PREFACE The most challenging task before an astrologer is to correctly time an event. For this Sage Parasara has given over 40 dasa systems. Of these certain are applicable to all the horoscopes i.e. they are universal. Others are conditional. That is, they can be applied only if certain conditions can be fulfilled. The most important universal dasas are Vimshottari, Yogini and Kalachakra dasa. These three are also the most popular. Vimshottari dasa is the most popular and the best. When applied with Yogini and Kalchakra dasa and also annual chart nearly hundred percent correct results can be given. Besides universal dasas Sage Parasara has also given nine conditional dasas. Not much research had been done on these. I started working on these around five years back although for actual predictive work I have mostly relied on Vimshottari, Yogini, Kalachakra and the annual horoscope. These I have combined with Prasna and Swarauday techniques. I have usually cast conditional dasas only in difficult cases to be hundred percent sure about an event. My basic purpose for writing this book is to popularise their use so that more research can be done on these fascinating dasa systems. My endeavours will be rewarded if deeper insight is gained into their application. I hope that after the publication of this book more students of astrology will show interest in this little explored area. I would also like to reiterate that if any reader has any difficulty in understanding any portion of the subject matter of the book they can write to me and I will try to promptly despatch a reply to them. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sumeet Chugh has had his upbringing in true vedic traditions. He started learning astrology at the young age of 18 years and gained the true knowledge of Hindu or Vedic astrology under the able guidance of his guru Shri Lachhman Das Madan, editor of the astrological journal—'The Babaji'. He has, through his various books, unfolded various hidden secrets of Hindu astrology which have otherwise been passed from one generation to the next only in a Guru-Shishya Parampara. His earlier books have received wide appreciation both in India and abroad. He has also regularly contributed articles to various astrological journals in India. Sumeet Chugh, a Chartered Accountant by profession is employed as a top executive with a finance company. He took up astrology as a hobby and has used it selflessly for the benefit of mankind. CHAPTER 1 CONDITIONAL DASAS-MEANING AND IMPORTANCE The most challenging task for an astrologer is the timing of events. In Hindu or vedic astrology we have some unique dasa systems. The most important of these is Vimshottari Dasa. It is the most widely used dasa system and can help us time events very precisely. It is also a universal dasa which is applicable to all the horoscopes. Besides Vimshottari Sage Parasara is said to have discussed more than 40 other dasa systems. These may be planetary Dasas or sign Dasas. However the most important of these dasas are those based on Nakshatra occupied by Moon at birth. Therefore, these are also called Nakshatra Dasas. Amongst Nakshatra Dasas, three are most important. These are universal dasas and can be applied to any horoscope : (1) Vinishottari Dasa : This is the most widely used dasa system. Its accuracy is amazing. The readers of this book, of course, must be familiar with this Dasa System. Its modus operandi is discussed in Chapter 2. (2) Yogini Dasa : In this dasa system me complete cycle of 36 years divided between 8 Ybginis. These 8 Yogini, their rulers and the number of years allotted to them are : S.No.

This dasa is very popular among astrologers in hilly areas of North India. Very accurate predictions can be made by using this dasa-system. At a glance an astrologer can see the periods of prosperity and misfortune.

(3) Kalachakra Dasa System : Many classical writers have described this as emperor amongst all dasa systems. Many features such as Moon's Navamsa, Paramayus, Deha and Jeeva Rasi, Gatis or jumps etc. make this a very unique dasa system. Yogini and Kalachakra Dasa systems offer us an insight into a horoscope which even Vimshottari at times is not able to offer. Both these dasa systems are discussed in detail in my book 'YOGINI AND KALACHAKRA DASAS'. Conditional Dasas Besides the above Sage Parasara has also discussed certain conditional dasas. These are not universal dasas and are applicable to only those horoscopes which fulfill certain conditions. These conditional dasa systems are : (1) Dwisaptati Sama Dasa : The conditions for this dasa are that ascendant lord should be in the 7th house or the 7th lord is in the ascendant. The dasas are in the order of the week days i.e. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and lastly Rahu. Ketu has no place in this dasa system. Each dasa is of 9 years and total of one cycle of Dasa is of 72 years. Count from Moola to the birth star. Divide it by eight. Count remainder in order of week days starting fbom Sun to find dasa operating at birth. Remainder Zero will give the opening Dasa of Rahu. This dasa is discussed in detail in chapter 3. (2) Shastihayani Dasa : This dasa is to be used when Sun is posited in the ascendant. The total cycle is of 60 years. Start fbom Ashwini. First take three Nakshatras and then take four Nakshatras. There are two groups. Keep forming such groups. These groups give balance of Dasas of Jupiter (10 Years); Sun (10 Years); Mars (10 Years); Moon (6 Years); Mercury (6 Years); Venus (6 Years); Saturn (6 Years) and Rahu (6 Years). This system is discussed in detail in Chapter 11. (3) Shat-Trimshati Sama Dasa : This dasa is to be used when : (a) Birth is during the day time and ascendant falls in the bora of Sun. Or (b) Birth is during the night time and ascendant falls in the bora of Moon. In any of the above cases Shat-Trimshati Sama Dasa can be gainfully used. For calculating the balance of Dasa under this Dasa system count

