— Quem?

Não mete a mão no meu ombro, ombro, não, tá ligado? — Esses gringo vem pra cá, tudo louro, bota logo rasta… Louro de rasta. — Ai, eu acho horrível! — sentenciou Janira.
CANTINA DA LUA: LUA, LUAR, TOMA TEU FILHO PRA TU CRIAR esvaziamento do Centro Histórico.

Estaria desconfiada, a esposa?

— Me deixe, Irã! — Me deixe!
LADEIRA DO TABUÃO: ELEVADOR DO TABUÃO, COURO DO TABUÃO, TELEVISÃO DO TABUÃO,
FOLHETIM DO TABUÃO, ROSAS DO TABUÃO, COSTURA DO TABUÃO

— Nanã, me salva desse homem! homem!
E botou a cana no chão.

— E a minha pegou pegou mil!
L Láá no noss A Ala laga gado do t t amb ambé

afastando do campo.
— Poxa! Não tô achando meu smart card! Acho que perdi! — respondeu Nininha, Nininha, vasculhando a bolsinha tiracolo.
— Vixe! Vixe! E agora? — Acho que eu vou ter que ir a pé. Tô sem dinheiro pra pagar inteira. inteira. — Vixe! Que é isso? Vai Vai andar isso tudo? Eu lhe empresto, amanhã amanhã você me paga!
Alguma coisa do cheque…
— E as criança?
Preferia vir a pé.

DOIS DE JULHO - Who? - The cue ball. - And who's the cue ball, Sr. Bahia? - Man, the cue ball is the husband. If the guy hasn't got the balls to win the championship, his wife will instantly relegate him to the second division! - Win the championship, Sr. Bahia? - Win the championship, man. The championship is being there, every day, one goal after another. Now, if the guy comes home and only manages to hit the post, his wife is gonna give him the red card and it's the substitute who takes his place. - You have to go in hard, right, Sr. Bahia? Or else you'll lose your position. - You need to be a striker. - And what if the guy is a striker but only plays against defensive teams? - Then he has to attack from the sides to open up the defense, then he can go through the middle… - And what if the guy is married? - He has to get away from his marker. - And what if it's man-to-man marking? - Then he has to get into the penalty area with everything he's got. - Hey, Sr. Bahia, is it true that you don't use the Corredor da Vitória? - It's true, I don't. - It's because you can't stand the Vitória football team, isn't it? - It's not like that, no. - What is it then, Sr. Bahia? - It's not to be associated with a similar name. - Sr. Bahia, have you got beiju? - No, I've got Beijoca.

MOURARIA: JUST A CONTRIBUTION or HER HUSBAND AND DONAS FLORES It's like this: First Hildo asks the two gringos -who've just come out of the cab and are taking pictures of Palma church- if they want to see the house where "Dona Flôr" was shot. - Dona Flow? So Hildo explains: - The movie, "Dona Flôr and her two husbands"... It was shot near here, right around this corner, here, in a house that's for sale... The gringos look at each other with a "why not?" expression on their faces, and another person, sitting on the curb -I think he's called Rato- says: - We're just looking for a contribution here, towards our beer - he speaks this way to improve his chances, counting on the gringos' eagerness to please. They usually agree, in that garbled way of speaking: - O… oil rightee… Then, Hildo offers to go with them; they turn the corner and, after taking a few pictures of the façade, they start gabbling in that language of theirs: - Hey, I went to give him the money and he turned his back on me! -He probably doesn't want to take money, he wants you to pay for the beer: people here have their pride, it seems. The three of them walked back brushing past Élder, initially cheerful but now tightlipped, waiting for the time to go in -which is when one of the gringos touches his shoulder, in a familiar kind of way: "Re-lax, I go give beer. You think I wazn't go come back? Think I waz go run away?" - Hey, what the hell are you doing?! Are you crazy?! Do you think I damn well need you to pay for anything? Do not put your hand on my shoulder, you hear me? The gringos' facial expressions turn to "oh, what's all this, man… it was just a joke": - Calmey downey, it was just… - Just what?! Just what, man?! Don't you put your hand on my shoulder, 'cause I don't need your money! - the other gringo hurries to order the beer from the store owner - I don't need you to pay fuck-all for me, you piece of shit! Now leave the beer there! Leave the beer there! Right there, on the sidewalk! Leave it there and piss off! Meanwhile the gringos quickly start walking away and soon switch to running, while Élder carries on: - Get the hell out of here! Piss off, you good-for-nothings! Only the part where Élder goes back to his chair needs more rehearsing, because everyone always starts laughing…
It takes several minutes for Élder to manage to control his laughing and ask a question of Hildo, who'd crouched down to get a better view of the gringos running away: - So… is it really true that they shot that film in that house over there? - What do I know? I haven't seen the film.
