IO PAN An Analysis of the ritual of the Star Ruby

Introduction & Notes This document has been written by necessity, as I have been struggling to find a coherent and reasonable commentary and analysis of the ritual of the Star Ruby. This being so, I have undertaken an effort to provide such a document to the masses, since it's the central ritual for all Thelemites. This is one of the starry rituals, written by rater !erdurabo. They are all used to cross the Abyss in one way or another, and they all correspond to one of the paths which have a star in their sigil within "iber #$%. rom what I have gathered until now, the Star Ruby works with the path of &e or T(addi), while the Star Sapphire works the path of *ain. +f course, this is mostly based on conecture, however it doesn't seem to be far from the truth. -ith that said, I hope this sheds some light on the ritual, and that is helps aspirants understand what is eactly happening when they perform it. /ertainly, I have ommited some parts of the analysis, deeming them either unreliable or not universal, however the foundation of the ritual is shown fairly clearly to anyone who is able to think for himself. In time, it is my hope that I will be able to be able to epand on the last part of the ritual, being the calling forth of the guardians, and make what is already said clearer and more coherent. This is a powerful beginning for a ritual. irst, we position ourselves towards the 0ast, and give the sign of &oor1paar12raat, also known as the sign of Silence. In the Silent +rder, it is the sign of the !robationer, along with the sign of the &orus the 0nterer. The sign of Silence is generally accepted to be a gesture which, when assumed, eases the mind and ceases thought. It is also a nice connection to the myth of &orus, who was hidden by Isis in the flower of a lotus. Thus, we also see that this is a sign of purity and protection. There is much more to be said about it, however the foundation has been laid, and that is enough. The sweep is fairly simple 3 ust sharply trace a half1circle with your hand, in a cutting, slashing, motion. 4uch like you would go about cutting something with a sword. The 5reek is, simply put, incomplete. The intention is to banish, however you can not easily substitute this phrase with (E)*+ E+TE EE-/ or 0123- E+TE 01F*4/ 5, for ΑΠ ΠΑ!"# $Α$%Α&'!# only means as much as 6from all evil demons7. 8espite the large amount of information to the contrary #, there are no facts to support them, and therefore they are irrelevant to the issue at hand. 9ow, if we combine the two elements, we suddenly find out that we are distancing ourselves, setting up a barrier of sort between us and all outside influences. It is no coincidence that one might find this ritual Buite scary, given that we are proecting these ideas into our Ana chakkra, the so1 called 6control center7. C DEFFG ? %$HH. This is a bit more of a comple issue, which can be broken down on many levels. irst of all, %$HH ? JG>< K DEFF=<. A common interpretation of this is DEFF=< ? @$% ? LMNEO><. The pyramid, as we know, is a symbol of the -ill. JG>< means 6vagina7, therefore we have the Pesica !iscis, which is related to "ove. This completes the formula of Q$. &owever, if we look at the issue from a more gematric point of view, the point % # $
oth phrases mean essentially 6"eave here, o profanes7, in 0nochian and "atin respectively. 4ost of which claim that it comes from +rthodo "iturgy 3 it doesn't. And even then, it takes Buite a bit of effort to coerce the spirits to serve if they are unwilling.
gets more and more interesting. irst, let's look at JG>< K DEFF=<. It's simple to see that those relate to the -ater and ire elements. Thus, we have the downwards and upwards pointing triangles. If we overlay these, we get a heagram, which is a symbol of Tiphareth. Since we're touching the member, we're working with the 4uladhara chakra, which corresponds to esod, the oundation. So we can fairly safely assume that we are actually setting up Tiphareth as the foundation, the base from which the whole ritual is worked. This point is supported by the identity of DEFF=< ? @$% ? OEN==< ? $ ? MN>G, both of which imply the heagram. An interesting, perhaps irrelevant, identity of %$HH is MU=GDEF=WCN, which ties in nicely with blood, and by etension, with 5eburah. 8ivided by #, we get XQ ? = FM=<. -olves are closely related to 5eburah. urthermore, divided by the number of 5eburah, we get $%H ? L=NUG>E, which is 6fornication7. Perily a 4artial act. GMWEN>EC ? @%%, the god of the 5nostics. 0Buals OEC, both of which connect to the chest area, and therefore the Anahata chakram. There is much written on this already, in great detail. Suffice to say, this is an inherently Solar, macrocosmic formula. Another issue which might be related is the fact that when we proect the human figure on the Tree of "ife, with the 4uladhara being on Tiphareth, and the Ana on 2ether, 8a'ath overlaps with the Anahatta chakra. This suggests that 8a'ath is inherently solar 3 the second nature of the Sun, so to speak. Another possibility is that r. !erdurabo simply proects Solar energies onto both places where Tiphareth resides in this ritual 3 it's hard for me to determine which one is it. *d?ance to the East. /magine strongly a 0entagram, aright, in thy forehead. @rawing the hands to the eyes, fling it forth, making the sign of (orus, and roar AB>&!. 1etire thine hand in the sign of (oorC paarC)raat. Take a step forward. 0nvision a ruby red pentagram. Red is the colour of 5eburah, which by etension connects to the path of Shin. 9ow Shin is the tongue of flame which puts Spirit into the letters. Thus, we find that although the Buarters themselves are attributed to the individual parts of &P&, they are connected to each other by the power of Shin. The sign of the 0nterer is used, in this contet, to proect the relevant forces to the appropriate Buarter. It also creates a magical link with them. 9ow, there is something which could or could not be a blind in this ritual. That is, the 6roaring7 of \]N>=U and the 6bellowing7 or &A8IT. The signs of 9+^ involved, and their attributions by *odiac signs are:

I have counterchanged the way of vocali(ing betweeh roaring and bellowing because I consider it to be an intentional blind left for the weak. Admittedly, I have only noticed it lately, so I have not eperimented with this much, however it does seem to be slightly changing the way the ritual acts. This is based solely on the fact that a "ion can't bellow, as a ull can't really roar. 4oving on, to understand what is happening in this ritual, we have to stress that we are standing within the sphere of Tiphareth, and we are setting up the paths around 8a'ath. -hat is implied, however, is that we are operating from in between them. This means that there is much more to be said about the dynamics of the ritual. To put things simply, the use of the sign of the 0nterer is to create a link with the related paths, much as if using a rope with a hook on it's end, and to pull Tiphareth up to where 8a'ath is presumed to be in the 9aples arrangement. Thus, we end up with a version of the Tree before the all. Thus, we find ourselves in the midst of the paths of Pav, 8aleth, /heth and Teth, standing in Tiphareth. ut let's go about this part by part. irst, we move up 0ast, and we bellow \]N>=U. \]N>=U ? #VX ? EZEOE<. Sets up the path of Pav, on the pillar of 4ercy. Saying 69;IT7 implies Air, and the sign of ABuarius. y Trigrammaton _abalah, 9;IT ? @ ? /hange ? Stars. Sets up a link to /hokmah Sphere of the *odiac), by the path of &e, but only as a secondary function. 5iven the attributions to the 9+^ signs, we are actually grasping on the path of 8aleth, on the far side of the Abyss. This is one of the cases where the ritual elements can be interpreted on multiple levels. or now, let's assume that we are working with the path of 8aleth. -hispering 6AA"+97 implies -ater, and the sign of Scorpio with the sign of 4ulier. AA"+9 ? %H, which implies inah. It's easy to ustify putting abalon at /heth when we consider the role of the &igh !riestess in the Star Sapphire ritual. Roaring 6&A8IT7 towards the South, we set up the path of Teth. -hat is interesting is that &A8IT is actually the unetended particle of "ight, which, when moved in the proper way, becomes !A9. 2eys ^I and ^P will elucidate on this issue. *lternati?ely -iber ?ersionG, roar <Α#, scream **-4, say ;>#, bellow H=
9ow we have a Buite different order here. ou will notice that the elemental order has been reversed, so instead of going &eh1Pav1&eh1od, we're going from start to finish: od1&eh1Pav1&eh. In this version, the elemental attributions are correct, so no change is necessary. -e begin with WE=< ? @X% ? `. Roaring means ire attribution through the sign of "eo), and we do, in fact see that @X% ? %$ HX. %$ in this contet is ` , whereas HX is the &ebrew spelling og inah, I9&. Then we turn 9orth, and scream AA"+9 ? %H ? Fj` K Fj`. This, along with the previously mentioned attribution to /het, gives us Buite a bit to think
about in the contet of the Tarot, and "ady ustice. The rothers of *∴* ∴ are 6 omen: the *spirants to * ∴* ∴ are Ien. 11ook of "ies, /ap.III. If we take a look upon the 2eys PII and PIII, we will see that the structure is very similar, although the elemental properties have been reversed. Instead of the /halice held by the /harioteer, we have a Sword held by a woman. -here the four poles supporting the 6roof7 of the /hariot are orange, we see that there are four rather sharp, dark green shapes connecting opposing spheres of blue and green. 9otice also the fact that you are 6screaming7. This is because of the counterchange of the kerubic beasts as far as the (odiac is concerned, putting the 0agle along with Scorpio. The 0agle is naturally an airborne animal, which enforces the change in elements. 9et, we have GN=< ? %% ? ##% ? H %X. In simple terms, this connects with the path of 8aleth, in a Buite non1intuitive way. If we look at 2ey III, we won't notice anything special. &owever, if we take into account 2ey PI, we can clearly see how the ritual is set up. -e have the ladies abalon and !syche) standing on the pillars, with 0ros taking the place of the path of 8aleth. At the bottom of the card we can clearly see the egg around which the serpent is coiled, which indicates /haos, being the place of infinite possibilities. &ere's some gematria on it. 9ot much to say here. ? EZ &ad in 5reek) %X ? &:*&& To shine) ? I* to be about to bound or spring) H ? G>O> I am) ##% ? <>] Silence) inally, we get to MW]. This we are to bellow, which indicates the sign of Taurus. And well enough, she is portrayed on 2ey P. -hat is interesting about ithis particular set1up, is that she is the one holding the source of light that shines on the &ierophant himself. She is the one who 6allows7 him to have his show. !ersonally, I am inclined to believe that this refers to the lowest form of our "ady, the one who sheds light and directs our attention upon the 2habs, being the Inner /hild and the &oly 5uardian Angel, manifesting through the Adept here shown as the &ierophant). &aving said this, I've yet to work out the order of the 9+^ signs for this version, however I am slowly working on them. 2ompleting the circle widdershins, retire to the centre and raise thy ?oice in the 0Jan, with these words &8 ΠΑ! with the signs of 4..K.