from Shravana to JanmaNakshatra. Divide the figure by 8. If remainder is one the opening dasa will be of Moon, two as remainder-Sun, three-Jupiter, four-Mars, five-Mercury, six-Saturn, seven-Venus, and eight as remainder gives the opening dasa of Rahu. This dasa system is discussed in detail in Chapter 4. (4) Dwadashottari Dasa : This dasa is used for those nativities whose ascendant falls in Navamsa of Venus. That is, the Navamsa ascendant should be either Taurus or Libra. Count from Jamna Nakshatra to Revati. Divide the figure by 8. The remainder indicates the planet whose dasa operates at birth. One as remainder means Sun, two means Jupiter, three ketu, four Mercury, five Rahu, six Mars, seven Saturn and eight Moon. The readers will notice that Venus is not considered in this Dasa System. The dasa periods allocated to the planets are 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 years respectively. The total duration of one cycle of dwadashottari dasa is 112 years. This dasa system is discussed in Chapter 5. (5) Chaturashiti Sama Dasa : This dasa is to be applied to those nativities where 10th lord is placed in the 10th house. Count from Swati to Janma Nakshatra. Divide the figure by seven. One as remainders gives Sun, two Moon, three Mars, four Mercury, five Jupiter, six Venus and seven gives Saturn as opening dasa operating at birth. Each planet has a dasa period of twelve years. The total duration of one cycle of Chaturashiti Sama Dasa is 84 years. The readers will notice that the dasa periods are in the same order as week day lords. This dasa is discussed in Chapter 6. (6) Shatabdika Dasa : This dasa is to be applied to those nativities who have a Vargottama ascendant. That is, the Rasi-Cflart ascendant and the Navamsa ascendant are the same. Count the number of Nakshatras from Revati to Jamna Nakshatra and divide the figure by seven. The remainder gives the opening dasa at birth in the order of Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. The period allotted to these planets are 5, 5, 10, 10, 20, 20and 30 years respectively. The total duration of one cycle is 100 years. This dasa is discussed in Chapter 7. (7) Shadsottari Dasa : This dasa is to be applied to those nativities whose birth is in Krishna Paksha (i.e. Moon is waning) and ascendant is in the Hora of Moon or birth is in Shukla Paksha (i.e. Moon is waxing) and the ascendant falls in the Hora of Sun. Count from Pushya

to the Janma Nakshatra and divide the figure by 8. The remainder indicates planet whose dasa will operate at birth. One as remainder means Sun, two Mars, three Jupiter, four Saturn, five Ketu, six Moon, seven Mercury and eight Venus. The duration of planets is as follows : Sun 11 years. Mars 12 years, Jupiter 13 years, Saturn 14 years, Ketu 15 years. Moon 16 years. Mercury 17 years and Venus 18 years. The total dasa cycle is 116 years. This is discussed in Chapter 8. (8) Panchottari Dasa : This dasa is to be applied to those nativities who have Cancer ascendant and Dwadasamsa ascendant is also Cancer. This is a dasa which will only apply in a very rare case. That is ascendant of the native falls between Cancer 0° and Cancer 2o30'. I have rarely come across cases where this dasa becomes applicable. Count from Anuradha to birth (Janma) Nakshatra. Divide the figure by seven. The remainder indicates the dasa lord in the order ofSun, Mercry, Saturn, Mars, Venus, Moon and Jupiter. The dasa periods allocated to these planets are 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 15 years, 16 years, 17 years and 18 years respectively. Total dasa cycle is of 105 years. This is discussed in Chapter 9. (9) Ashtottari Dasa : Sage Parasara says if Rahu is not in the ascendant and is in an angle or trine to the ascendant lord, some learneds adopt Ashtottari Dasa. He further on states that: "If the birth is during day time during Krishna Paksha or if the birth is during the night time during Shukla Paksha, Ashtottari dasa should be applied". I am of the opinion that only under second condition should we apply Ashtottari dasa. Ashtottari dasa is calculated in a different manner than Vimshottari dasa. The method is similar to Shashtihayani Dasa. The total Dasa cycle is of 108 years. This dasa system has been discussed in Chapter 10.

CHAPTER 2 HOW TO JUDGE A NAKSHATRA DASA The basic thrust of this book is on timing events using different nakshatra dasas. I have discussed in this book nine nakshatra based conditional dasas. The rules for interpreting these are more or less the same as those for interpreting Vimshottari dasa. Vimshottari dasa is the most accurate of all the dasa systems. When applied with Yogini dasa, Kalachakara dasa and the annual chart nearly hundred percent correct predictions can be given. Conditional dasas are little explored dasa systems. I have tried them on and off over the last five or six years. My basic purpose for writing this book is to generate more interest in these dasa systems so that more research can be carried out on these dasa systems. In this chapter I am discussing the basics of Hindu astrology and also the rules for interpreting Vimshottari dasa. These rules can be applied to all the nine conditional dasas discussed in this book. BASICS OF HINDU ASTROLOGY According to sage Parasara, Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as the nine planets. These are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. The Hindu Sages divided the zodiac of 360 degrees into twelve signs of 30 degrees each. These twelve signs are ruled by seven planets from Sun to Saturn. The twelve signs and the planets ruling them are given below : Sign