CANTINA DA LUA: MOON, MOONLIGHT, TAKE YOUR SON AND RAISE HIM Clarindo Silva, coordinator of Projeto Cultural Cantina da Lua, president of the Association of the Friends of Nelson Maleiro and incumbent president of the Historical Center Commercial Association.
My first experience of the historical center, came about, in part, as a result of a strange coincidence, as my mother had sent our aunt a letter asking if she could wait for us at the Maritime Terminal, but by the time that letter arrived we'd already been here for seventeen days. The coincidence was that my mother had been a maid in the house of a traditional family here in the center, and that was the same house where we found shelter during our first days here in Salvador. We then went to live in the neighborhood of Pau Miúdo, but every time that -well, of course I, all of us, had to work, I had already started working at the age of eight-... but whenever we needed to set up a sales stall I would always come to the Pelourinho area. And when I was 12 I started work in this firm -as a housekeeper to be precise- which took in most of the building and was called the Bazar Americano, while the Cantina da Lua only had two small doors there in the corner. And since then... well, I started as a housekeeper, became a panel-beater, counter-assistant, shop assistant, deputy manager, manager, accountant, I took a specialist course in journalism, went to work for the newspaper A Tarde, after A Tarde I worked for the Jornal da Bahia, from the Jornal da Bahia I went to the Tribuna da Bahia, and by '71 I'd quit the Bazar and the journal too... So, in '71 I started to rent the Cantina. The Cantina had been founded in '45 by Renato Santos, there were just two small doors.. . I remember I bought a one-hob stove , I bought two kettles, two saucepans, two casseroles -that's right- two "ropes" of common crabs, three "ropes" of siri crabs, five dozen clams and started my life's journey. So, ever since that time, the center has been going through a period of decay. There were the so-called traditional families, which had all left for the Corredor da Vitória, Graça, Barra -and we could already somehow sense the Historical Center gradually emptying. The 70s really saw this process get worse, especially when the Faculty of Medicine moved away, the Law Medicine Institute moved, Incra's headquarters moved, Bahia's Literary Academy moved, they closed down the Cine Santo Antônio movie theater, closed down Cine Popular,
the principal aim of which was to fight for the revitalization and conservation of our cultural heritage, and from that emerged the Festa da Benção and the Samba no Terreiro… Terreir o… With the Benção, we had a feeling that it could be the big attraction, and, in reality, it turned out to be a great -I would say-... a great platform for launching the revitalization... But, as incredible as It may seem, and despite having brought the cream of Bahia's artists -Batatinha, Ederaldo Gentil, Edil Pacheco, Riachão, Claudete Macedo, Miriam Tereza, Tuninha Luna, Walmir Lima, Nelson Rufino- the first show saw only 55 people in front of the stage! However, despite such a setback, we didn't give up. That same year we held Cantina da Lua's first anniversary party, and booked Zezé Motta, who was then the leading soap-opera star... And we managed to fill the Terreiro with over three thousand people, which meant that we'd dealt with a lot of the prejudice! This event motivated me to keep the project alive, so much so that we had as many as 800 shows and had the audacity to invite four Ministers of Culture -all in front of the Cantina da Lua. Yes, we've had shows featuring any musician you can think of: Pinduca, from Belém in Pará… We aimed to make the Historical Center's decay a national and international issue. It became a national issue when great Brazilian artists and some international ones came here... We brought four Ministers of Culture here and had the gall to hand over a document to the Pope, a letter from Projeto Cultural Cantina da Lua… In the letter I spoke of the neglect of the Barroquinha church -where father Antônio V ieira gave passionate sermons- I a lso mentio ned the ne glected b uilding of the Faculty of Medicine, which had been the first jesuit school in Brazil, I spoke also of unemployment, the sterilization of black women, children's mortality... And then we created a manifesto for the nation. And we didn't stop there -just like today, we're carrying on the fight, showing why the revitalization of the Center is so important. But, our first great victory will occur specifically in 1985, when the Historical Center is registered as a World Heritage site...
