The Pitfalls of Collecting Willard’s Patent Timepiece or “Banjo Clock” An illustrated lecture by Robert C. Cheney, Director of Clocks, Watches & Scientific Instruments

Friday, May 2, 2014 Wine Reception 5-6:30PM; Lecture to follow 274 Cedar Hill Street, Marlborough, MA Simon Willard was granted a patent for his timepiece in 1802. Commonly called a “banjo” clock, it is today perhaps the most difficult American clock to find in original condition. Correctly evaluating a patent timepiece requires a working knowledge in many aspects of the decorative arts: furniture, painting on iron or the reverse of a glass, carving, gilding, brass hardware, and the mechanical elements. This lecture will open the faker’s handbook and pass on a few secrets to fully understand the form. Robert C. Cheney is a third generation clock maker who cleaned his first Willard timepiece under his father’s watchful eye at age seven. Drawing on over one hundred years of Cheney timepiece experience, he has written and lectured on this subject for over thirty-five years.
