught in these saces. As classoos should e designed to take axiu advantage of availale natual light, the electic lighting installation should oth haonise with any daylight, whilst also coensating fo its vaying availaility. Fo this uose Cleavision ecoend the use of cool (6500k) ‘daylight’ fluoescent las, which studies have indicated, also ioves oth aletness and visual acuity.
Ceiling, and aticulaly wall oo sufaces, should e well and evenly lit, without oducing distaction factos, such as excessive contast o glae. In this way a sacious, stiulating inteio can e ceated with ehasis laced on whiteoads, wall dislays and desk sufaces. Fo these easons the use of luinaies with an aut light cut off at highe angles, aticulaly louved oducts, tyically secified fo use in offices whee dislay sceens ae evalent, should e avoided. This aoach will usually esult in a cave-like effect of dak ceilings and ue walls, which is oessive and unleasant to occuy.

COnTrOls : As previously mentioned, a well designed classroom should utilise any available natural light to its ullest. Thereore, to achieve maximum energy savings, any lighting controls should eature daylight regulation. A single photocell, usually integrated within the presence detector, detector, is sucient to reerence light level within the space, allowing the output o dimmable luminaires to be at the minimum required. The luminaires are usually controlled in rows parallel with the window, with it sometimes being sucient to limit control to just the rst window row.
Further energy savings are achieved by absence detection. Lights are manually switched on upon entering a classroom, but should they ail to be switched o upon exit this will automatically occur ater no movement has been detected or several minutes. Gradual dim down beore eventual switch o, to provide warning to any particularly still occupants is also possible.
Additionally, dimming luminaires via wall plate or handheld controller will provide optimal illuminance where varying light levels may be required or demonstrations, desk work or use o the interactive whiteboard. This is particularly o use in primary schools where a variety o activities are carried out in one space. These control interaces should be simple and i ntuitive, minimising teacher and pupil distraction.
When multiplied across a whole site the reduction in lighting energy achievable within classrooms can have signicant eect on a school’s school’s annual electricity spend.
Sensors can be integrated into the lighting, be recessed into ceilings, or be surace mounted i required.

COnTrOls : As with general teaching space, daylight linked dimming and absence detection eatures should be integrated into the control o the lighting in practical teaching space. Additionally, there is scope or urther energy savings via manual dimming and/or selection o preset light levels, o sa y 300 lux. This also adds fexibility where; only basic teaching
tasks are being perormed (requiring lower light levels) demonstrations are occurring, or projection/display equipment is being used. It may be desirable to provide the luminaires above the ront, lecturer bench, with a higher lighting level in order to add clarity and ocus to demonstrations.

COnsideraTiOns : Although the equieent fo lighting within ciculation sace is edoinately functional, as these saces can ake u as uch as 20% of the net aea within a school, a standadised aoach to luinaie and la selection can silify aintenance and ovide continuity.
Staiwells ae otentially one of the ost hazadous aeas in any uilding. These should e lit to ovide axiu contast etween teads and ises in an effot to educe accidents y childen who ay not negotiate the with the sae cae and attention as an adult.
Coidos and aticulaly ecetion aeas ay equie good wall illuinance fo notice oads, dislays and lock es. The ost actical way to achieve this in coidos is via a cental ow of suface ounted linea luinaies oviding a wide distiution of light. Altenatively, two ows of ecessed downlights, laced close to the walls can e accoodated y the wide diensions of school thooughfaes.
As enty and exit oint into the uilding, ecetion aeas and loies hel to fo a visito’s fist iessions and as such should e lit to e inviting and visually inteesting. Highe illuinance should e ovided to these saces, aticulaly whee liited natual daylight is availale, to aid the eye’s adatation etween intenal and extenal lighting conditions. Additional lighting ay e equied fo dislays within these aeas. In the event of an owe failue ciculation aeas ovide the ain oute of escae fo the classoos and as such adequate eegency lighting designed to bS EN 1838 & bS 5266 t1 ust e ovided.
As ciculation sace is also social sace fo uils, often unsuevised, oe oust luinaies offeing soe otection to las should e secified to esist any ause. Due to ounting height this is aticulaly alicale to wall luinaies within staiwells, although the use of uncoveed downlights is also undesiale.

COnTrOls : Substantial energy savings may be achieved by implementation o presence detection in all circulation space. Due to requent and predictable shits in occupancy, i.e. between class times, dimming, rather than switching control o the luminaires is recommended or school buildings. Whilst excessive daily switching cycles will reduce the lie o both control gear and lamps, this issue is eliminated by dimming.
Luminaires within unoccupied corridors will gradually dim to 20% output ater a predetermined time period, returning to ull output once movement is detected. Standard dimming luminaires are now available with this control unctiona lity built in, minimising initial hardware cost. Once again regulation o luminaire output with available da ylight should be implemented where viable.

COnTrOls : The case or controls in IT suites is limited. Usually Blinds will be employed to reduce glare rom windows and only a single, relatively low, light level is required. However, once again energy savings may be achieved by use o absence detection. Lights are switched on upon entering the room, but should they ail to be switched o upon exit this will automatically occur ater no movement has been detected or several
minutes. Gradual dim down beore eventual switch o, to provide warning to any particularly still occupant is also poss ible. Movement sensors can be integrated into the lighting, be recessed into ceilings, or be surace mounted i required .