Aspects All planets aspect the seventh sign from where they are posited. Besides Mars aspects 4th and 8th; Jupiter 5th and 9th and Saturn 3rd and 10th signs. TITHI : There are 30 Tithies. Fifteen in Krishna Paksha (Dark half) and fifteen in Shukla Paksha (Bright half). When after new Moon (Sun and Moon conjunction) day. Moon moves away from Sun towards opposition with Sun it is called Shukla Paksha. Exact opposition of 180 degrees of Sun and Moon is called Full Moon (Purnamasi) day. When after full Moon day. Tithi is a lunar day, therefore, see the degrees Moon has traversed from Sun and divide the figure by 12. Quotient plus one gives the Tithi. Take an example with Moon in Aquarius at 19 degrees and Sim in Scorpio at 5 degrees. Then the difference (3190-215°) is 104°. This divided by 12 gives 7 quotient and 8 as remainder. Therefore Tithi is 7+1 = 8th of Shukla Paksh (because Moon is ahead of Sun). Week days : Sunday is governed by Sun. Moon rules Monday. Mars ruled Tuesday, Mercury rules Wednesday, Jupiter ruled Thursday, Venus rules Friday, Saturn rules Saturday. As per Hindus a day begins at Sunrise and ends at Sunrise the next day. Thus the Hindu day does not change at midnight and changes only at Sunrise. From Sunrise to Sunset it is day time and birth during this time is day birth. From Sunset to Sunrise it is night time and birth during this time is night birth. The Planets, their Qualities, Elements and Nature. We are all aware that there are nine planets or graha recognised in Vedic astrology. These are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Like everything else in the universe, the planets also evolve from the 5 tatwas or the five elements. These are Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Ether. As per the Hindu Scriptures the element predominant in a planet is as follows : Earth Air Water Fire Ether

Human beings acquire the temperament of the most powerful planet at birth and also of planets influencing the ascendant. It is the influence of various tatwas or elements that determines the personality of a human being. These tatwas have great importance in vedic philosophy. I have discussed them at some length in my various books. Below I am describing the basic effect of these elements : When the ether element is powerful then the person is clever and creative. He is a good orator and will always acquire encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject that interests them. These natives make good diplomats, they are very intelligent, they like making huge plans and are generally successful at them. They are of a long stature and have a tendency of putting on weight after the age of 32 years. When fiery temperament is predominant then the native is confident, restless, proud and arrogant. He is of a very sharp intellect and fair complexion. When Sun and Mars are predominant, the native likes to be in a position of authority and are seldom happy at working below someone. Fiery temperament makes a person daring and adventurous. Their face and physique exhibit a glowing aura. When earthy temperament is predominant then the native is childlike. His enthusiasm is like that of a small kid and he is full of energy. He is fond of luxuries, comforts and is always happy. He is very learned. His communication skills are amazing. Such a native always has his nails, hair and teeth clean. His room and almirah are always clean. He is so well dressed as if right out of a fashion magazine. Earthy temperament makes one hardworking, persevering and gives single minded devotion. When watery element (Moon and Venus) gains predominance then the native likes socialising, is gregarious, can take burden of difficult jobs, are soft spoken, love art and music and have many friends. Their body is slender, have robust health, are very good looking and have a very intuitive brain. Airy element in predominance makes the native careless, absentminded, shabby and they remain dirty. Their power of comprehension is weak, they think too much and have tendency of getting depressed. They are sorrowful and indulge in self pity. They have a charitable disposition, but are short tempered, fond of travelling, have a lean physique and live more in the mental world than t ie physical.

The planets, also, have the following three qualities or gunas : (i) Satwic

Satwic quality is a good quality. He is a human being of higher intelligence, well respected and in search of truth. Rajas quality makes a native intelligent, hardworking and patient. He is clever, protects the weaker sechon and seek comfort and luxury by hardwork and truthfulness. Tamsic quality signifies greed, falsehood, laziness and stupidity. He is often a sadist seeking pleasure in the sufferings of human beings and signifies the decay of human beings. The Four Types of Human beings Depending upon the predominance of gunas or qualities. Sage Parasara has described four types of human beings : (i) I ttain (Excellent) : When Satwic qualities are predominant. (ii) Madhyam (Average) : When Rajasic qualities are predominant. (iii) Adhama (Despicable) : When Tamasic qualities are predominant. (iv) Udaseen (Neutral) : A mixture of all the qualities. Vedic astrologers first determine the type of a person a native is from his birth horoscope or from the horary horoscope and then on that basis determine his stature in life. This is a prerequisite for making predictions. More on Planets Sun : The Sun has a square body, is short statured and of broad shoulders. His temperament is bilious, he has strong bones and has scanty hair. He is of dark red form. His eyes are of reddish brown colour. He wears red coloured clothes. He is very courageous, proud and possesses massive arms. The Sun is the soul of Kala purush (time personified). He is very intelligent and represents father of the native. The Sun is the significator of copper and gold, father, patience, king and high government authorities, lead, brass, light, fire, travels

