adma Vibhushan Dr. Mangalapalli Balamurali Krishna born on

6th July 1930 passed away on 22nd November 2016 at the ripe age of 86 years. This was a shattering blow to the world of Carnatic Music. Starting his career at the age of six, he went on to conduct more than 25,000 concerts globally.

With a string of titles and awards given by different groups for his proficiency in astrology, Mr. R.S.Maniam is a Medical Assistant and had worked as a Medical Enforcement Officer in profession and currently is an academic staff at Lincoln University College in Malaysia. He has been described by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Saibaba as ‘Divine Astrologer’ and he has been awarded the Nostradamus award in 2010. He has h ad his spiritual training under Swami Bramma Sri Sivananda Maharaj, Ponnamaravathi, Puthukottai District in South India. Mr. Maniam, with an experience of over 36 years in the study of astrology, has contributed many articles to various journals on different aspects of mundane astrology. He attributes his initial learning to Dr. B. V. Raman’s books, later having studied under late Mr. Muthuratina Bharathi. He has been honored the title Jothida Acharya, Jothida Gaurau and Jothida Kalamani by various organizations. He has been doing spiritual sadhana at Laksmy Mantralaya being a senior disciple of Swami Bramma Sri Sivananda Maharaj.

Even in the absence of the above mentioned events, it is also natural that the staff in the temple become negligent or stressed or indisposed to conduct the regular services in the temple, resulting in the accumulation of sins. Rectifying such mistakes and sanctifying the new structures of additions requires the conduct of a set of rituals. These rituals have all the components of the Inaugural Ceremonies, except for the procedure of Adhivasa (immersing the idols in various ingredients and installation.)

he recent election of *Donald Trump as President of the United States, leaves many astrologers and futurists with a somewhat embarrassing reality….almost no one saw the outcome of his surprising victory. Trump’s win befuddled not only astrologers both Eastern and Western but other expert forecasters such as pollsters, media commentators, strategists, academics analysts, wishfully thinking politicians, along with seasoned economists and major business CEOs. The election of Donald Trump is a wake-up call for all futurists to come to terms with the reality, as unwanted as it is, that accurate forecasts, while theoretically possible, did not work so well this time around. While President-Elect Trump’s scantily forecast win merits examination, this article will focus more on exploring those factors that lead to inaccurate forecasts.

Forecasting is Important Forecasting is im portant because it tells us the future environment in which we may need to operate (or avoid operating). Researchers at organizations such as Harvard and MIT/Sloan remind us that the eld of

forecasting has advanced signicantly in recent years. As such, anticipating events has become increasingly more important. People engaged in the affairs of the world must be able to constantly adjust to changing circumstances in a global economy. In order to make those adjustments, forecasters need to envisage what might happen in the world around them. Accuracy in forecasting can mean the difference between being ready and relevant or being out of phase and left behind. Forecasters need to spend more responsible time reviewing their forecasts before engaging with the public in order to help the populace make sound judgments.

The Potential Accuracy of Forecasting All forecasts, whether they are astrological or based on business formulae, deal with potential -- not certainty. The eld of Vedic astrology, thousands of years old, is going through a resurgence in its quality and acceptance in the West. Even so, futurists of any breed still need to listen to what history tells us what we can and cannot predict with certainly (if at all). In addition, prognosticators must continue to develop projections using risk analysis algorithms that are sensitive to shocks and which can help reduce variability. change we are experiencing in modern times, l eads some observers to hold that it is relatively impossible to sustain a high quality rate of predictive accuracy.

forecasting in general is not so much about certainty as it is about opportunity. It is not so much about prediction as it is about preparation.

It appears to some that the grip of uncertainty is eroding our capacity to anticipate what will happen in the future. The stock market has taught us to disclaim that “past performance is not an indicator of future results.” Even Dr. B.V. Raman, considered to be the Father of Modern Astrology, has stated, “Those who know Astrology can only indicate in a way what will happen in the future. Who else except the Creator Brahma, can say with certainty what will denitely happen.”

