Question2: What is percentage increase in sales of scooter in 2008 w.r.t. 2007? a) 25% b) 28% c) 31% d) 29% Solution: % increase in sales = (614476)/476 * 100 = 138/476 * 100 Approximate value of 138/476 = 150/500 = 3/10 = 0.3/1 138/476 = (138+x)/500 Increase in denominator = 500 – 476 = 24 Corresponding Increase in Numerator= 24 x 0.3 = 7.2 So, 138/476 = (138+7.2) / (476+24) = 145.2/500 = 0.2904 Answer = 29.04 % Hence option D is correct. If you use calculator and find out the exact value of 138/476 = 28.99% So, Practice this method of division which will be very helpful in saving your time In Data Interpretation. Hope its clear.
kam 5 May 2014 at 19:02 Dint undrstnd sir,why ur converting 124 to 150..n then taking ratio of 3/4 n most imp is when deno. Is increased by 24 then why only 17 is taken coz as far as i knw ,same no is increased/decreased/multiply in both so tht the fraction remains same....m i true? Can u plz give some examples it will be vry hlpful to me coz ur method is easy i knw bt m nt able to undrstnd properly....thnks
Ravi Mishra 5 May 2014 at 19:49 Hello Kam, first we approxiate the fraction to a nearest ratio. To get that I made 124 , 150 . And denominator 200. I got an approx ratio 3/4. same no is not added/subtracted rather nos are added in the ratio of approx fraction. If denominator is changed to 200 it is increased by 23, now numerator should be increased such that increase in numerator is 3/4 of denominator approx 17.

You can approximate it to 150 or 100 . But keep in mind if you are increasing denominator increase numerator. And if you decrease denominator decrease numerator too for approximation. But i will prefer to approximate to 100. since division by 100 will be easiest. Solve your question approximating 100 and then 150. In both cases you wiill get approx same answer. Good Luck :)

RAVI MISHRA 20 November 2014 at 16:36 Hello, I am really sorry i could not post article on Approximation & Simplification. I tried to write Approximation & Simplification Article twice, But i was not satisfied with the outcome. So I have

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA decided not to post simplification Article. Instead, I have decided to take an online live workshop on Simplification techniques or i can make few videos and post them on YouTube. I cannot commit when i will do that, But i promise it is in my To Do List. So here i am providing you the solution of above questions which may help you.
1) 12.36 * 18.15 + 21.52 (12+0.36) * 18.15. 12*18.15 = 12*18 + 12*0.15 = 216 + 1.8 = 217.8 Now no need to calculate 0.36 * 18.15 separately because 0.36*18.15 = 0.03 * ( 12*18.15 ) = 0.03 * 217.8 = 6.534 (observing such patterns is very important as it reduces lot of calculation) 12.36*18.15 + 21.52 = 217.8 + 6.534 + 21.52 = 245.854 answer. 2)0.09*6.8* ?=2.142 => 0.612* ? = 2.142 ( if you observe without dividing you will know answer will be more than 3. There is only one option more than 3. So, either 3.5 will be correct or none of these will be correct. Now put 3.5 in place of question mark and check : Do we get 2.142? 0.612 * 3.5 = 0.612 ( 3+ 0.5 ) = 0.612 ( 3 + 1/2) = 1.836 + 0.306 = 2.142 => 3.5 is correct. Note: Observing options helps us very much in Simplification. 3) x% of 920 * 7.5 = 2898 => x% of 920 * 30/4 = 2898 (since 7.5 can be written as 30/4 ) => x% of 230 * 30 = 2898 => x% of 6900 = 2898 Just by observation you will know that answer will be more than 40%. Let us find out. 40% of 6900 = 0.4 * 6900 = 2760 4% = 276 (4% = 40% / 10 ) 2% = 138 ( 2% = 4% / 2 ) so, 42% = 40% + 2% = 2760 + 138 = 2898 Answer = 42% 4) 69.2*18.4*4.5 = ? ( 5729.76 , 5972.76 , 5279.76 , 5792.76, None) write 18.4 = 92/5 & 4.5 = 9/2 69.2 * 92/5 * 9/2 = 69.2 * 82.8

3) For seven digit division you can leave four digits if options are not very close. ( it works most of the time) For more understanding you can read the comment section of article " How to divide two numbers quickly" where i have explained few higher digit divisions.