in forests and hilly areas, enthusiasm, bravery and valour. Moon : The Moon is mind. She is very windy and phlegmatic, has a round body and is very learned. She is fickle minded, is of sweet speech and is beautiful. Moon is friendly and gregarious. She likes to travel, is feminine and cold in nature. She is mild and timid and often submissive. The Moon signifies mind, mother, white colour, calm and composed nature, watery places, poets, white trees, silver, sweet substances, white silk cloth, acquatic creatures, brass, ornaments, tranquility and peace of mind, fruits and white flowers, pearls and tender objects. Mars : Mars is cruel and valourous, has blood red eyes, is fickleminded, charitable when well placed, has a thin waist and has a lean physique. He is reddish in colour. His form is that of a youth. His head is square. Mars is often ferocious and ruthless and single minded in pursuit of his purpose. His body is warm. The Mars signifies dark red colour, fire, bricks, wild animals, soldiers, generals and dictators, brothers, lands, anger, wars, thieves, bone marrow, energy, sins, injuries, weapons, enemies, courage, physical and mental strength, products produced from earth, kinsmen and pride. Mercury : Mercury has an attractive physique, power of speech or oration, sense of humour, is green coloured and talkative. It is fond of Inn and frolic and sports. It has deep reddish eyes. Mercury is very intelligent and learned and has a mixture of three humours. Mercury signifies green colour, blue stones, mathematics, speech, trade, knowledge, wisdom, wit and humour, children, eloquence, proficiency in ait and music, maternal uncle, truthfulness, amusement parks, cinema halls and such places, friends and diplomats. Jupiter : Jupiter is huge. He has a very large body, has honey coloured eyes and hair, is phlegmatic, elderly, intelligent and very knowledgable and learned. He is yellow in colour, of noble nature, well respected, generous and pure hearted. Jupiter signifies Vedas, legal matters, a gum or preceptor, wealth and finance, bankers, honour, respect, progeny, houses, wood, noble qualities, ministers, national treasuries and husbands in a female's horoscope. Venus : Venus is very beautiful, charming, joyful, has beautiful and attractive eyes. She has a very magnetic personality. Her hair is

curly, limbs well proportioned and charming, her speech is soft and pleasing. She seeks pleasure, is of feminine sex, very young and a watery planet. She is very passionate in nature. Venus rules spouse, sex, white colour, vehicles, new clothes, marriage, beauty, fine arts and music, songs, vitality, pearls, silver, ornaments, jewellery, perfume, dance, drama, comforts, luxuries and auspicious celebrations. Saturn : Saturn is the planet of sorrow. It is thin and long statured. It is lame, has coarse, rough hair, is dark coloured, and has deep eyes. It is dull and its nails, hair and appearance are dirty. It is of old age, cruel and never shows remorse over its evil deeds. It is very slow and likes to idle away its time. Saturn signifies sorrow, obstacles, hardships, evil nature, crafty and cunning nature, wickedness, servants, thieves, diseases, longevity, death, fear, loss of position, disgrace, poverty, misery, humiliation, sins, filth and dirt, debts, articles of iron, slavery, confinement and confrontation with people in authority. Rahu : Rahu resembles Saturn in stature. It is black coloured and tall. It is nervous and suffers from skin-diseases. It speaks false hood and is critical of people more learned than it. Rahu's body is like smoke blue, lives in forests and represents troubles. It is windy but intelligent. Rahu signifies paternal grandfather, snakes, cancer disease, violence, religious intolerance, riots, poison, betrayals and quarrels. It also represents confinement, theft and out castes. Ketu : Ketu is also an outcaste, but with deep knowledge of the occult. It has reddish eyes and a fierce look. Its speech is venomous, it is very cruel and has wounds over its body. It signifies knowledge, occult, tantra, salvation (Moksha), maternal grandfather, dogs, dacoity, murders, foreign languages, low and mean acts, accidents and harsh speech. Planets and Primary Ingredients : Sun governs bones, Moon rules over blood, Mars the marrow of the bone, Mercury the skin, Jupiter the fat, Venus the semen, and Saturn the muscles of the kala punish. Abode of Planets : Sim resides in temple, Moon in watery places, Mars in places of fire and ordinance factories, Mercury in places of pleasure and amusement parks; Jupiter in treasuries and banks, Venus in bed rooms and Saturn in filthy place.

Planetary periods : Sun rules over an Ayana or six months. Moon over a Muhurtha i.e. over 24 minutes, Mars over one day, Mercury over one season i.e. two months, Jupiter over one month, Venus over one paksha or a fortnight and Saturn over one year. The above information is very useful when timing an event from a horary chart. (7) Now, see which planet is in which house. For example the sixth house extends from Gemini 180-38' till Cancer 140-26'. Jupiter is in Cancer 11 o06'. Therefore, it is in the 6th house and not in the 7th house as seen in Rasi-Chart. Thus, in Chalit Chakra Jupiter moves to the 6th house and Sun and Venus to the 10th house. Rest of the planets are in the same house as in the Rasi-Chart. In Hindu or Vedic astrology the following should be studied : (i) Sign position as in Rasi-Chart. (ii) House position as in Chalit Chakra. The folowing points should be remembered concerning the Chalit Chakra : (1) The lord of a house is the lord of the sign where its bhavamadhya (House middle) falls, for instance, in our example case bhava madhya of the tenth house is Scorpio. Therefore, actual tenth lord is Mars (and not Venus as seen in Rasi-Chart). (2) The functional malefics and benefics for a nativity is always reckoned from the Rasi-chart. for example, for a saggitarius ascendant fifth and sixth house bhava madhya is in Taums. Here, Venus will not become a benefic by owning the 5th house. It remains a malefic for saggitarius nativity as it owns 6th and 11 th houses in the Rasi-Chart. This is the correct Hindu way. (3) In Hindu astrology Rasi-Chart has its own importance. But it is studied keeping house positions as per chalit chakra, in mind. Suppose two planets form a Raja Yoga in Raasi-Chart, but are not in combination in Chalit Chakra. This means that the native gets a Raja Yoga which soon falls apart. The 27 Nakshatras or Constellations In Hindu asrology great importance is attatched to the 27 Nakshatras. Nakshatra extends upto 13o20'. The nakshatra occupied by Mooon at birth is called the Janma Nakshatra. The 27 Nakshatras are given in Table 2.1. The table also gives the starting dasa lord at birth and number of years alloted to each planet as per vimshottari dasa. For method to calculate Vimshottari dasa readers can refer to any standard book on the subject. The 27 Nakshatras are divided into 9 groups of 3 Nakshatras each. These nine groups and the likely effect of a planet occupying them is given below. Here 1 stands for Janma Nakshatra, 2 for the