TERREIRO DE JESUS: CAM ON MAI FRENDY "Part of 'Angola' Capoeira's character and something rooted in Bahi an cultu re, is this k ind of baroque thing you find in the culture of Bahia, right? It certainl y h as a lot to do with it. Like you're watching a movie in slow motion it' s played close to the ground... When you see it for the first time you wouldn't even say it's a fight. 'Regional' Capoeira isn't like that. 'Regional' Capoeira has a way of expressing itself to show that it is a fight: body movements are high, you play quick. Bimba didn't want to lose sight of this, you understa nd? He
requirements for selecting those who'd then be invited to watch the kids' capoeira game -the perennial "beginners"- though many times he only managed to get people to watch long after the opening song and, occasionally, almost right at the end of the presentation. - Hey, mai frendy, come and see, boi, yew see. Look! Yew see, a show… Show! Capoeira, anderstendy? It's starting! Right now! Now! Na-ow! Cam on, mai frendy, cam on! He would aim first for those people -you know- who looked like tourists, right? The pink face, Senhor do Bonfim ribbons everywhere... He wouldn't rule out using more persuasivee methods, like placing his huge arm on the prospectiv persuasiv prospectivee spectator's shoulders to better 'escort' him to the presentation -because it doesn't matter how much they resist at the beginning, "naw, naw, mai frendy, yew, you're gonna l-u-u-rve it", he knows that, in the e nd, people like it so much they want to make a contribution, see? - Con-trib-ute, anderstendy? You contribute, anderstendy? - he said, showing the gringo his thumb and forefinger rubbing together. Because not everybody contributes, you know? And on more than one occasion he'd felt obliged to turn down a certain sum of money, suggesting that it might be exchanged for something a little more 'significant', "please, O-Kay, mai frendy?". But when he didn't manage to hook a gringo -to be honest, they'd got kind of slippery, lately- he needed to lower his requirements, to the extent of approaching anyone who passed by, like this guy here: - Cam on, mai frendy, cam on, let's go and watch a capoeira show … - What d'you say, man? I'm from here, from Salvador! Are you blind or what? I'm no gringo, man. Look at my color… Do I look like a gringo? - O-Kay, mai frendy, cam on. Come. This way sir, you'll really enjoy it, so much you'll want to contribute, anderstendy? Con-trib-ute. The young man stressed his lack of time, but Cinzal, putting his arm around the guy's shoulders, advised him: "naw, naw, mai frendy, you're going to like it, really, vary mutch, you'll even want to contribute, con-trib-ute". And while he showed the young man his thumb and forefinger rubbing together, he wanted to know if this time his English had been clear enough... gently patting the back of the guy's neck in a gesture of Bahian hospitality: - Anderstendy? - A-A-Anderstendy.