So we come to complete the circle, and come back to where we began, to the center. The !an is fairly straightforward. !an is, simply put, the 5reek god of fertility. There is much to be said about him, and the 9ight of !an, as well as the mythos which surrounds him 3 research into the matter will reveal another side to the simple analysis offered here. >C LEU ? @% K %$% ? This formula is of prime importance when considering the dove descending from the supernals into 4alkuth, which is in fact the /up of inah. It is well illustrated on the "amen of the +rdo Templi +rientis. /redit goes to q`q.
9ow, in a less strict contet, we can approach I+ as a simple formula. If we break it down to od and Ayin, we suddenly find that the TAR+ is very clear about it. rom od, we get the &and, and from the image of Ayin we get the !hallus. Thus, we get a rather crude formula of male masturbation. -e can break LEU into !e, Aleph and 9un, which is the Tower, the ool, and 8eath. This is the reverse of an inverted backwards to forwards) IA+ formula. To put this into some contet, let us consider the formula of IA+ as Isis1Apophis1+siris. irst, there is the oy of life, which is soon overcome by chaos, succeeded by complete overthrowing of the status Buo. If we take this backwards, we get the formula of +AI, which can be thought of as a reversal of the process taking place within IA+. So we're starting with the end product, who is +siris risen, and we witness him losing his divinity, as he becomes Typhon. +nce this chaos relaes, however, he is no longer +siris, as he has come back to the root of his being, Isis. 9ow, if we take LEU, we are first eperiencing utter destruction and destabili(ation, followed by our own birth, and the rising of the serpent. At this stage, it is only symbolic 3 the real work of this part is done with "iber Reguli. It is interesting to note however, that death is strongly connected with the number V%, and +siris is found crossing the Abyss, and becoming Isis. So we're not working with ust the idea of death, but that of a reversal of time and evolutionary processes in this case, associated with the all from 5race). This plays nicely with the previously mentioned 6lifting7 of Tiphareth back to it's original place. The signs of 9+^ are fairly simple. Their +rder is as in the Star Sapphire: !uer, Pir, !uella, 4ulier. There is no great mystery to them. They set up the framework for the /rossing of the Abyss within the A.'.A.'. system. At least that's what they're commonly believed to do. There is much to be said about their order: If we're to follow the order given in the Star Sapphire, we're first doing a full circle widdershins Therion19uit1abalon1&adit), then we're going &adit1Therion1 9uit1abalon with the 9+^ signs. It is painfully obvious that there is a step back that needs to be made between the 9ames and the 9+^ signs 3 namely, one needs to turn back one Buarter, which, as I see it, breaks the flow of the ritual Buite a bit. /ertainly, the formula of the Star Sapphire 9+^ sign order is one of manifestation and of coming1of1age, with it's oy14an15irl1-oman pattern. 9ow, if we change the order of the 9+^ signs, to conform with the rotation which we started in calling the 9ames, we get: Pir1!uella14ulier1!uer. Thus, the man comes together with the girl, the woman with the boy, and their roles get interchanged. Thus, one reaches a state of self1perpetuating reuvenation. I do believe that this is the intended order of the signs to be given in the Star Ruby 3 it creates a proper counter1clockwise whirling motion which assists the awakening of the Serpent, and plays nicely with "iber Reguli, which is the ritual of invocation completing the Star Ruby. The form of a Tau is certainly solar, being the Sign of +siris Slain, the /ross which emits the "ight in 0tension. Thus, we become the source of !A9. >MG< ? H#% ? 6<`x7, 6Nzqj`x7. This suggests a very much physical aspect of the force called forth, almost into the lesh, but also one which deals with love and caring, because H#% is also 6= Dx`7 as well as 6O`{|q7, which are love and breasts respectively. JGFGJENWE>}G< eBual %$# and %VH respectively 3 nothing significant comes from these numerations. +ne might find some clarity in their sum, which is #@Q@ ? # $ $ X #$ ? %# %H% ? V@$. ZE>O=U=< ? VV ? ~`|~`, which is self1control, or self1mastery. ZE>O=UG< ? $@ ? `•qq`qj`x 3 to apologi(e defend) for oneself. < ? %$ ? $X. $X ? €q, which is a missile or an hour.
A closing of the ritual. airly simple. The part 6end as thou didst begin7 implies that the opening sign of Silence and eorcism are to be performed again.