Three Major Causes of Forecasting Errors

However, prospects for future outcomes can still be reasonably evaluated and forecast in terms of overall trends if they are also accompanied by diligent risk analysis. If there is sufficient accurate data on the probability of a positive outcome, then thorough action plans can be reasonably set and developed to deliver a stated outcome within a specic end date.

Know the Time Horizon The time horizon of the forecast is signicant. If you are forecasting for some very distant time, the expectation of accuracy is not as demanding. If you are forecasting within a smaller period of time, in matters of the moment such as a few days to a year or so, there is an expectation that the outcome of the forecast will be more accurate and complete and applied with more rigor. However, the problem is that less analysis or forethought might go into these shorter time frame forecasts. Academic researchers tell us that forecasts ”are summations of predicted values for several constituents of the phenomenon,” that is the subject of the forecast and forecasting accuracy depends both upon the proper selection of appropriate components and upon “accurate prediction of the components‘ future values.”

What to Consider in Attempting a Forecast Before starting a forecast, an astrologer should consider a few things. 1. “Why is this forecast even needed?” 2. “Is it really appropriate to predict or respond to a client’s desire for that prediction?” 3. “What is its relevance and how reliable do we think we can be in producing this forecast?” Finally it is important to consider, and let people know, that the usefulness and direction given by a forecast might be more important than its overall accuracy. Astrology and

1) Ignoring the environment: Many forecasts do not come about because the forecaster underestimated or left out important factors in the environment surrounding the forecast topic. The forecaster did not adequately understand, identify, or factor in the impact of major environmental variables, such as personal, social, economic, cultural, educational, or political issues. Sage Parashara cautions astrologers to take the impact of the environment into consideration when making astrological judgments. 2) Human Fallibility: The reality is that forecasters are fallible human beings and life is highly creative and thus variable and innovative. While sages such as Maharishi Patanjali speak of advanced intuitive states such as Jyotish Mati Pragya (Star Illumined Mind), very few astrologers could truthfully declare themselves to have innite wisdom and be mistakefree in their event analysis and trend discovery. This is the nature of life on earth. We don’t live in a 100% world. The personal capabilities of an astrologer either facilitate or invalidate their predictions. An honest forecaster is realistic about the nature of relative life and the possibility of being aficted, even blinded, by errors of judgment. Those astrologers who admit that they are not infallible and are honest about that will most likely give the most useful forecasts over time. Addressing the weaknesses of the systems of forecasting and their practitioners helps us avoid unrealistic expectations. Ultimately honesty and realism will help us obtain forecasts that are the more effective and valuable. 3) Cognitive Bias : The mindset, bias, fears, and pre-conditioned expectations of the astrologer or forecaster will strongly inuence the outcome of a forecast. The assumptions and background of the astrologer, their culture, education, emotional nature, and life experience will color and filter where they look and what they see. A bias might contribute to errors in forecasting or give the forecast a mutated shape that doesn’t fit as a pu zz le pi ec e of th e fu tu re . Qu an tu m ph ys ic s makes this point in that the observer affects the systems they observe. An astrologer needs to stay open-minded and challenge even their own assumptions and feelings. People grow, things change. This is the way to evolve and mature. Working


with other astrologers, having open discussions, staying up on world events, and being a life-long learner, all help the forecaster increase their capacity to forecast with greater accuracy and meaning. 4) Many past forecasting errors can also be attributed to an overemphasis on the technology and on computer models. An astrologer might even become enraptured by or de pe nd en t up on so me ne w fo re ca st in g software program or a new technological approach in forecasting and unfortunately lose insight derived from the other areas of input around him.