MARCELA'S RHYME - Italian?! I wouldn't have guessed! I'd say you're from somewhere else, but I wouldn't say
The cousin he was talking about was precisely the third person at the table. As a matter of fact he had been in Brazil for a few weeks and still wouldn't venture to speak the language. Marcela stared at the pavement, having exchanged phone numbers with the two Italians and ensured that on the following day, she would bring a friend along, to accompany the cousin, who had remained silent. The fact is that she lived far from the city center. She was going to walk down the Ladeira do Tabuão in order to get a bus from Comércio, when she thought of having a soft drink -indeed, she hadn't drunk anything while sitting with the Italians. From there she would go to Calçada Station, where she'd take the train to Paripe. She allowed her bag to slip off her naked shoulder, sliding along her white -almost transparent- dress, eventually stopping it with her hand. She raised her head -or, rather, she tilted it backwards, so as to look down on the world. Her steps slowly followed each other, as if she were doubling her efforts to move her body forward. And why did Marcela make up that sto ry of having lived in Ita ly? She didn' t count o n him knowing Treviso, or on the possibility that a city with such a name -that she had once read about- could be so well known... And why did she always regret things after having done them? What was it again, that verse her grandfather used to sing her on the window sill? "Put the lid on the pan-ela, in the bowl throw Marc-ela and take her off to the chap-ela" "Take her off to the chap-ela." Take her off to the chap-ela...
BAIXA DOS SAPATEIROS: CINE-PROJECTORS On Baixa dos Sapateiros street the sales girl in the clothes store calls out to the man on the sidewalk passing by: - Come on in honey, come check out our store… But the man pays her no attention. On Baixa dos Sapateiros street another sales assistant calls to another man: - Come in sir, come and see our first-class products. One of them smiles, says no, no, not now, thanks; another asks the price even though the price-tag is visible. A lady also asks about the price. Another man, that hadn't been called by the sales girl, stepped into the shop; he studied the window for some time... But no one bought anything. - Come on in sugar, you're welcome… Have a look around our store…
her to quit chatting in the entrance as there could be clients waiting to be served. Some customers stop -but most pass straight by. Most of the time people just pass by. But on Baixa dos Sapateiros street... They didn't know, my god, about a man... who had just passed right by his mistress -who was waiting for him to come back with a bag of popcorn- as if he didn't even know her, at the entrance to Cine Jandaia. Instead he told his wife he'd bought the popcorn for her as soon as he saw her coming out of Rua *** arm-in-arm with her friend. On Baixa dos Sapateiros street, this mistress -how old was she, the mistress? Oh, so young?!- crossed the arms she'd once opened for the man who went away with his wife… Did she suspect anything, the wife? Why else would she appear like that? The mistress bought herself a bag of popcorn and took the streetcar home, eating the popcorn piece by piece, delicately, feeling empty inside... On Baixa dos Sapateiros street the cinema for that mistress was always in the afternoon, when the sun was a little lower, painting everything yellow...
LACERDA: HOW MANY SECONDS TO SAVE MYSELF? In fact he wasn't making a phone call -he was pretending in case he'd been waiting in vain... His haste in rushing off -as soon as she appeared in Praça Tomé de Souza, after crossing Rua da Misericordia and passing under the Mayor's building- didn't buy him any more time. He just failed to put the handset back o n the hook before leaving to catch up with her... ...and so showing that he already counted on the lack of punctuality that made her come and take the Lacerda Elevator once again in a rush, just like the other times, rocking herself on the heels of her sandals. She kept looking at her watch with the plastic strap, while at the same time impatiently sliding her forefinger into a tiny purse, hunting for small change. Catching up with her at last, he manages to put himself behind her in the ticket queue with just two people in between them. - Vânia! Vânia, in the most natural way she could, looked around while trying to move into another queue and avoid facing the man whose voice she had immediately recognized. But the pace at which she was moving and the counter getting closer made her lower her head again to the purse, so as to separate larger coins from smaller ones with which she strived to make up the five cents for the ticket.
her before she got to the turnstile where the ticket is inserted. - Let me go, Irã! - Do you know that your brother called in at my place yesterday? - Let me go! - she said, freeing her arm. - Do you know? Do you or don't you? - I told him not to go! He went because he wanted to! - Do you think I'm afraid of your brother? After the e levator doors opened and t hose wh o had come up poure d out to go to different addresses in the Upper City, Vânia, Irã and the people queuing with them are able to fill it again, allowing the operator to push the button to go down and the mechanics of the elevator of Vânia and Irã Lacerda's life take all of us to the Lower City. 30 seconds and about to end, covering 72 meters, to link one city to the other. "Look at that...! It looks like they're trashing all the phones!" says a man, heading to the next payphone.