Here, Janma Nakshatra is Ashwini. Therefore, Ashwini, Magha and Moola (the three nakshatras ruled by Ketu under Vimshottaridasa system) become Janma Taras. Similary Ktittika, V. Phalguni and V. Marakas or Death inflicting planets Lords of 2nd and 7th are death inflicting planets. The planets in these signs are death inflicting. Lord of 12th if afflicted can also kill a native. Any house can collapse in the main or sub-period of its lord, if the lord is very weak and badly afflicted. The lord of ascendant (ruling self) or 8th (longivity) if very weak can cause native's death during their main or sub-periods. The planets which are in Vipta, Pratyak or Vadha Taras are also death inflicting. Besides these lord of 22nd drekkana and the weakest planet in a horoscope are harmful. Rahu and Ketu Rahu and Ketu when in Kendras or Trikonas (angle or trine) become a yogakaraka. If aspected or associated with other yogakarakas in these houses, they confer Rajayogas. Retrograde planets The following should be remembered in respect of retrograde planets : (i)

NaUiral benefics when retrograde, promote prosperity, success and happiness.

(ii)

Natural malefics when retrograde cause obstacles, tension and failures.

(hi)

The house in which a retrograde planet is posited suffers.

(iv)

A retrograde planet with Sun causes confrontahon with higher authorities during its dasa period.

Combustion A planet very close to sun get combust. I have usually found effect of combustion lasting till only 10 degrees. A planet within 4 degrees of Sun, is said to be in deep combustion and gives extremely adverse results during its dasa period. Rasi-Sandhi A planet in first degree (Oo00' to 0o59') or the 30th degree (29 0r to 30°) of a sign is powerless. o

Results of Main and Sub-periods The planets give malefic and benefic results depending upon whether they are weak or strong. If they are under mixed influences then the native will experience mixed results. Accordingly, a house will suffer annhilation under certain conditions and will prosper under certain condition. These are discussed below. Prosperity of a House : A house prospers under the following conditions : (1) The lord of the house is exalted in Rasi or Navamsa charts. If the exalted planet is posited in the 6th, 8th or the 12th house it becomes weak. If a debilitated planet is exalted in the navamsa it gives good effects. (2) A planet in own house in Rasi-Chart or Navamsa-Chart gives good results. (3) A planet in Kendra, trikona (angle or trine) gives good results. That is, the houses owned by it prosper. (4) A planet in 11th house gives good results and the houses owned by it prosper. A planet in the 2nd house is good if in friendly sign or otherwise well placed. (5) A house will prosper if its lord is Vargottama. That is, it is in the same sign in Rasi-Chart and Navamsa. This rale is applicable while judging other divisional charts also. There are two exceptions to this rale : (i) If the vargottama planet is in sign of debilitation it gives adverse effects. (ii) A planet in Rasi-Sandhi i.e. in the first degree (0° to 0o59') or the 30th degree (29o0r to 30°) of a sign. For example, if a planet's longitude is virgo 29o50', then it will give adverse results even though vargottama.

(6) If a house or its lord are aspected by benefics, the house prospers. (7) If a house or its lord is hemmed between benefics. (8) The house whose lord is in the Sampat Tara, Ksliema Tara, Sadhaka Tara or the Parama Mitra Tara prospers. The planet concerned should not be in 6th, 8th or 12th house, debilitated or combust. (9) A house occupied by a planet which is both natural and functional benefic prospers. Anhilation of a house : Under the following conditions a house suffers : (1) If a house or its lord is hemmed between malefics then the concerned house suffers. (2) If the lord of the house is debilitated in the Rasi or Navamsa chart. (3) If the lord of the house is afflicted by malefics. (4) If the lord of the house is in 6th, 8th or 12th house. (5) If the house is occupied by a retrograde planet which is natural malefic or a by a functional malefic. (6) If the lord of the house is combust. (7) If the dispositor of a planet is very weak, then the concerned planet becomes weak and the houses owned by it suffer. (8) A planet in Rasi-Sandhi becomes weak. (9) A planet in Vipat Tara, Pratyak Tara or Vadha Tara gives adverse results. (10) If a planet is in combination (any of the four types) with badhak lord, there are obstacles concerning the houses owned by the planet (11) If a house is occupied by the 2nd Drekkana or badhaka lord there is distress due to relations represented by the concerned house. For example, if 22nd Drekkana is in the 7th house then the spouse may face adversities. If the badhak lord is in the 7th house, there will be obstacles concerning the married life of the native. In the above manner good and bad results should be declared. The readers should remember the following points : (i) If there are both good and bad influences on a house, then

