READING FOR QUESTIONS 13 TO 16, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. My name is Keshav great to see animals see cows or horses, crocodiles or deer. I animals.
and when I was young I always liked visiting zoos. It was that didn’t live around my house. Around my house I could but not zebras or lions. I could see dogs and pigs, but not loved spending my weekends at the zoo learning about the
One day I learned there was an animal shelter near my uncle’s house. It wasn’t a regular shelter. The ones I’d been to before were places where you could adopt dogs, cats and sometimes even a pot-bellied pig or goat. This place had lions, tigers and bears, so I was really keen to go there immediately. As I arrived, I was surprised because I heard the lions from the parking lot. The place was small, but nicely kept. It was clean and the volunteers working at the entry were very helpful. My family and I toured the place at our own pace, examining the cages and habitats the animals lived in. I was immediately struck by the differences between this place and a normal zoo. Zoos usually have beautiful habitats set up for each animal, but you can’t get near the animals at all. At this shelter, I was almost close enough to reach out and touch the animals, even though there were two fences between the animals and I. There weren’t as many people, either, so it seemed like a more personal experience. The paths were narrow and covered with trees that made the animals feel more at home and provided them shade. It was interesting to stare a lion in the eyes when you could almost reach out and touch it. It was fun to watch the bears pace back and forth and wiggle their lips at you with great expressions. They were silly creatures. There were leopards lazing in the midday heat and monkeys grooming themselves. The best part about the place was the stories. The animals had a story posted up on the sides of their cages. Each had been rescued from abuse or taken when they were no longer wanted. These were sad stories with a happy ending. Someone at this shelter had worked hard to take care of the animals, and now I could enjoy meeting them and learn from them. When it was nally time to go, we all thanked the volunteers and made a donation of 500 rupees. Shelters always need money, food for the animals and help. It made us feel good to help out any way we could for the care of the animals. It was a great place, and I couldn’t wait to return to it.
13. What is different about this animal shelter compared to the other ones Keshav had seen? A. It has wild animals. B. This one is very far away. C. This one has only injured animals.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 15 TO 21, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Popcorn, also known as popping corn, is a special variety of corn (Zea mays everta). Each kernel, in other words corn seed, contains a tiny drop of water. When it is heated, the water expands causing the seed to explode and ip inside out. In the US popcorn is mostly grown in Nebraska, Indiana and now increasingly in Texas. Native Americans rst discovered popcorn thousands of years ago in Mexico. It was popped in China during the Song Dynasty as well as in Sumatra and India long before Columbus reached America. In 1948 and 1950, anthropologist Herbert Dick and botanist Earle Smith discovered ears of popcorn in Mexico. The size varied from a few millimeters to about two inches and was carbon dated to be about 5,600 years old. Hernando Cortes invaded Mexico in 1519 and rst saw popcorn when he met the Aztecs. Aztecs used popcorn as food and decoration on headdresses, necklaces and ornaments. Around 1612, French explorers around the Great Lakes met Iroquois who used heated sand in a pottery vessel to make popcorn. Colonial housewives served popcorn with sugar and cream for breakfast. Some colonists used a cylinder of thin sheet-iron that revolved on an axle in front of the replace to make popped corn. In 1885, Charles Cretors of Chicago, Illino is, invented the rst popcorn machine. Street vendors were soon pushing steam or gas-powered poppers through fairs, parks, and expositions. Today much of the popcorn you buy at movies and fairs is popped in machines manufactured by the Cretors family. Americans eat more than 33 billion kilograms of popcorn a year, an average of 30 kilograms per person per year. READING FOR QUESTIONS 14 TO 20, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. OSTRICH
The ightless ostrich is the world’s largest bird. They roam in the African savanna and desert lands, and get most of their water from the plants they eat. Though they cannot y, ostriches are strong runners. They can run up to 43 miles (70 kilometers) an hour. They may use their wings as “rudders” to help them change direction, while running. An ostrich’s powerful, long legs can cover 10 to 16 feet (3 to 5 meters) in a single stride. These legs can also be dreadful weapons. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or other carnivorous animals. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw.
Ostriches live in small herds that typically contain less than a dozen birds. All the hens of a herd place their eggs in one nest, each one of which weighs as much as two dozen chicken eggs. The hen and the male, both take turns looking after the giant eggs. Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. The old saying probably originates due to the bird’s defensive behaviour.
