WHY TO CHANGE ECU PARAMETERS IN 2005?
Car manufacturers (nowadays of the world market) have to attend to many parameters such as emissions against pollution, consumption, noise level, etc. A model, in fact, is created to be traded in many more countries than in the past, with different specifications from area to area. The set up of standard injection-ignition systems is not satisfactory, in spite of the enormous means at disposal of manufacturers. The reason lies in the setting of the spark advance map, where excessively prudent levels fixed for average engines cause loss of efficiency. Moreover, fuel injection maps are often too poor in order to keep fuel consumption within reasonable levels. Another important aspect to take into consideration is that the manufacturers of components for automotive logically have many suppliers, sometimes with different quality levels. Also the tolerances and the precision in the production of car parts play an important role in engine efficiency At the end of this introductory description, you certainly understand why every car is really an only car All these and other technical points influence the performance, with the result that cars suffer from some sluggishness in increasing revs and also from irregular distribution of power.

For these reasons we have created RACE software, to cope with hesitations in carburetion and obtain a full and clean acceleration. For customers who desire to improve performances it is possible to obtain an increase in power up to 5-8% on atmospheric engines and up to the 30% on boosted ones. RACE STANDARD: THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT. use and good results. results. It allows the user to act on injection, RACE STANDARD assures both ease to use ignition (real degrees of advance), boosting parameters, correction maps, rev. limiter without worrying about their location. This is possible by the "SETTING FILES" FILES" which locate the several areas containing all the important parameters that control the working of the engine. The user can concentrate his effort on the modification, without thinking about map locations and axe orientations. These maps are edited in three forms: in a numeric table (Cartesian diagram); § § in a 3-D chart § in a two-dimension diagram. RACE STANDARD permits interventions on the maps of all kinds of Eproms (DIL, PLCC32 & 44, PSOP44, SSOP56) as well as hybrid ECUs by the serial programming upgrades (OBDII). The setting files vary in size and location according to the ECU brand, type and numbers, its code and EPROM number. The technical support, the ease of use of the program and the training course allow anyone to work alone and produce perfect custom-made tunes for engines, a necessity especially in cases where mechanical changes have been performed. To make the mechanism clear and to show the importance of this kind of technical support, please have a look at the picture below: in it you can see what appears using a normal editor program or an emulator to read the contents of an EPROM (keeping in mind that an EPROM contains pages and pages like this):
The content is expressed in hexadecimal values (that is, in numbers from 0 to 9 and letters from A to F) with the operative system of the ECU mixed with the maps. It is clear enough that modifying this data is hard work... Even if you show this data in a two-dimension graph the situation appears a bit complicated:
With most programs you have to find the maps yourself, whereas with RACE Standard we do the researching work on your behalf. RACE allows you to modify the original maps stored into the Eprom file.

As the EPROM file contains lots of maps and curves not only tied to the engine working, the tuner needs either to be experienced on map searching (neither easy not fast nowadays with the actual level of technology) or to have an instrument to filter engine setting parameters and avoid the risk o f wrong modifications (example: part of the management program). The filter in our system is the SETTING FILE, a real decoding mask, interpreter of the binary/hex logic of the original parameters. They are converted and translated into an easy logic that allows simply technical evaluations. The SETTING FILE is a software interface specific for RACE.
After having identified the setting file needed (ECU and EPROM numbers, checksum) you have a normal menu page showing all the maps available: injection, ignition, boost, rev limiter, correction maps, etc.. Next step: choose the map to modify!

The list of maps allow you to choose exactly the parameters on which you need to work: no wasting of time, no long researches through pages and pages of numbers. Just a click, then
The table shows the logic of the map (in this case spark advance at part load): a Cartesian diagram with RPM (revolutions per minute) and LOAD as axes and, in maps that manage ignition, REAL DEGREES OF SPARK ADVANCE . The map is shown exactly as created by the manufacturer, clearly . The modification of map values can be done in the Cartesian diagram, working on numeric values, and in the two-dimension diagram. You can decide to increase or decrease the values with percentage or absolute variations.

