Activity: DETERMINATION OF THE LIME REQUIREMENTS OF AN ORE Objective: To determine the lime requirements of an ore Procedure: 1. Put 50-gram sample of dry ground ore in 8 oz. bottles with 200 mL of distilled water. Add no lime to the first bottle; to the second, the equivalent of 0.5 kg CaO per ton of solution is added; to the third, fourth and other bottles, 1.0 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 etc. kg CaO per ton of solution is added. 2. Stopper the bottles and agitate for 1 hour, after which filter the pulp and get the pH value of the filtrate. Determine the amount of CaO remaining by Clenell’s method; that is, titration with a standard oxalic acid solution using phenolphthalein as indicator. Equipment Required: pH meter bottle rollers graduated cylinder (100 mL) volumetric flask (1000 mL) burette filter funnel filter paper 8-oz. bottles with stoppers Mettler balance 400 grams of dry ground ore Calcium oxide Oxalic acid Phenolphthalein Distilled water
