Installation The Data Management Tool (DMT) is delivered as additional files to be placed in the Epicor client directory. It can be used on Windows XP, Window 7 , Windows 2003 Server or windows 2008 Server both 32 and 64 Bit. NOTE: The DMT is Version specific; if you change from 9.04.506 to 9.04.507 or another service pack you will need the correct DMT version. The DMT will not work if it is not for the correct version. Please See the DMT Installation Guide for further details.
Logging into the Tool When you run DMT.exe you will be presented with the following screen.
Enter the Server and Port of your Appserver for the environment you would like to connect to. This can be found in the bottom right hand corner of the normal Epicor client.
Then enter the Epicor username and password you would like any imported transactions to be placed under and press ‘OK’. This will check the License file is in place and open the main screen.

At the bottom of the main screen, the tool will show the c urrent user, Company server and port. Note Although this will be used as the default company for importing, updating etc, this can be overridden by including the company ID in the Import data.

Process Menus The DMT supports a number of different entities to import into, a full list is available in the DMT Supported Entities document. Selecting an Area such as Inventory, will drop down additional menus and
available processes. As an example the Part process has been chosen.
All menu items have a similar interface. Once a file is opened it is displayed for reference. Validate Columns can be selected to check that the columns names are correct. Required Columns list the minimum required columns to work with the import. Template Builder allows the user to build a CSV file of the columns required Add / Update / Delete allow user to contro l how the process will behave. Statistics of the import are providing during loading. Multiple Imports can run at the same time and are available from the imports drop down menu.

Loading Data into DMT The data to be pro cessed can be loaded into the screen using the ‘Source’ button in the top left of the screen. This can be used to browse and can load CSV,TAB, XLS, and XLSX formats
Once the data is loaded it can be checked it has no invalid columns by pressing the ”validate columns” function.
Required Columns The ‘required columns’ function when pressed will return the minimum data the system requires for processing. In this case the following was returned

Validate Columns The ‘Validate Columns’ function when pressed checks the column headers against the Epicor system. It will inform that all the columns are OK or if there is a problem with the header information.
To establish the correct fields to use, you can use the field help within Epicor 9 or the template builder.
Template Builder The template builder is built into the DMT. The template builder function is in the bottom right of the processing screen. When the template builder is loaded the system will load up the data definitions for the data set you are Processing.

6
By selecting the fields required, the create template function in the bottom right can be used to generate a template in a CSV format. This can then be populated and you can ensure the column headers are correct.
View Function This function opens the screen data in excel. (Or the registered application for t he filetype) This allows you to change / fix the data and then Reload it into DMT.
Processing Three checkboxes to the middle right allow you to identify what type of data process you would like to run. These functions allow Delete, Update Only and Add new records m ethods. Add and Update can be run together, but sometime Add only is a faster process. Note some imports only allow a subset of these functions.

While importing the screen will inform the user of statistics.
Error Logging When the DMT processes its data the system client business objects are utilised. This allows the tool to act and give errors in the same way the client would. Some examples of this would be field format, child records not created, etc. These errors are written to an error log and can be viewed from screen. If an invalid typecode of ‘R’ is entered, the DMT will log an error upon reprocessing identifying the record where the error occurred.

8
A reprocessing file has been generated called SourceFilename.Errors.Reprocess.csv for the record(s) in error. This can now be modified and corrected, then reprocessed.

Completion Log Completion logs are also created by default that provides an audit trace of what was imported and the statistics for future planning of timings.

Concurrent/Multiple Imports DMT can be run by multiple clients or with multiple threads within the same client concurrently. These separate updates can be navigated to by using the ‘Imports’ menu. This can allow for higher throughput against the database dependant on hardware. An example would be loading 500K parts; the source file can be split into 5 files and processed in parallel.
Scripting The DMT can be scripted from the command line, this can allow for the controlled importing of different areas such as Parts, Bills of materials and Bills of operations after each other. Further documentation is available in the template and documentation pack.