All the maps can be visualized as numeric tables, two-dimension diagrams and 3-D charts. This last option is really useful to examine the maps in order to find imperfections, holes , etc.
This opportunity helps in many situations to use RACE as a diagnostic system...

It is important to know that RACE gives the opportunity to load, see and compare two different files (i.e. an original and a modified file). You can have them visualized contemporarily in the two dimension diagram; in the Cartesian diagram you will have a red frame around the cells containing modified parameters.
Moreover, you can see the differences reported numerically (+00000 where there are no differences between the two files). As an example, here below you can see the boost pressure limiter on an Audi A3 2.0 TDI EDC16: the 3-D chart shows clearly the absolute pressure in millibar... In some part of the map, the limiter has been increased to 200 millibar, that is 0,2 bar.

In the three-dimension diagram, you can see immediately also the differences between original and modified files: you can see even more clearly the difference between original and modified performance, increased to 200 millibar.
And what about the RPM limiter, which is usually very difficult to find without information? Well, you have only to introduce the new RPM limiter or the original, if you need to reset the original value. You have not to look for it, we think about searching it for immediate work... The list of maps difficult to be located, anyway, is quite long: maps for the limitation of speed, RPM, torque, smoke, pressure, etc are no longer problems...

If you wish to modify a specific map in a linear, semi-automatic way, you have another interesting, profitable function working for you: the FLOOR SUM.
This function of RACE allows the tuner to increase or decrease values on a selected area of one map. This area can be imagined as a surface represented by the user the floor: determines the increment for each angle of the floor. Obviously the values inbetween these 4 angles will be modified as linear interpolation of them. A modification of part of a map created in this way is probably much more precise and clean in its working than any other way

This semi-automatic system permits precise and homogeneous modifications of the original maps.
If you have a look at the values on the map, you will see the modified area and the logic of the modification And you can also check, on the 3-D chart, the area modified and what you have added for the modification

At the end of the modification procedure, RACE supplies a summary of the operation in order to check our choices once again before the definitive saving or OBDII serial programming. You can also decide to prepare a scrambled file to be used with a protection board.
A problematic aspect for tuners who use graphic programs is often represented by the checksum recalculation. During the chip tuning operations, the original parameters stored into the eprom file change, so obviously the sum of all the parameters will change as a consequence of that. RACE, by means of the setting files, automatically and always resets this fundamental parameter to avid lights on the dashboard switched on and problem to start the engine... The setting files therefore are instructions, specific for every file contained in the Eprom: they allow RACE to show all the maps directly. They are stored in our Internet setting file data bank, download area (see following pages).
RACE STANDARD MOTORBIKE VERSION RACE STANDARD MOTORBIKE VERSION is a specific application of our software to this special world. The technical features are exactly the same as the normal RACE Standard version. The MOTORBIKE VERSION of RACE allows working on:

INTERNET SETTING FILE DATABANK Internet is today the easiest-to-use and widespread system to get information everywhere. It is enough having a PC and a modem to be in the position to give and take information. This is the reason why we have chosen to place our setting files databank on the Internet, inside our site in a specific section. The owner of RACE is supplied with his own password and code to enter, it is enough to choose what is needed and quickly download it onto the PC. The data bank is kept up-to-date, with all the latest settings: new models, new ECU models, new Eprom, etc. Moreover, customers can download the latest releases of our software RACE: of course the easier and faster way to work being supported in any situation.
HOW TO ENTER THE SETTING FILE DATA BANK: The setting file data bank is available in our HOME PAGE, DOWNLOAD section. It will be displayed on the following screen: click your mouse on LOG IN.
A screen asking your own code and password will appear.
If you wish to see the setting files data bank but you do not have a customer code, you can enter and visit it by typing guest for password and code. You can also download a free version of our RACE demo.