Now if you calculate 69.2*80 then 69.2*0.8 is automatically calculated, 69.2*2 can also be easily calculated. 69.2* (80+2+0.8 ) = 5536 + 138.4 + 55.36 = 5729.76 Note: There are others methods too which can be used to solve such questions quickly. I have explained here the simplest & easiest one.

Anonymous 8 May 2014 at 09:25 I was doing a question in which it was asked to find :how much approx is 37 of 108 ? ( a- 30 , b-33 , c-34 , d-35 ) I did like this....please tell me what is wrong in this..given answer is 34 37/108=30/100=3/10=0.3 Now, 8*0.3=2.4 , so i will subtract 2.4 from 37 which will give 34.6 Therefore, from your method my answer is 34.6 % . Now the question is how to know that i should mark 34 or 35.Both are in the options.Please explain i'm confused. Reply Replies Ravi Mishra 8 May 2014 at 18:09 If answer options are very close. Approximate it to a closer value for example 37/108 ~ 36/108 ~ 1/3 ~ .33/1 1/3 is a better approximation ( better approximation gives you answer very close to exact value) . Now make denominator 100. decrease in denominator =8 decrease in numerator= 8*.33= 2.64 37/108~ 34.36/100~ 34.36%. So answer will be 34. Just practice weekly with 4-5 fractions every week to master this method. The better you approximate. The closer you get to exact value. If you use calculator exact value is 34.25. Hope its clear. Good Luck :)

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA Replies Ravi Mishra 10 May 2014 at 06:36 Hi, Percentage Change=(1458865-1345678)/1345678*100= [1458865/1345678)-1]*100 1458865/1345678~ 14588/13456 ( removing two digits from numerator and denominator will not impact much on our calculation). 14588/13456~ 14/13 ( approximate ratio) make denominator= 13000 decrease in denominator= 456~ 13*35 so decrease in numerator=14*35=490 so 14588/13456=14098/13000= 1.0844 so percentage change=(1.0844-1)*100=8.44% if you use calculator exact value=8.41% Hope you understood:) which is approximately 8.5%. Hello sir.... these articles are really very useful for studying DI... Sir there was one question in which they were asking to calculate 4990/42150, then is it possible to calculate this number while using this technique... Reply Replies Ravi Mishra 20 June 2014 at 22:07 Hello Kushal , Yes this division can also be done using this method just you need to approximate this fraction: 4990/42150 < 4990/42100 ====> Now calculate 4990/42100 actual answer will be slightly less than this fraction. 499/421 ~ 500/425 ~ 100/85 it means if you increase denominator by 85 numerator must be increased by 100. 499/421 ~ /500 ( denominator increased by 79 numerator must be increased by 93 approx)

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA 499/421 ~ 592/500 ~ 1.184 499/4210 ~ 0.1184. Exact Value of 499/42150 using calculator will be = 0.11838.. so we got our answer very close to actual value. But there is an better approach if the numerator or denominator are very close to century number. Method 2: 499/421 ~ 500/420 ( Here i have increased numerator by 1 and decreased denominator by one. so 499/421 will be slightly less than 500/420 . So now let us calculate 500/420 = 50/42 = 25/21 = 1.1904 ( our answer will be slightly less than this value as discussed above ) and you will be able to mark your answer. Hope you understood :) Good Luck :)
Khushal Garg 21 June 2014 at 00:23 Thank you sir... :) But the options were like 11.49 and 11.84 so which method according to you I should as the options are so close? [Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA and the options are very close. (a) 4.8 (b) 4.7 (c) 4.5 (d) 5.2. i am getting 4.296 don't know in such case which is correct. Reply Replies Ravi Mishra 11 September 2014 at 11:02 Hi Jess, Yes, if options are close there is ambiguity, the better you approximate the fraction => closer will be your answer.Here answer is 4.5 which is closer to 4.3 => In 99% cases your answer will be the closest one you got. But if you have doubt like no are very very close ( Rarely such things are tested in DI, but in banks exams they do ) You can check using an alternate approach. Let us check option (C) => I chose 4.5 because it is easy to multiply with 4.5. 290 * 4.5 = (300-10) * 4.5 = 1350 - 45 = 1305 => Your answer is actually less than 4.5 => But no option is less than 4.5 so mark (C) option. Hope you understood. Note: Apply division rule without any doubt if options di㈮ㄸer from each other by at least 0.5 => You will always get your answer using division rule. If not => then use the alternate approaches like I discussed above. Hope you understood. Good Luck :)

