General Guide to Fault Tracing
You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information, group 20, "General Safety Practices, Engine" before performing any procedure. If you are not properly trained and certified in a procedure, ask your supervisor for training before you perform it.
To use this checklist: 1
• • •
2
Use the recommendations in appropriate symptom information, plus the information gathered above to provide a foundation for continued fault tracing using this checklist.
Complete basic data gathering Read fault codes Check vehicle parameters
One fault often affects other systems. Therefore, it is important to confirm or eliminate suspected causes of faults at an early stage, using tests in VCADS Pro.

Oil Level, Checking 1 Check that the oil level is within specifications. Note: Oil level near or below the min – line on the dipstick can adversely affect the oil pressure during demanding driving conditions or when driving in very hilly terrain. Note: If the oil level is below the warning level, fault code MID 128 PID 98 should be active. If not, check the function of the oil level sensor. Note: If it is suspected that the wrong dipstick has been fitted to the engine, drain oil and refill with the correct amount and check again.
2 If no fault is found, proceed to next step.
Oil Quality, Checking 1 Check that the oil quality meets Volvo specifications and has been changed at the proper intervals.
2 Check the dipstick or draw a sample of oil and check for the presence of fuel or coolant in the oil.
3 Check if the oil is contaminated with coolant, fuel, or soot.
CAUTION Contaminated engine oil can cause serious damage to the engine or its components. Possible causes of contamination:
• • • • •
Inner leakage in the oil cooler. (Check for oil contamination in the coolant.) Leakage in the cylinder head gasket. Leakage in the O-rings between the cylinder liner and cylinder block. Cracks in the cylinder head, cylinder liner or cylinder block. Unit Injectors fuel leakage

4 If the oil is contaminated, refer to service information, “Contaminated Fluid.2”
Oil Pressure Gauge, Checking Using VCADS Pro 1 Connect the PC (VCADS Pro) to the vehicle diagnostics connector. Perform “Sensor values, check engine running”; follow instructions in VCADS Pro. Check the value for engine oil pressure. 2 Compare the value with the displayed value in the oil pressure gauge in the instrument cluster. If the values do not correspond, perform “Instrument, test” and check the gauge for oil pressure.
Using External Pressure Gauge Special tools: 9992873, 9998496, J39200, 9996398 1 Remove oil pressure sensor, located on the left side of the engine block near number 4 cylinder. Note: The sensor must remain disconnected from the engine harness during test to prevent engine shutdown.

5 Start the engine. Check the oil pressure (refer to operating instructions for transducer). Compare oil pressure with PC tool and instrument cluster. Refer to Lubrication and Oil System: Oil Pressure 3 If the measurement shows that the oil pressure is below specifications, continue fault tracing with “Oil Filter, Checking” page 7. If oil pressure measurement using an external pressure gauge shows that the pressure is within specifications, but the pressure sensor in the engine does not, replace the pressure sensor.
Oil Filter, Checking Special tools: J29925 1 Check that the oil filters are not damaged or restricted. External damage to the filters can restrict oil flow and reduce oil pressure. 2 Remove the oil filters and check that they are not clogged. Carefully cut open the filter top using tool J29925. Remove the paper media. Unfold and inspect for contamination, metal, or other debris. J29925
Reduction Valve, Check 1 Check that the reducing valve has a blue mark.

2 Check that the valve is closed and not damaged so that the function has deteriorated. Press in the valve cone (1) using a blunt object. Check that it does not bind and that it returns against the seat (2). Note: The reduction valve regulates oil pressure by allowing surplus oil to flow back to the oil pan.

Safety Valve, Check
T2020891
1 Check that the safety valve has a purple mark. 2 Check that the valve is closed and not damaged so that the function has deteriorated. Press in the valve cone (1) using a blunt object. Check that it does not bind and that it returns against the seat (2). Note: The safety valve opens if the pressure in the lubrication system is too high; e.g. cold oil conditions.

2 Remove the oil pump. Check the oil strainer to make sure it is not clogged. 3 Check that the oil pipe between the oil pump and cylinder block is properly connected and free of leaks. 4 Check the external drive gears for damage or excessive wear. 5 Check the internal oil pump gears and housing for damage or excessive wear. 6 If the oil pump is faulty, replace the pump. Refer to Service Information: “Oil Pump, Replacement.” 5 7 If the cause of the fault can be traced back to poor oil quality, the oil system must be thoroughly cleaned before filling up with new oil.