5th IEO - SET A
3
At the approach of trouble, ostriches will lie low and press their long necks to the ground in an attempt to become less visible. READING FOR QUESTIONS 14 TO 20, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. MONGOOSE
Mongooses are primarily found in Africa. They cover most of the continent. Some species occupy parts of southern Asia and the Iberian Peninsula. They are generally terrestrial mammals, but some are semi-aquatic, and others are at home in the treetops. Ranging in size from the 7-inch-long (18-centimetre-long) dwarf mongoose to the 2-foot-long (60-centimetre-long) Egyptian mongoose; these sleek mammals have long bodies with short legs and long snouts. They normally have brown or grey fur, and a number of species have striped coats or ringed tails. Mongooses live in burrows and are predators, feeding on small animals such as rodents, birds, reptiles, frogs, insects and worms. Some species supplement their diet with fruits, nuts and seeds. Creative hunters, mongooses are known to break open the birds’ eggs by throwing them with their paws toward a hard object. Famously, some species of mongoose will boldly attack venomous snakes such as cobras. The most celebrated of these is Rudyard Kipling’s ctional Rikki-tikki-tavi, based on an ancient fable and included in The Jungle Book . In the 1800s, mongooses were introduced to several islands in Hawaii and the West Indies in order to control the rodent populations on sugarcane plantations. Today, this effort has come back to haunt these islands as mongooses threaten the survival of various native species, particularly birds. However, in their natural environments mongooses are currently threatened themselves due to habitat loss. 14. The Egyptian mongoose is A.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 13 TO 19, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. I saw the old lion rst on 30 th June. It looked quite weak as it walked feebly to the pond. On 2nd July, around 4 pm I spotted it again – this time the lion was near the porcupine group, I was following. I focussed my binoculars on it and stayed in my jeep to watch. The lion must have been too old to chase other animals – it must have been unbearably hungry because just after sunset it attacked a porcupine! At rst it kept circling around the porcupine. Then it tried to claw it. As the lion brought its face closer, the porcupine turned around and charged into its face. A number of quills pierced the lion’s face. The lion growled in deep pain and left the place slowly. Four days passed, early evening, I found the lion dead. When I helped the forest department’s veterinary doctor perform the postmortem, I noticed that one of the sharp quills had penetrated so deep that it had reached the lion’s brain! I had heard that a porcupine’s quill can travel a distance of over 2.5 centimetres every day, but this was the rst time I saw a rst-hand instance. When a porcupine shoots a quill, it lodges itself deep in the body, causing deep wound. As the muscles around the wound contract, they push the quill deeper and deeper till it reaches the bones or some vital organs like heart, lungs, kidneys or brain! This way, a vital organ is punctured and the foolish predator dies. 13. The passage reads like a ___________. A.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 18 TO 21, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Nobody knew kangaroos existed until about 200 years ago. Australian explorers and settlers saw them then for the first time. The kangaroo, of course, has a pouch, and in Australia, many mammals have pouches. Australia and its neighbouring islands are where most of the pouched animals are found. Pouched mammals are called ‘the marsupials’. The name comes from the Latin word ‘marsupium’, which means pouch. The first mammals appeared more than 100,000,000 years ago during the Age of Dinosaurs. Some of these were marsupials, and some were placentals. A placental mammal supplies food to the unborn young within the mother’s body. In marsupial mammals, the pouch serves this purpose. The young ones are born very tiny and develop in the mother’s pouch. When the earth’s climate changed, the dinosaurs died out. The mammals multiplied and developed in many ways. They became the ruling animals of the earth. The placental mammals were more successful than the marsupials. Their brains were superior, and it was better for the young to develop inside the mother’s body than in the pouch. In most parts of the world, marsupials have disappeared. They could not compete for living places with other mammals. However, this did not happen in Australia and South America. Scientists believe that Australia was once linked to South-Eastern Asia. So all marsupials moved to Australia at a time when there were no advanced placental mammals there. They did not have any competition, so they evolved and flourished in many forms. Example When did we know about kangaroos’ existence? A.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 18 TO 22, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Every winter, hundreds of humpback whales migrate long distances from their high latitude feeding grounds in the Arctic and Antarctic to warmer tropical regions to breed and give birth. The newborn calves, which drink over 52 gallons of milk every day, have only a few months to gain the body fat needed to keep swimming back to cooler waters in summer. How the babies signal hunger and avoid predators during these early months has always been a mystery to scientists. “We know next to nothing about the early life stages of whales in the wild, but they are important for the calves’ survival during the long migration to their feeding grounds,” says study lead author Simone Videsen of the University of Aarhus, Denmark. “These early life stages of wild whales are so confusing because they’re an aquatic animal. We can’t follow them around all the time to see what they’re doing.” Studies revealed that instead of crying loudly like their human counterparts, humpback calves signal their hunger by gently nudging their mothers or uttering soft grunts and squeaks. The moms answer the requests by responding with quiet calls. The team believes these quiet conversations help whale mother keep track of their young in murky waters without being overheard by dangerous threats. According to Videsen, “Potential predators, such as killer whales could listen to their conversations and use that as a clue to locate the calf and attack on it.” The scientists think that the low audible conversation also keeps mate-seeking males at bay, allowing the females to focus on nurturing the newborns before the tough, 5,000-mile journey back to the feeding grounds in the Antarctic. 18. READING FOR QUESTIONS 18 TO 22, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Bison, symbolic animals of the Great Plains, are often mistakenly called buffaloes. They are formidable beasts and the heaviest land animals in North America. Bison stand some 5 to 6.5 feet tall at the shoulder, and can weigh over a ton. Despite their massive size, bison are quick on their feet. When the need arises they can run at speeds up to 40 miles an hour. They sport curved, sharp horns that may grow to be two feet long. These large grazers feed on plains’ grasses, herbs, shrubs and twigs. They regurgitate their food and chew it as cud before nal digestion. Ha bi ta t lo ss and un regu la te d shoo ti ng redu ce d th e po pu la ti on to ju st 1,091 by 1889. Today, approximately 500,000 bison live across North America. Fewer than 30,000 wild bison are in conservation herds and fewer than 5,000 are unfenced and disease-free. Bison are adapted to the extreme weather conditions of the Great Plains, from summer heat to winter cold and blizzards. In winter, bison can dig through deep snow with their heads to reach the vegetation below. Bison often rub, roll and wallow. Wallowing creates a saucer-like depression in the earth called a wallow. This was once a common feature of the plains; usually these wallows are dust bowls without any vegetation.