LADEIRA DA MONTANHA: "NO… YOU ARE…" It doesn't matter how many seconds, what matters is the effort Vânia made not to listen to anything Irã was saying, while cursing herself for her forgetfulness that morning... Though the arrow pointing down was still lit, the structure of the Lacerda Elevator extended horizontally -whereas originally it wouldn't have dared- over Ladeira da Montanha Street, where along came a bus from Comércio completely ignoring the lively drama of a couple, several yards above. It also ignored footsteps on the sidewalks of the Ladeira -which links with tarmac that which the elevator connects by a drop- as well as the glass of beer tipped back against the sun shining through the windows of the Ladeira's bars and reflected on the water of All Saint' s Bay; foo d and shelt er in ho llowed buildings. It also ignored two sisters embracing after so long without seeing each other; and ignored the way the sister who'd stayed behind nervously moved her hands back and forth between her hips and face, and then hugged the sister who'd gone away -younger and taller-who she always knew to be more fun-loving and happier… - It's not just me, you're happy too… And they smiled, and hugged a gain. Discove ring that one was fatter, the ot her thinner -but both in pretty good shape. Both simultaneously emotional at having missed each
PRAÇA CAYRU: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF AN ADOLESCENT LOVE
- Look here, read this bit here... - Where? - Here, this one here: "when from inside the seed..." To comply with a novena devotion and receive grace the commitment must be strong a person should not be weak for nine days a Christian prays with all his heart not missing a single day. Interrupting a novena shows a weakness in the unhappy soul who lacks good judgment and strength of conviction and only later understands that the grace received is the opposite of what is desired... Vânia felt sorry for herself as it was a great pity to have failed -today of all daysto comply with the novena she felt great remorse suffering for this neglect and seeing herself as worthless. For eight days she prayed with the utmost faith and devotion begging for Irã Lacerda to be erased from her life but today, the final day, she contrived to stray from the path preventing the fulfillment of the novena. The commitment was broken the prayer weakened she cursed herself her own weak resolve the grace received
differently from when he was just a boy and the squeeze he would give her she felt like a caress, giving her faith in her destiny. When the love is that of a child it is born with the light of day born with faith and hope blessed by the Virgin Mary and just like a seed it grows into an adolescent filling our lives with joy. A young woman is a barren land waiting to bloom waiting for someone to come and sow the harsh ground of her heart knowing that one's first love is the true one forever written on the palm of your hand. But what she never worked out is when it all started to change and the mechanism of the elevator went into reverse the love that had driven the upward elevator suddenly started to come down. When from inside the seed the ugly brute emerged and hitherto sweet boy-Jesus showed its true colors a bag of salt spilled over the conjugal bed the day turned into a long wait. Besides, at this point in time after everything that had happened
NOSSA SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO DA PRAIA: "TAKE MY THOUGHTS AWAY, I BESEECH YOU!" When the pain came he almost laughed, as if he wasn't feeling pain. When he looked down and saw the blood, it was as if he only saw the church steps, instead of his foot cut by the coconut husk. "Look, seeing as everything gets washed here, I'll wash it with my own blood, see", he couldn't help thinking. He felt a sharp pain but it didn't cross his mind to go back. Sure he could play, even with a cut foot... "A little cut -it's nothing", finding a way to avoid thinking about what usually seemed to occupy his mind -and this time he really didn't want to think about it, as he was feeling pretty chilled; sort of getting used to it... Alright, he was no long er a profe ssional -he'd passed the age for a ll that anyway- but at least he did enjoyed having a kickabout in the morning. Because all he had ever known was how to play football. But it's not like that, is it dad? Not everybody's gonna make the national team -is that or isn't that the case, dad? There's only room for eleven in a team, and that's it… He had, well, some contracts, right… But it didn't happen and, in the end, he didn't sign any… What can you do about it, dad? That's just the way it is, you shouldn't get wound up by it… You know what you shouldn't have, old man? Greed. It didn't work out and that's it. It just wasn't meant to be, right? How many times had this happened? That he got so close to signing…? It wasn't the first time that the very thing he was trying not to think about seized him like this. Because even though he didn't want to think about it, he did. And boy was he thinking about it now! It wasn't the first time, oh no…! Calm down, dad… See, old man, the cut's already stopped bleeding. A piece of coconut in front of the church, man… C'mon, let's go, they're waiting for you at the game!