Major Inuences on Astrologers, Clients and Forecasts 1) Mental Capacity: The Jyotishi’s (astrologer’s) experience in interpreting large sets of complex and attribute-rich data is a key for successful forecasting. The Jyotishi’s mind and intellect must be adept at data visualization and interpretation. Forecasts are colored by the assumptions of both the Jyotis hi and the client. Forecasts are often affected by co-events that the forecaster might not have anticipated. All of these factors contribute to erroneous forecasts. Properly understanding forecasts is essential because expansion or contraction of statements of a projection can result in a revision of a person’s expectations of a future state. 2) Lack of Quality Control: Forecasting by nature tends to be a forward looking activity and Jyotishis might not be spending enough time or rigor in analyzing why previous forecasts have not worked. It is as if these forecasts are best left alone, unless some enterprising, often “outside” person wants to evaluate the past performance of a Jyotishi. However, this outsider is often perceived as an intrusion rather than a valued watchdog of quality predictions. 3) Insufcient Trend Analysis: It might be that not enough time has passed for the Jyotishi to evaluate a large enough number of forecasts and to obtain sufcient feedback on the success of those forecasts. 4) Multi-Skilled: Many clients can become enamored with the behavioral chart interpretation skills of a Jyotishi, but this skill might not always pass on to forecasting capabilities. 5) Outcome Control: It might also be that the Jyotishi states his predictions adamantly to try to control the client’s belief. However, absolute-outcome forecasting might not serve the client as well as offering them a range of possible outcomes within the subject area under discussion.

6) Client Comprehensio n: The delay between a signicant event occurring and its detection might not be fully seen or realized by the client. The interpretation of the forecast or its meaning might not be fully comprehended by the client. The level of sophistication and understanding of the client might not be well developed and incorrect conclusions can be drawn. The Jyotishi needs to help the average client make sense of the trends, exceptions, and important relationships that are hidden within all t he facts and data seen in the chart. Client participation and compliance is a must if the stated outcomes are to be achieved. It is important to gain the client’s attention on the future state and work to stimulate them to take action on it in time. Thoughts and words must culminate in action. If nothing new is done, then nothing new will happen. The future will stay pretty much as it has been, or perhaps could get worse. 7) Delayed Reaction: The client might not act promptly or fully within the time indicated. While client adoption of the Jyotishi’s warnings are assumed, this is frequently not the case. It is the application of the forecasting recommendation that will help those forecasts to be effective. The Jyotishi must also provide the client with something useful and actionable and in a manner that the client will both accept and acquire benet. 8) Unclear Signal Reaction: There can be a multitude of factors for the Jyotishi to anticipate and forecast. It can be difcult for the Jyotishi to state and the client to determine which precursors or triggers should be watched for in the future. Both the Jyotishi and the client must be able to lter out those events which have the most signicance for the client and look for those things that signal the onset of the forecasted event. 9) Forecast within Context: The rules of Vedic astrology are somewhat high level. The Jyotishi must know how to personalize the information. The Jyotishi needs to know the client’s nature and the context of his/her environment to a reasonable extent to generate more capability to personalize delivery of forecasted information to that client. The Jyotishi must not only understand the technical factors of performing a forecast but must also be aware of the external factors of the client, such as the economic, social and cultural conditions around them. Chart interpretation and environmental interpretation must occur simultaneously. Election analysts are telling us that this ability to read a client and/or a political demographic is a skill many strategists lacked but President-Elect Trump possessed.


10) Incomplete and Correct Forecasting Information : If you can’t get conclusive birth data, then you are bordering on guesswork rather than prediction.World or mundane forecasts often focus on the larger social, economic, and political aspects of a society. Usually there will be predictions on the continuation of the status quo and predictions for change. Sometimes there is not much difference in the outcome of these two prediction types.

If the Jyotishi is attempting “world” or public forecasting, certain chart information must be available and must be accurate. Some of the charts needed for public forecasting are: (a) The founding chart of the nation or nations involved. (b) The national leader’s chart (c) The chart for the Saka New Year (rst new Moon in Pisces for the nation’s capital city). (d) Knowledge of the “personality” or culture and modern context of the nation being analyzed. 11) Inaccurate Forecasting Software: The chart calculation software does not calculate timing periods correctly. 12) Unmotivated Client: The client is not ready or does not believe that change will occur or that they will be able to change. The client does not take time ahead to prepare for the anticipated changes. This state of mind does not compel the client to react completely, correctly, nor in time. 13) N e g a t i v e o r A u t h o r i t a t i v e M o t i v a t i o n : Unfortunately, some astrologers might use fear or the projection of negative outcomes to steer the client towards an ulterior motive or a personal outcome they need as the authoritative gure. Sometimes a negative event is forecast unless a corrective measure is done or unless a seemingly negative activity is stopped. Whether a negative event was truly in the future or not, the client is led to believe that the seeming positive outcomes they are now experiencing (or absence of projected negative ones) are due to the countermeasures proclaimed by the dubious astrologer’s recommendations.

