There are remains of cordw ood buildings in Greece and Siberia that date back a thousand thousand years.
Before you B uild uild: As with wi th all building building methods, planning planning is necessary. necessary. Logs need to be dried to prevent prev ent expansion, shrinking and cracking. Trees should be cut and debarked, then allowed to dry for 1-2 years, before the y are cut into lengths. lengths. Or, if you wan w antt your wood wo od to dry faster, split it. The w ood w ill dry faster, faster, and it w ill crack crack and check less when in the w all. all. Before placing in the w all, all, spray spray or soak the co rdwoo d in Borax. The Borax acts as an insecticide, a wood preservative and a fungicide. Use four cups of Borax (borate) mixed in a gallon gallon of hot w ater. This can be sprayed sprayed on, or the logs can be dipped dip ped in the solution. solution. You w ant your mortar mortar to be ' soft' or a little little flexible, not straight straight concrete co ncrete or brick mud, because the logs continually shrink and swell. R-value depends on the species of wood, wo od, thickness thi ckness,, and insulat insulation ion you chose. Cedar has an R-value R-value of 1.5 per inch; cut to 18" the R-value woul wo uld d be approximately approximately R-27. The mortar will need to be i nsul nsulated ated to bring the R-v alue alue up to par wi th the w ood. In Canada, Canada, Cliff Stockey builds double wall homes (not shown): two cordwood walls with a vapor barrier and insulation in between. Cliff states that a 24" (8" cordwood + 8" insulation + 8" cordwo od) doubl do uble e w all all has an R value value of 40+. 40+. Although this sounds like like double d ouble the w ork, it is not, as you only need to point the outside and most inside wall. www.daycreek.com
Wood types: Softw oods are best. C edar has a good R-v alue alue (1.5 per inch) and is natural naturally ly decay resistant. resistant. Hardwoods h ave a tendency to swell and crack crack mortar joints. The best softwoods: white cedar, white pine, cottonwood, poplar, red cedar, spruce or larch followed by b y hemlock and poplar. poplar. If all you have is hardwood, hardwo od, you yo u must must split split the w ood and let let it dry for only months months instead of years, otherw ise it wi ll expand expand in the w all. all.
For a 32' 32' x 36' one o ne story structu structure re - you yo u need approx 5 cords of cedar wo od.