LADEIRA DO TABUÃO: TABUÃO ELEVATOR, TABUÃO LEATHER, TABUÃO TELEVISION, TABUÃO LEAFLETS, TABUÃO ROSES, TABUÃO REPAIRS It's all because Michele Faifer decided not to wait for her letter to be the one selected on television: she asked Virgínia from the clothes store to be the presenter and off she went to Rua do
this happened now, Heleno? - Go on, marry her now, 'bro! - someone said. - Fifty cents? Look, a bargain! You're gonna miss it? You're gonna miss it? - said someone else. - Yeah, it's just like that program where TV stars go into people's houses! - said another. Heleno, if he could choose, would rather turn up at the door, take a look and that would be enough, he'd have seen it. He'd rather not have to leave the fort. He'd rather return to his machine and finish stitching as work was piling up at the shoe-repair shop. Virgínia, from the clothes store, he knew already; that fat queen there, holding the cardboard camera, he also knew -thick as thieves with Michele Faifer. The others he knew to look at... that girl licking a popsicle, so two-faced... And Virgínia from the clothes store imitating a TV presenter: - So tell me, honey, what's your name? And Michele Faifer answering, with that big wailing mouth o f hers: - Michele Faifer! I'm an actress and a singer! I've got a special promotion on my weby page, double-you, double-you, double-you, dot com, dot bee-aar! There's a reduction on the price of my love, especially for the man I gave it to, he got it for free! Michele Faifer already needed to shout, as her voice was drowned out by the laughter and applause of the viewers.
COMÉRCIO: MERCADO DO OURO, "OBSECRATION" Vânia was still looking over her shoulder, as if at any moment Irã would try again to catch up with her. She'd got used to this, living for the moment. She pulls herself together as best as she's able, lifts the bag strap, straightens her step, takes a deep breath. Only now could she feel her arm aching from the strength of Irã's grip. No, she hadn't deliberately forgotten about the novena; it was just bad timing! Was it true that her brother had been knocking at Irã's door, the night before? She resolved to talk again with her mother about her brother, although she knew that Irã could be a real liar sometimes. She checks the time again. She's going to be late for work. Maybe it would have been better to have started the novena when she returned home after work, not in the morning when she regularly went without breakfast so as not to miss the bus! She knew that the situation with Irã really upset her brother... It's just bad timing... She's going to be late... Her arm aches... Leave my brother out of it Irã: he's got nothing
SANTO ANTÔNIO ALÉM DO CARMO: MIAMI YAM Zé repeated through the loudspeaker: - Come and get 'em. Twenty oranges, one real, twenty oranges, one real; tomatoes, onions, green peppers, chuchu, carrots, lemons, "King Edward" potatoes, sweet potatoes -better than bread! Big bag of yam, one real, Miami yam! Four jumbo coconuts one real, four dry coconuts, one real… Fifteen eggs, two reais, two reais for fifteen eggs! Big bag of mangoes, one real, big bag of passion fruit, one real! Get your limes, squeeze 'em, make lime juice! Then he told Júnior, at the wheel, to turn around here, right here on Largo da Cruz do Pascoal: - Turn around, bro'. - Aren't we going down there? - No, no, let's turn around... - It'll get better if we go further on. - No, c'mon... no, man, I know what I'm doing. Let's go back, let's turn around. Júnior felt his hand slipping more than usual on the wheel, which by now was already greasy. Turn around, Júnior. Let your hand slip and you will already be making the turn. Turn