Conclusion Someone once said, “The future is not what it used to be.” Jyotishis should be careful about extrapolating the issues that they see today and assume that the future will be driven by those things that are predominant in the present. Forecasting should be comprehensive and examine

many concurrent aspects of a client’s personal life and environment to improve forecasting accuracy. While these guidelines can help avoid many of the forecasting mistakes made in the past, we must remember that the future is a shapeless, organic form. While we can help our clients anticipate the approach of a danger or fortify themselves for an opportunity, we cannot realistically guarantee our clients 100% success 100% of the time. As activities move forward in life they often branch out and correspondingly set in motion other forces and inuences that will change or modify the vision of the original course declared by the astrologer or forecaster. Also one must realize that in the physics of day to day living, there are laws of nature at work that try to move life forces towards a balance point, or perhaps even to entropy and extinction. Not taking these natural counteractions into account will lead to inaccurate forecasts. While disaster might be seen initially by a forecaster, there are forces that interject over time that try to bring and keep life in balance. If one is too biased, either for the positive or the negative, the results of their forecasts might not come to pass.

Don’t be Lazy about the Future We cannot get lazy about the future. Many astrologers have predicted a future event based on past circumstances and formulas and have not succeeded in their prognostications. While traditions and conservative views help us to maintain stability, they need to be properly weighed as to their impact on the future. History is useful, but the future builds off many avors and nuances of the past and present. Some of the events in the past are more on the level of fads and short term trends than issues of fundamental historical importance. Jyotish is the science of light, but we can be blinded by what we see now or what we had been seeing before.

The Enduring Value of Vedic Astrology Many factors creep in from the sides that modify the forecasts we make. The future is negotiable and we can get smarter than our karmas. However, the inaccuracy of past forecasts, or their inconsistent success and application by various astrologers, does lead many observers outside astrology to question their value. We could say that astrology opens the “window” to the future. This might be truer than astrology opening the “door” to the future. Astrology gives a well-crafted glimpse but not the whole picture. However there has been enough astrological success throughout history to conrm that astrological forecasts still provide value to modern society.


A Guide to using Chara Karakas in vedic Astrology | G ARY GOMES Introduction Astrology is an interpretive tradition. Although many look to the classical texts for guidance, the general guideline for all astrologers is that the classical texts are meant to be interpreted liberally, not literally . So, the classical texts, while providing general guidance on interpretation, are not foregone predictors of attributes. They are guides, meant to direct the astrologer to the true nature of the chart. Interpretation of the chart is the job of the astrologer—we are not meant to parrot classical texts, but as direction. This article will attempt to provide the practicing astrologer with a general guide to the astrologer for chart analysis and prediction. Dr. Gary Gomes has been a Vedic Astrologer since 1990. He is an ordained Swami of the Temple of Kriya Yoga and served as the Vice President/President of the Council of Vedic Astrology. He has taught at Kepler College and American College of Vedic Astrolog y (as a Board Member).Many of his articles have been published internationally. Dr. Gomes has appeared on both the radio and TV channels and has been one of the few astrologers who predicted Donald Trump’s victory at the November 2016 US Elections. With many awards and titles, he is respected as one who can convey complicated principles of Jyotisha in an easy and understandable manner.