mixed results should be declared. (ii) If the sub-period lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the major period lord then there are difficulties. If the subperiod lord is well placed, then the native will overcome these adversities. (in) The strong and weak results of a planet should be assessed both in natal horoscope and in transit. Suppose dasa is of Mars and Mars goes into debilitation in transit (i.e. transits the sign cancer) it will give adverse results. (in) If during transit Jupiter aspects or transits over major period or sub-period lord favourable results should be declared. Under similar cicrumstances Saturn gives adverse results. Major Dasa of Planets The likely affects of planets during their dasa periods is described below : These results get modified according to their lordships, combinations and aspects received by them. These effects are also felt in the sub period of these planets. Sun : If Sun is well placed at birth there is financial prosperity, career betterment and favours from government, pleasant journeys and happiness. If Sun is weak and afflicted there will be adversities, difficulty with seniors and governments, exile, defamation, distress to father, quarrels and disputes with associates. There can be loss pf property and loss due to fire. Moon : If Moon is well placed there will be happiness, success in all endeavours, fame and recognition, enoyable relationships and prosperity. There will be spitirual advancement. The native will experience opulence, acquire important assets and will lead a conetended life.

If Moon is weak and aflicted there will be loss of wealth, extreme mental anxiety, trouble from juniors, legal hassles and death of a close relative. Mars : If Mars is strong and well placed then during its period the native will attain a high position, acquire valuable assets, will gain from foreign sources and have happiness through coboms and become famous. The native is recognised for his courage and valour, there is victory in disputes and court cases and over all enemies. If Mars is weak and afflicted there will be blood disorders, paralysis, injury, surgery, loss of wealth, loss of position and reputation. There can be high fever and bilious complaints. Ketu : If Ketu is well placed in a Kendra, Trikona or the 11th house in exaltation, friendly or own sign the native will win the confidence of his seniors and gain much from them. There will be acquisition of valuable assets. The native will gain from foreign countries and foreigners. If Ketu is afflicted, weak and in 2nd, 8th or 12th house or is aspected by malefics, there will be loss of wealth, health problems and anxieties. The native will become agitated over trival matters and will also have high blood pressure. He will be much troubled by enemies. Venus : If Venus is strong and well placed the native will enjoy company of the opposite sex, may get married happily and have children. He acquires articles of luxury, conveyances and leads a happy and contended life. If Venus is weak and afflicted the native will remain emotionally disturbed, there will be break in relationships, will have weak constitution, betrayals, dishonour due to sex scandals and will experience much mental agony. The Nakshatra Lordship While analysing conditinal dasas I have frequently used the concept of Nakshatra lordships. There is a great deal of confusion over this matter and the readers are advised to go through the subtle point I am trying to clarify very carefully. What are considered to be Nakshatra lords are actually dasa lords and not Nakshatra lord. Ketu does not own Ashwini. It is the dasa lord of Ashwini under the Vimshottari dasa system. In Dwadasottari dasa system also Ashwini's dasa lord is Ketu. But under Pahchottari dasa system the dasa lord of Ashwini is Venus. If a planet say 'A' is situated in Aries in Ashwini Nakshatra it wil also give results of Ketu during its dasa if we are seeing Vimshottari dasa. But if we are studying Panchottari dasa the planet 'A' during its dasa period will also give the results of planet Venus.

Now suppose Venus is extremely weak. But planet 'A' does not become weak just because its Nakshatra dispositior under Panchottari dasa system is weak. It will only give the effects of Venus also. Tills is because these are only dasa lords and not Nakshatra lords. 1 hope the readers have understood the subtle point 1 have tried to explain above. Note : Hie results a planet will give of its Nakshatra dispositorships is only secondary to the results it gives due to its own position. DIVISIONAL CHARTS One of the secrets for correct interpretation of a horoscope is to correctly cast and study a divisional chart. While studying a divisional chart the following points should be remembered : (1) Divisional charts should always be studed along with the main chart and never alone. Some astrological upstarts take a divisional chart alone and get confused. It is only a part of the main chart. (2) See the ascendant of a divisional chart and the concerned house in it. Also the lord of the concerned house in the main chart and planets posited therein should be examined in a divisional chart. (3) A planet extremely weak, afflicted and combust in a main chart but well placed in a divisional chart Ca..r.ot 6Nc gccd (4) Study combinations, houses, aspects etc. in a divisional chart. But never forget to see aspects, combinations etc. formed by the planet in the main chart. Points to be remembered The readers should keep in mind the following points while interpreting a nakshatra dasa : (1) If a planet is in first Drekkana its results are experienced in the first part, if in second drekkana they are felt in the second part of the dasa and if in the third Drekkana the results are felt during the last part of the dasa. As Raliu and Ketu are always retrograde their results will be experienced in the reverse order. (2) If major period lord or sub period lord in transit gets weak due to combustion, debilitation etc. adverse results should be stated. If they get strength in transit by being in own house or exaltation favourable results are experienced. (3) If Jupiter or Sun transits over exaltation sign of the sub