Sukrit 21 January 2015 at 15:40 sir, why u r not converting 1789 into 3 digit number as u hv done before.. so that 1789/762~(178.9/762)*10~179/762 now 179/762=> 200/800=>1/4 for an increament of 38 in denominator,we hv to increase the numerator by 9.5~10 so, 179/762~189/800=2.36 answer
RAVI MISHRA 21 January 2015 at 15:51 @Sukrit, You can convert it into three digits and then approximate or you can do it directly too. There is no problem. Both are valid. This step is for getting approximate ratio which can be obtained by both the approaches. Hope you understood. Cheers, RaMo

sir, i hv a prblm in solving 9248/136. i hv done this qus like this9248/136~(924.8/136)*10~(925/136)*10 now, 925/136=>900/100=>9/1 so, for an increament of 36 in denominator we have to increase the numerator by 324. so, 925/136~601/100 so ans will be (601/100)*10=60.

RAVI MISHRA 21 January 2015 at 16:25 Hi Sukrit, Better the approximation => Closer will be the answer. When our approximated fraction is much diverted than original fraction then our answer will also divert a lot. 925/136 => Obviously our method tells us that when increase/decrease in numerator in numerator & denominator is in same ratio as original one then fraction remains same. => Since roughly I unit decrease in denominator => 9 unit decrease in numerator. So even while approximating use this => when we are saying => 925/136 ~ 900/100 [ we are loosing accuracy because of decrease of 36 in denominator and decrease of only 25 in numerator => when your know its roughly 9/1 => corresponding decreases must be in line with given ratio for better approximation] Its not always necessary to make numerator in 100's and denominators also in 100's rather there are other ways in which fractions can be approximated without loosing accuracy. Better Approximation: 925/136 => 910/130 = 7/1 => for 36 decrease in denominator => 36*7 = 252 decrease in numerator => (925-252 ) / 100 = 673/100 = 67.3 ( close to actual value) Note : Better the approximate closer will the answer.

denominator and numerator are close.
Now since approximate ratio is 0.9 => if you increase denominator by 1 => Numerator must be increased by 0.9. So, in order to make denominator = 250 => denominator must be increased by 7. increase in numerator = 0.9 * 7 = 6.3 ( you may take it 6 or 6.5 for easier calculation ) => 214/243 = (214+6)/(243+7) = 220/250 = 0.88 Answer.

214/243 ~ 0.9 ( making denominator 250 & numerator 225. 225/250 = 0.9 ).
Answer using calculator = 0.880658.. Method 2: When denominator is very close to multiple of 50 or 100. There is a better alternate way to calculate the value. 214/243 ------(1) make denominator 250 without changing numerator. 214/250 ----- (2) now value of equation 1 will slightly more than the value in .equation 2.

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA 214/250 = 0.856. so, 214/243 > 0.856 ( in objective questions, this is very useful. whichever option is more than 0.856 and close to it will be the answer) If answers are very close you apply Method 1. Otherwise, method 2 will give you answer quickly. Hope you understood:) Do provide your feedback :)
Ravi Mishra 16 September 2014 at 05:09 Also, while applying Method 1. For calculating, approximate ratio => nos are close you can take it 1. ( or make numerator 250 and denominator 250 as per method ) 214/243 ~ (214+7) / (243+7) = 221/250 = 0.884 => will also give you answer.

Hello, I stated it that if you increase/Decrease the numerator follow same thing for denominator too. I said so because if you dont follow this your approximate fraction will deviate from the actual fraction. But if numbers are close to century numbers for finding approximate values you can do otherwise too.
199/211 Step1: Approximate Fraction= 200/200 =1/1 ( here i increased numerator by 1 and decreased denominator by 11 => when any of numerator or denominator is very close to century number or 50s you can do like this) Step2: Make denominator =200 ( decrease of 11) Decrease in Numerator = 11 ( since approximate fraction is 1/1) 199/211 = 188/200 = 0.94

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA OPTIONS are 2700 2803 2900 2785 Reply Replies RAVI MISHRA 23 June 2015 at 13:23 This method works well only when number of digits are same in numerator and denominator or denominator is having more number of digits than numerator. But if number of digits in numerator is more than denominator there is more amount of error. So if options are very close and number of digits in numerator is more than denominator avoid this method. #RaMo