Controversy – Number of Karakas There is a great deal of controversy, even to this date, regarding the number of charakarakas in Jaimini Astrology —there is even some argument regarding whether Jaimini is a system of its own or merely a subset of Parasari Astrology. Neither question can be answered with any degree of certainty. Focusing on the latter issue first, I can personally say I encountered the charakarakas so often used in Jaimini Astrology in the Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, but this is no guarantee they are a subset of Parasara, as the text appears to be a compendium of techniques, but the fact that these techniques exist side by side would lead one to believe that these techniques can exist in several different configurations. For instance, during my Yogini and Vimshottari Venus dasas, and Venus is my relationship indicator, both dasas were intimately connected with forming new partnerships with people. Since Venus is in my fifth house in the navamsa chart, the relationships were strongly connected with education and learning—and they seemed to come quite easily. Likewise, Mercury dasas were intimately connected with status in life; Jupiter (as Amatya Karaka) connected with work. These karakas seem to function across all dasa systems, in addition to Jaimini, sign-based systems. However, getting back to the controversy about the number of karakas: K.N. Rao teaches seven karakas (in most instances), Sanjay Rath eight karakas, B. Suryanarain Rao, 7 or 8, and Iranganti Rangacharya has found references to six, seven or eight, given special conditions in the chart. My own inclination is to follow the seven karaka system, but I always experiment with eight karakas

The ending moments of Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana are given in the 24 hour clock extending to 30 hours. Of the Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, Ganda and Atiganda are generally spurned for auspicious events and they are marked in red in the Panchanga. Vydhruti pervades from 346°40’ to 360° and Vyatipata from 213°20’ to 226°40’ of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata punyakaala are observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1½ hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the astute. These two belong to the shannavati -96- Sraddhas ordained for a householder. Considering the astronomical implications, the Sayana Vydhruti and Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga and Prabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different from the Nityayogas. The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable. The Chara Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni, Chatushpada, Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas are in their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija and Vishti (or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti or Bhadra is considered to be of dreadful. The forbidden Karanas are marked in red for easy identification. We have most of our religious observances pegged on to the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga. n Medical Astrology there are quite a good number of explanations, astrologically, about the causes of Cancer, an important life style disease of today. In some books Rahu is explained as the planet that provokes Cancer in human beings. Here I put my observational inference after making quite a good number of Cancer cases after verifying birth charts of Cancer patients, as Mars that excites Cancer in human beings. But I have to admit the facts that the study has its limits as to when it will occur and the region of lesion in a human body are to be studied further. The timing of occurrence may be evaluated by analyzing the dasa system, as to the influential period of the planets involved. Mostly by the bhukti or sub period. The part of the body that may affect requires a little more study. But one thing is quite sure, the probability is almost 100%. In this connection I put forth the following planetary conditions that cause Cancer. In my observation Mars is the planet that provokes Cancer in a human body. I codify the condition as follows. 1.

When Mars has any relation with 6th house, it excites Cancer. The situation worsens when the relationship is with 8th house.

When Mars conjuncts with the lord of 6th house in a horoscope the native will get Cancer.

3.

When Mars conjuncts with the lord of Navamsa of 6th lord the native will have Cancer later in age. Usually after 70 years of age.

When the association of Mars is with the lord of 8th house the native’s death will be by Cancer. (The 8th house represents diseases of chronic nature.)

In the circumstances it is to be noted here is that the above said planetary position indicates that the constitution of the body of the native is such that it is vulnerable to Cancer. If special attention is bestowed the disease can be kept at arm’s length by adopting selective foods that avert the chances and resorting to Yoga and pranayama judiciously. At this point it is to be noted that even if the science has advanced very much, no forecast is possible in a person’s life, as such a harmful disease is in store for him. In modern times there’s been an explosion of careers, and the choices now are literally mind-boggling. However, with a few simple techniques, it’s still easy to identify some viable career options unique to each birth chart.