period lord favourable results should be foretold. If they transit over the debilitation sign of the sub period lord then adverse results should be predicted. (4) If Jupiter in transit aspects the natal positiion of the subperiod lord it proves auspicious. (5) Transit of Saturn or Mars over natal position of the subperiod lord or their aspect on the sub period lord proves unfortunate. (6) If the sub period lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the main period lord it gives obstacles. (7) If a planet which is very weak in the natal chart, (be combust, debilitated or be in inimical sign) and its dasa is in progress then it destroys the significations of the house it transits. (8) If Raliu or Ketu occupy a Kendra or Trikona and are connected with lord of a Kendra or Trikona then they become Yogakarakas. (9) If a planet is posited in 6th, 8th, or 12th house it gives adverse results. But lord of 6th house in 6, 8 or 12 gives a Sarala Yoga. This makes a native prosperous and longlived. Lord of the 12th house in 6, 8 or 12 gives Vimala Yoga. This helps the native in accumulating wealth. (10) Lords of Kendra and Trikona when in any of the four types of combinations with each other give a Raja Yoga. (11) Lords of second and eleventh house in combination with each other or a Kendra or Trikona lord give a dhana yoga. Case-History : The native first lost his job around mid-1991 and then had health crisis in shape of rupture of blood vessels. It was during the major period of Saturn and sub period of Venus. Analysis : The native lost his job during Saturn-Venus period. Saturn is a functional malefic placed in the third house. Its dispositor Mercury is debilitated. The sub period was of Venus. This example further confirms that the main horoscope should never be ignored while studying a divisional chart. The native also had health problems during this period. Fourth house rules movement of blood. It lord Venus as already seen is weak and afflicted. Fourth is occupied by significators of blood Moon and Mars. In transit Saturn from Capricorn was afflicting them and also the 4th lord Venus through its tenth and third aspect respectively.

Interpretation of Dasa results In Chapter 2, we have already discussed in detail the rales for interpreting Nakshatra dasas. Now let us employ these rules to Illustration 1 to see the validity of Dwisaptah sama Dasa system. Case-History : The native an army officer, met with an accident on January 19, 1991 and was consequently invalided out of service on June 7, 1992. Vimshottari Dasa : The native met with an accident during the major period of Rahu and the sub period of Venus. Rahu is in the twelfth house. It is aspected by malefic Mars. The sub-period was of Venus placed in debilitation sign in the fourth house. The native lost his job during the major of Rahu and the sub period of Sun. Sun in the third house is afflicted by Saturn and is debilitated in Navamsa. Such an affliction to Sun causes loss of position. Conditional Dasas of Sage Parasara Case-History : The native died at the age of 16 years. Analysis : Vimshottari Dasa :

The native died during the major period and sub-period of Jupiter the 3rd and 12th lord. The basic defect in this horoscope is the degree conjunction of 8th lord Sun with its eternal enemy Ketu. This combination is afflicted by Saturn. Jupiter the 3rd and 8th lord is also very close to this combination and it was during its major and subperiod that the native passed away. Dwisaptati Sama Dasa : In this horoscope ascendant lord Saturn is in the seventh house. Therefore, we can apply the Dwisaptati Sama Dasa. The Janma Nakshatra is Ardra. The distance yet to be traversed by Moon in Ardra is : (2-20-00H2-09-04) = l0o-56'. Therefore, balance of Saturn dasa is : lO^' x 9 years ism . 636 x 9 years 800 = 7Y-4M-17D. The native died during the major period of Rahu and the subperiod Saturn. Rahu represents Ketu also, which is in degree conjunction with 8th lord Sun. This Causes a strong Alpa Ayu Yoga (short life). For more details on calculating life span the readers can refer to my book on 'Longevity'. The sub-period was of Saturn which is placed in a maraksthana. Saturn also afflicts the degree combinahon of Sun and Ketu. If we look at the Nakshatra positions, Rahu under Dwisaptati Sama Dasa will be in own Nakshatra. Rahu represents Ketu also as Ketu has no period under this dasa system. Saturn is in the Nakshatra of Sun as per' this system. Therefore, as per Nakshatra lordships (under Dwisaptati Sama dasa) focus on Rahu/Ketu and Sun. It is their degree conjunction which restricted native's life span. Thus, we see that the event is more clear from the conditional dasa i.e. Dwisaptati Sama Dasa.