Reply Replies RAVI MISHRA 23 June 2015 at 13:16 Hello Uva, Extremely sorry for replying you too late. This method works well when number of digits in denominator is equal to 3 or more and numerator has equal or lesser number of digits than denominator. Or you can say numerator should not be more than 10 times of denominator. Also do not use this method for division of two digit numbers. In your question numerator is approx three thousand times denominator that is y error is more. Hope you get it. If not you can ask me on Twitter @Ask_RaMo for prompt reply.

but to find exact value i did as u said ; 50/50 =1 , than 1*25 =25 , adding to numerator 41/50=0 .82 but ans is arnd 60% Reply Replies
Look this method is not so useful in two digit division since the approximation we do may deviate a lot. So if you approximate it 15/25 you will get a closer answer but 50/50 will give you wrong value. So better not to use this in two digit division. Two digit divisions can be easily calculated using percentage to fraction conversion. Read that article available on blog.

Krishna Kotiyal 11 September 2015 at 13:24 Hello sir nice article but there is one confusion in the above method this is what you've done "So, if increase in numerator = 25 ;the value of fraction will not change. (since 25/45=5/9 as discussed in step 3)" here you have multiplied the value 5 by 5 and then added to numerator as you've got 45

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA a㜸㘹er multiplying 9 by 5 it is OK. but when I went thru the comments you are adding the value came a㜸㘹er multiplying the ratio to the number E.g. Step3: Corresponding increase in numerator to keep ratio Constant. Increase in numerator=2/3*19=38/3=12.67 Step4: 53/81= (53+12.67)/(81+19) . = 65.67/100 now here you have added 12.67. please help me on this Reply Replies RAVI MISHRA 11 September 2015 at 13:39 In both case we have followed the same thing change in num/ change in den = approximated ratio. Even in the first case if you use deno = 45 you can calculate num by 5/9*45= 25 So, sometimes directly we know the numbers which are in approximate ratio sometimes we calculate.
Krishna Kotiyal 11 September 2015 at 23:06 Thanks for the prompt reply Sir, you are doing a gr8 job a㜸㘹er going by ur method on dividing 3699/2580 I've got 1.423 as answer. and using calculator I got 1.433. So my question is is how to judge which option is the right answer in case of close options as answers for e.g. in this case if the options were 1.413 , 1.433, 1.403 and 1.443. Reply Replies Krishna Kotiyal 12 September 2015 at 11:04 I was trying this method on this question 283574.976 ÷ 36.079 x 11.976 options are 1970 , 2020 , 2070 , 2120 , 2270 and was not able to calculate the value. Sir, pls explain how to do this and if there is any post related to approximation please suggest.

RAVI MISHRA 12 September 2015 at 11:31 Krishna,
Like 369/258 ~ 3/2 ( better approx in this case than 4/3 ) since num is more than denominator better approx can be obtained if Numerator is increasing by more value than den. Same in decrease case. For such case there is another method too which can give u exact answer. I have taught my students that method. Will try to write an article on it and publish it asap.

Look if Numerator is lesser than denominator error % is maximum 0.5%. But if denominator becomes lesser than numerator the error margin increases and if answers are closer then good approximation of approximate fraction will hold key for getting correct answer.
For second question you need to learn approx techniques which I will covering in coming articles. RaMo

[Data Interpretation1] How to Calculate Division of two numbers quickly? ~ RAVI MOHAN MISHRA Its necessary that if deno is increase than neum has to increase and vice versa Reply Replies RAVI MISHRA 4 February 2016 at 18:54 Payal, The reason is that the better your approximate ratio is the better your final answer will be. Increasing numerator tries to increase overall fraction while increasing denominator tries to decrease overall fraction so when both are increased or both are decreased there is balancing one is trying to increases value and other is trying to decrease the value so approximate ratio is not much deviated. That is why it is recommended to either increases both or decrease both for better value of approximate ratio and hence better value of final answer. Regards, RaMO

Thank you sir, Found this article very useful but..sir i have 1 doubt .As u said we have to make our denominator nearest to centuary number. Exp: For 482/855 you took 900 for denominator n 500 for 482. Now when fraction it we get 5/9 till here i understood..but sir last me 25 ko aapne kaise laya n use kaise hua wo...plz elucidate it..waiting for ur revert..