Now a setting file can be selected by clicking DOWNLOAD, unless you wish to take a look at the news or updates (may be the last version of the software or a new release of the handbook). Please note that these new releases (software or handbooks) can always be downloaded for free from the web site. It is now clear that our web site contains not only setting files but also everything needed, to be a good tuner.
After having typed the code and password, the setting file data bank will appear on the screen. The setting files are shown in three different ways; they are selected as follow: A. Typing only the ECU code (all the setting files with that ECU code will be displayed);
B. Typing only the Eprom checksum (all the setting files with that Eprom checksum will be displayed);
C. Selecting the MANUFACTURER , then the MODEL and last the VERSION (ENGINE AND ECU), we can find the necessary setting file.

RACE PROFESSIONAL: FULL EXPLOITATION! AUTONOMY SEARCHES AND SUPPORT If you aspire to be free to search the maps by yourself or if you already use a graphic program and you are experienced in map searching but you wish to have powerful software in your hands with huge opportunities, RACE PROFESSIONAL is the version suitable for you. It joins the possibility of full, independent searches to the reliability and speed of modification granted by the technical support of RACE Standard through the setting file map location.
RACE Professional has been developed to allow map searches. It enables the user to identify the working parameters of the engine without setting files. The user can find by himself the areas of the different maps, rev limiters, checksum areas, etc.. The complete EPROM file (or part of it) is shown in decimal or hexadecimal numbers, 2 and/or 3-D chart. Obviously, it requires advanced knowledge of the logic basing map working and location.

RACE PROFESSIONAL offers useful tools such as markers for researching significant values inside the maps. It allows the visualization of the map in 8 or 16 bit format (addresses 8/16 bit and values 8/16 bit) with the possibility of inversion between MSB and LSB, even or odd alignment, printing of the pre-selected areas, etc. You can decide to examine the byte as inverted for those maps 16 bit where there is this kind of logic. You can choose the first cell and the number of columns so as to have one map visualized in the correct way, as it has been created And the list goes on
After having selected an area, for example, it is possible to expand the image in order to better visualize it: the best way to analyze an area and study possible maps.

A function called Starting Address allows to set the address of the cursor as first address to the left of the graph (command also available by pressing the right button of the mouse). Moreover, after having selected an address of the image in the Eprom graph, you can pass directly to the same address in complete Eprom view, (also by clicking the right button of the mouse).

Another option is the function Image Surface. This visualization allows you to see the values of a 3-D chart: the axis is automatically set to 16 columns by 16 rows, but we can change them and then set Starting address, Final address, Columns number, and Rows number.
Once the parameters are set, we can visualize directly the 3-D chart surface concerning the map we are examining, as shown in the picture.
As already pointed out, the customer is not supported with technical information about the addresses of the maps, REV limiter, formulas for calculating advance real degrees, checksum, etc. This kind of information is available through the setting files.

CHECKSUM UPGRADES FOR RACE RACE can be fully exploited by the extensions checksum upgrades . They allow to reset the checksum in those cases where an algorithm formula protects the original software of the EPROM. The checksum modules" are upgrade for our software RACE, they are not available as stand alone checksum module . The checksum recalculation is automatically and immediately accomplished after every modification set on the file, both by using a setting file and by working on the whole EPROM file (PROFESSIONAL VERSION). REAL TIME TUNING: MET16 EPROM EMULATOR RACE, as explained, can be utilized for modifying the maps in a really facile, professional way. The development of a tailor made modification anyway can be easier as well as faster with MET16 EPROM EMULATOR , that enables you to do real time modification while the engine is working. This is a shortcut to avoid static modifications, which would imply several successive corrections to get a good result (the tuner would need to test the modification on the car every time to perfect it). MET16 EPROM emulator allows you to obviate the slowness and the loss of precision of the static method. FUNDAMENTAL HELP: MET16 allows the tuner to see in real time the area of the maps read by the ECU s microprocessor.
By connecting the emulator to the ECU board - and the emulator body to a laptop - it is possible to see a red trace moving across the maps according to RPM and LOAD. The red trace gives the knowledge of the parameters to modify , a powerful technical way for high level tailor made works. Moreover, by pressing ESC on the keyboard, you have the possibility to switch between ORI and MOD files, so as to test and feel the difference while the engine is running. Do you know a better tool for the development of mod files? MET16 (MEMORY EMULATOR TRACER) 8/16 bit is provided with 2 RAM memories, 8 Mbit each.
The kit supplied includes all flat cables (DIL 28 & 32, PLCC 28/32 & 32/32, PLCC44 and PSOP44) for a real time working. The connection to the computer is done through PARALLEL port. MET16 EPROM emulator allows also the tuning of those cars where an algorithm formula protects the original software of the EPROM (on-line checksum algorithm correction ): the checksum correction is done after every modification in real time automatically and immediately.

