FOR QUESTIONS 22 TO 26, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. BERRIES FOR GOPAL
Gopal paused to take in the smell and scene around him as he walked down the street. He often took this route after school, but did not remember seeing the creepers that covered the bushes near the road. He supposed they might have always been there, but the recent rains had probably made them bigger and healthier for they had grown larger and longer. Now, the creepers seemed to cover everything and bunches of dark berries could be seen among the deep green leaves. The berries looked delicious, small and red though some were larger and yellowish. Gopal watched the creepers spread and grow everyday on his way to and back from school and finally one day he decided to taste the abundant tiny fruit. However, first he wanted to be sure they were edible and took some home to his grandmother who said they were a kind of gooseberry. Later that day, Gopal checked on the internet to correctly identify the plant. He found that there were whole pages dedicated to edible wild fruits and plants, as well as imposter plants that looked similar but were actually bad for you.

FOR QUESTIONS 23 TO 27, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Tina of Tecmac Most of the robots in the Tecmac exhibition in Bangalore can talk, climb stairs or pick up objects but Tina, the little girl robot, doesn’t do any of these things. She is designed to look lovable. Tina is one of a new generation of robots and their designers don’t want them to seem threatening to human beings. Many technological problems need to be resolved before people start buying robots for their homes, and scientists also realise that there are deep psychological issues involved. ‘The concept of Bio Imaging robotics is that robots can co-exist with humans’, says VC Ravi Chandran, the designer of Tina, the robot ‘friend’ and Rama, a singing, dancing machine and one of the most impressive robots at the show.
Another is Microman’s new robot called Moman and the company hopes it will one day be able to do household tasks. Japan is already home to half of the world’s industrial robots and 90% of robot pets. ‘I don’t think we feel uncomfortable with robots and we also love technology’, said Kazuo Hirai of Honda. The robots that appeal most to humans at the moment, however, are those that don’t have a human form. Paro, a furry creature a bit like a seal, is used in children’s hospitals all over the world because the pleasant sensation of holding him helps the children recover more quickly. Not all robots are designed to be appealing however. For example, there’s the robot guard dog Mata 2. He has a camera and a mobile phone and can be guided by voice commands so that if you are away on a holiday, you can phone him and tell him what to do.

READING FOR 20 TO 26, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.
They can grow to a length of about 12.5 feet (3.8 m) and height at shoulders, up to 6 feet (1.8 m). The prominent horn for which these rhinos are so well-known has also been their downfall. Many animals have been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is revered for medicinal use in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The horn is also valued in North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental dagger handle. There are only about 2,000 Indian rhinos left in the wild. They are an endangered species.
Indian Rhinoceros The Indian rhinoceros lives primarily in northern India and Nepal. These massive beasts have some noticeable physical differences from their African relatives. Their segmented hide looks like a formidable coat of natural body armor. It functions a bit like one also: Flexible skin between the thicker hide "plates" allows them to shift as the rhinoceros moves. As their Latin name Rhinoceros unicornis suggests, Indian rhinos have only one horn. Like other rhinos, these animals have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind on the landscape. An Indian rhino can move very quickly when aroused. Their charges have been clocked at 30 miles (48 kilometers) an hour. They can weigh up to 2000 kg. Despite their bulk, they are nimble and can jump or change direction quickly. The Indian rhino is a grazer that travels established, tunnel-like paths through its tall grass habitat. It grasps tall grasses with its prehensile (gripping) lip. In addition to grass, rhinos eat fruit, leaves, and sometimes farm crops. They are often around water and sometimes consume aquatic plants. These herbivorous mammals and their average life span in the wild is about 40 years. These animals forage in the cooler temperatures of morning and afternoon to avoid exerting themselves in the unbearable mid-day heat. When the sun is high, they often wallow or submerge themselves in water.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 19 to 26, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. SAVING THE TIGER India’s national animal, the tiger, remains under severe threat. More than a year after the disappearance of the tigers from Sariska became public, the lord of the jungle has vanished from 50% of its historical habitats in Bihar and Rajasthan. This report on the Tiger tragedy was provided by Wildlife Institute of India (WII). Even in the Shivalik, the tigers have vanished from 30% of their areas. This threat to the tiger arises both from poaching, as well as loss of habitat and prey species. The tiger is a species most endangered by illegal International trade. The World Wide Fund for Nature has released its list of the world’s ten most in-demand species which are bought, sold, smuggled, killed or captured for trade purposes. The list includes tiger, Asian rhino, elephant, sawfish, porbeagle shark, spiny dogfish and European eel. A surge in rhino poaching over the last few years is also taking its toll on their population, while rampant ivory sales in Asia and Africa pose a threat to elephants. The only positive story to emerge was that of the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve in India, where tiger population has been found at a healthy 112 in just 500 square kilometres. While, the Jim Corbett remains safe, elsewhere, the situation looks dismal. 19. The other word used for ‘tiger’ in the passage is . A. endangered B. lord of the jungle C. an animal D. Jim Corbett