Note : (1) This dasa is very similar to Yogini Dasa. The dasa lords are the in the same order as the lords of the Yogini. The basic difference in interpreting these dasas is that each Yogini like Pingala, Bhramari, Dhanaya carries a deeper estoric meaning. Yogini dasa is universal, unlike Shat-Trimsha Sama Dasa which is a conditional dasa. (2) Ketu does not get any period in this Dasa system and its results are felt through its dispositor and through Rahu. In the above manner we can calculate the future major periods also. The sub-periods can also be calculated in the usual manner, with the help of Table 4.2. Interpreting Shat-Trimsha Sama Dasa The basic rules for jugding the conditional dasas is the same as those employed for Vimshottari dasa. Case-History : The native of Illustration 1 got married during the Vimshottari dasa major period of Sun and the sub-period of Mars. As per shat-Trimsha Sama dasa the major period was of Venus and the sub period was of Mars. Analysis : We notice that the sub-period'in both the dasa systems was of Mars. Mars is the Yogakaraka and exalted in the seventh house. No doubt, the native got married during its period. As per Vimshottari the major period was of 2nd (family) lord Sun posited with 7th lord Saturn. As per Shat-Trimsha Sama dasa the major period was of Venus, the natural significator of marriage. If we look at Nakshatra positions the major period under ShatTrimsha Sama dasa was of Venus which is in Anuradha which is ruled by Venus under this dasa system. Therefore, it is very powerful to give marriage. The major period as per Vimshottari was of Sun placed in Swati ruled by Ralm under vimshottari dasa system. Ralm is not directly connected with marriage in any way. But Sun as already seen is qualified to give marriage. Mars is in Shravana whose dasa lord as per both the systems is Moon. Moon is with Venus and can always give marriage. But it is basically the strong position of Mars in the seventh house which brought about the event during its sub-period in both the dasa systems. Case-History : The native was assassinated in November, 1963 during the Vimshottari dasa major period of Jupiter and the subperiod of Ketu. As per Shat Trimsha Sama Dasa the major period of Mars and the sub-period ofRahu. Analysis : As per Vimshottari dasa the major period was of Jupiter a maraka (seventh lord) and also lord of the 22nd Drekkana. As per ShatTrimsha Sama the major period was of Mars, lord of the 3rd and 8th which afflicts very closely the ascendant lord Mercury. This explains the assassination. Mars and Mercury are in the 8th house and in the 22nd Drekkana. The third drekkana of Aries in which the 22nd Drekkana falls is ruled by Jupiter and is called Ayudha Drekkana. This causes violent death specially if occupied by Mars as in our present case study. The point which readers should note that in both the dasa systems the focus is on the 22nd drekkana. Let us study some life events of the native : Event 1 : Father of the native passed away on Febraary 6. 1976 The Sun is afflicted by Saturn and Mars. Ninth lord is with Ketu while ninth house is hemmed between maiefics. In Dwadasamsa Chart, the ascendant lord Mars is debilitated in the ninth house. These factors show early loss of father. Vimshottari : Major period was of Jupiter which is lord of the seventh house from the 9th house and 2nd house from the Sun. It is also a maraka (2nd lord) in the Dwadasamsa Chart Sub-period was of Venus which is 7th lord from Sun and second lord from the 9th house. Shat Trimsa Sama Dasa : The father of the native died during the major period of ninth lord Mercury which is afflicted in the second from the ninth house. Interpreting Dwadashottari Dasa Let us now discuss few events in the life of above nativity to see the validity of Dwadashottari Dasa system. Case-History : The native, an army officer, met with an accident on January 19, 1991 and was consequently invalidated out of service on June 7, 1992. Vimshottari Dasa : The native met with an accident during the major period of Rahu and the sub-period of Venus. Rahu is in the twelfth house. It is aspected by malefic Mars. The sub-period was of Venus placed in debilitation in the fourth house.

The native lost his job during the major period of Rahu and the sub period of Sun. Sun is posited in the third house and is debilitated in Navamsa. Sun if afflicted by Saturn and weak always causes loss of position. Dwadashottari Dasa The native was under the major period of Saturn which afflicts the weak Sun. The sub-period was of Mars when both the adverse events took place. The Mars is in the house of debilitated Venus. It afflicts Moon in the 8th house causing much mental agony to the native. As per Dwadashottari Dasa system the dasa lord of Nakshatra occupied by major period lord Saturn is Moon. Moon is in the 8th house and afflicted by Mars. The dasa lord of Nakshatra occupied by sub-period lord Mars is Rahu. Rahu is in the twelfth house of losses afflicted by Mars. The next major period which started from November, 1992 is of Moon which cannot give much relief to the native being afflicted in the 8th house. Important point to be remembered Venus does not have a period allocated under this system, it gives its results through its dispositor and the planets occupying its houses. In the above example the sub-period lord Mars is in the house of Venus. Its Nakshatra dispositor Rahu is also in the sign owned by Venus. Thus the native felt all the adverse affects of debilitated Venus during the sub period of Mars.

The native had the accident when she was running the major period of Mars and the sub-period of Mercury under the Dwadashottari dasa system. Mercury is the 8th lord. The readers will notice that under Vimshottari dasa system the sub-period was of Moon which shifts to 8th house in Chalit Chakra. Therefore, in both the systems the focus was on the eighth house. Also the following should be remembered : (1) Mars and Mercury are both in the eighth house from the Moon Sign. (2) Mars and Mercury are in Taurus, a sign ruled by Venus. Thus the native was under the major period of Jupiter and the sub period of Mars during November, 1991. Interpreting Shadsottari Dasa Shadsottari dasa is to be interpreted in the same manner as the other Nakshatra dasas. Rahu does not have any major period in the dasa system. It gives its results through its sign and Nakshatra dispositor. Let us now see two major events in the life of the native to study the validity of Shadsottari dasa system. Event 1 : The native lost his father on February 6, 1976. As per Shadsottari dasa the native was under the major period of Mars and the sub period of Venus, when he lost his father. Major period lord Mars afflicts Sun-the significator of father. It is lord of the Dwadasamsa ascendant and is debilitated in the 9th house. Sage Parasara says that some scholars are of

the view that Ashtottari dasa is to be applied when : "Rahu not being in ascendant, is in any other Kendra (angle) or trikona (trine) to the lord of the ascendant (lagnesh)." But sage Parasara himself seems to favour only the condition discussed in this book, i.e. "When it is day birth in Krishna Paksha or night birth in Shukla Paksha." Sage Mansagar in his excellent treatise 'Mansagari Paddhati' is of the following opinion : "If birth is in Shukla Paksha then Ashtottari dasa should be used and if in Krishna Paksha then Vimshottari dasa should be used." But experience has shown that Vimshottari dasa is universal and can be applied to any horoscope. The correct condition for Ashtottari dasa is the one which is given in the beginning of this chapter. This can be seen after applying Ashtottari dasa to any number of horoscopes. Calculation of Balance of Dasa Calculation of balance of Ashtottari dasa is done in a different manner than Vimshottari dasa. In this system Nakshatras Ardra to Aslesha (6 to 9) are ruled by Sun.