FLASH OBDII TUNING SERIAL READING/PROGRAMMING UPGRADE FOR RACE
FLASH OBDII TUNING is an innovating software extension of RACE, created to read and reprogram ECUs by serial port (OBDII or diagnostic) on cars and trucks . FLASH OBDII TUNING SYSTEM allows ECU data upgrading just by the serial port, for micro-hybrid ECUs and Flash Eprom boards. Simply by connecting a specific cable to the diagnostic port of the car, it is possible to program a new set up of the memory, reaching the best performance in short times. A specific software upgrades RACE to communicate with the ECUs. FLASH completes the traditional chip tuning system, based on RACE software. It enables the user to manage injection, ignition, rev limiter and all the maps usually available with RACE through the setting files, enabling the reprogramming procedure without any physical intervention on the ECU s EPROM. Specific cables are supplied to connect the laptop to OBDII port.
FLASH OBDII TUNING is the answer to tune those cars where either t he normal approach is not permitted or a flash EPROM PSOP is soldered on the ECU s board.

On most vehicles it is possible to read the original file loaded into the EPROM: from that file you will create your own modified file. The cable used for reading the file is the one that has to be utilized to tune the car s performances. The modified file is created in the same way as the traditional system, by means of either the setting file or the full image analysis (RACE PROFESSIONAL).
Please note that it is always fundamental to start the modification phase from the original file - stored into the ECU - so as to allow situations difficult to justify, such as a modified file of a different car loaded (example Alfa Romeo instead of Fiat). The diagnostic systems, in fact, allows you to check the ISO code and other specific parameters like the chassis number. The reprogramming operation is achieved in short times and in a clear way so as to avoid whatsoever sort of error. The user just needs to follow the instruction displayed on the screen to complete the operation. The perfect way to offer personal solutions for your customers
FLASH enables RACE to effect map modifications with the certainty to achieve good results thanks to the precision and the reliability of the setting files joined to the speed of execution guaranteed by the serial programming upgrade.
IMPORTANT: DIFFERENTLY FROM OTHER SERIAL PROGRAMMING TOOLS/SYSTEMS AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET, RACE CAN RETRIEVE THE SERIAL COMMUNICATION AFTER EVENTUAL BLOCKING OF THE SERIAL PROGRAMMING OPERATIONS. (EXAMPLE: OBDII CABLE DETACHED BEFORE THAT THE SERIAL PROGRAMMING HAS BEEN COMPLETED). LAST GENERATION ECU READING/PROGRAMMING TOOL
555 PRO is a universal reader/programmer (it does not require our RACE software necessarily) that allows the user to read and program files in the ECU supplied with MOTOROLA MPC555/556/564 processor (essential). 555 PRO requires the ECU to be open, on the bench , as the reading/programming operations are realized by linking a flat cable to a specific area of the ECU (the tool, on the other side, is linked to the USB port of a computer). 555 PRO allows also to create perfect copies of the whole software of an ECU (after having read the original ECU software). The software allows to read and program the WHOLE ECU content of: ·