First and Tenth Houses The basic method highlights planets in the kendras of the birth chart. So long as any planet is angular, it will thus either occupy or aspect the 1st or 10th house. Eg, a planet in the 4th aspects the 10th, while a planet in the 7th aspects the 1st. The 10th is an obvious point of focus, because it represents our career – the observable things we do, the karma we perform as per our inclinations, and our aspirations for social recognition. But why the rst house, so favored in South India? In practice, the lagna is the natural starting point to understand any client since it represents prakruti, the primal motive force, or basic intelligence. In other words, the ascendant represents the individual’s instinctive role in life. And it’s the inuence of planets on the ascendant that determines our prakruti. Once we understand the client, we’re better able to anticipate their likely career path. So planets in kendras are key, and one or more angular planets can immediately create a signature for certain career inclinations. So long as we understand the nature of the planets, we can follow their clues to the natural disposition ( prakruti) of the client, and therefore their natural bias for career aptitudes and pursuits. The simplest use of this is to consider the planets as benecs and malecs. Natural benecs are the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter. Natural malecs are the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. With a majority of benecs in kendras, the individual is drawn to the humanistic or “people” professions - arts, media, sales, marketing, teaching, consulting, etc.


With a majority of malecs angular, the individual favors the reality based or scientic professions - the trades, biology, chemistry, computer applications, engineering, mechanics and other physical sciences.

A preponderance of planets in one element may incline one to a certain station in life. But signs are never more than stage setting; the planets are the actors who perform the real drama.

We can also consider the caste of planets. Jupiter and Venus are brahmana. Sun and Mars are kshatriya. Moon and Mercury are vaishya. Saturn is shudra. Rahu and Ketu are mleccha. By noting any caste dominance among angular planets, we might generalize what the likely career orientation will be.

This indicates a natural command-and-control instinct, a bias for administrative or management roles, in elds such as the police or military, or leadership in government. Career Themes via Planetary Combinations Although a single planet might very well nudge the client into a certain occupation or career, in practice we expect more complexity. There are, after all, more careers to choose from than ever, and some of these are combinatorial in nature, eg, forensic accountant, prosthetic engineer, immigration lawyer. If there are two or more angular planets, we may need to determine the relative strength of angular planets by applying certain criteria. For example, a planet is strong in its own or exalted sign, when it has dig bala (directional

strength), when retrograde, or as a full Moon. It is weak when debilitated, combust, in a planetary war (conjunct another true planet within one degree), or as a new Moon. Once we determine the relative hierarchy of angular planets, it’s often the strongest among them that will give the client a bias for a particular career. with Pushya as the constellation, has the power to cancel the negatives of the birth chart and asserting its benec character. Though Pushya constellation is said to be par excellence for all activities, readers are cautioned that Pushya constellation is forbidden for marriage muhurthas.

The most favorable constellation, Dr. Raman (my revered father) tells us, is Pushya. It has the power to neutralize all imbalances that arise due to unfavorable combinations. Texts say that if there are a number of misplaced combinations in a natal chart, selecting a Muhurtha,


(1st), Shashti (6th) and Ekadasi (11 th) going under the name tithigandanthara.

Mahadoshas Muhurtha also speaks of many adverse evils (mahadoshas) that need to be avoided for important events. One of them Panchanga Suddhi tells us that the ve limbs – thithi (lunar day), vara (week day), nakshatra (constellation), yoga (luni solar day) and karana (half a yoga) have to be good. These limbs are said to represent the ve sources of metaphysical energies and when properly selected contribute to good health, better harmony and much happiness. Another dosha that should be avoided while xing a Muhurtha is Surya Sankramana. When the Sun leaves a sign and enters the next sign there is much disturbance of solar forces and xing a Muhurtha during this phase of change of sign is not appropriate. Dr. Raman says that sixteen ghatis (6 hours 24 minutes) before and after the change of sign should be rejected. While not going to other doshas, the following guidelines in xing a proper muhurtha can be followed. 







Avoid the rst two degrees of Leo, Sagittarius and Aries and the last two degrees of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.



Avoid the last 48 minutes – 2 ghatis - of Aslesha, Jyeshta, Moola, Revati and Aswini and the rst 96 minutes – 4 ghatis - of Makha

Avoid Venus in the 6th, particularly for marriage muhurthas.

Avoid Mars in the 8th. 

For marriage muhurthas the ascending lagna should not be the 8 th from the birth lagna of the boy or girl.