around because you can't take things back. The car that just passed by won't come back; that customer who only bought oranges won't come back; the scolding you gave your sister can't be taken back; the... - You crying, bro'? - asked Zé, rolling the cable round his hand, the one that held the microphone, the way those top singers do it. - It's just sweat that went into my eye. - Right, stings like hell, don't it? But Júnior didn't respond, as he doesn't say much; or rather, his dialogue is internal, as if all of his answers need interpreting. Zé, after sitting for a minute, appears at the door of the van again: - Twenty oranges, one real, twenty oranges, one real. "King Edward" potatoes, sweet potatoes -better than bread! We got tomatoes, carrots, green peppers, chuchu, lemons! Big bag of yam, one real, Miami yam! One real! Big bag of mangoes, one real, big bag of passion fruit, one real! Four dry coconuts, one real, jumbo coconuts, take four for four of you, one real… Fifteen eggs, two reais, fifteen eggs, two reais! Get your limes, eat limes, get your limes, eat limes! Onions that bring on tears, cleanse your eyes, make a Christian beg forgiveness!
RETIRO: PROTECTING BARRIER
going back yet again. That's why Vânia, once again, put her hand in her bag. She keeps doing this while waiting for the bus. She holds the note between her fingers, feeling the paper to confirm that it's still there, deep inside her bag, protected. It's because she's afraid she might lose the piece of paper containing the novena devotion her Pai de Santo has taught her to keep Irã Lacerda out of her life: - A 'daughter' of Nanã is no match for a 'son' of Xangô, my dear... It's most unlikely... And did she not pray t o her Orixá a lot? - Nanã, save me from this man! And again she puts her ha nd into the bag, just to be sure that the last time she did this the paper didn't stick to her fingers and drop to the floor without her noticing... Only now she can't find it anymore...! Where is it, oh my God? Where is that piece of paper? Now that the bus is coming, heavens above! Where's the note? Where is it...? "It's here! It's here. Thank God!"
edge of the wharf where you can see the sky, instead of the labyrinths of the market. Especially now, given his 'fluctuating' conditions, because he knew that amongst so many twists and turns -those little steps on the edge- and those piles of boxes, if you don't watch out... And Ozório is going to take care not to slip, not to stumble, not to tri-i.... Helinho from the Tempero Lampião spicery could only make out an object passing by, collapsing, and he ran to see what it was. - Are you hurt, Ozório? Do not answer, Ozório. Keep your head down, otherwise they will see the reason why you've been falling so much written all over your face. Because you spat out so often "I doubt you'll ever leave" that, one day, she did. Christ the King.
ITAPARICA: FORT BEACH, WHAT'S MY FORTE? FEIRA DE SÃO JOAQUIM: SKY BLUE, WHO FELL? IT WAS LOVE THAT FELL Because if this was the case, with so many macumba stands here at the market he'd already cast a hex to deal with it. Because he was aware that, for some time now, he'd taken to tumbling all too easily. A sort of hiccup, but involving a fall. It was a stumble, slip, skid, a false step, absentmindlessly tripping, bumping, hitting, unsteady legs... no matter, whatever it was, Ozório kept falling over. - Ozório, look out Ozório! Take care! You're not going to fall again... But he was no macumba man. And he put the sugarcane down. He had been one, until he realized that it was all work of the devil, designed to mess with your head. - Ozório, do me a favor: take this to Orlando down in "Garlic Alley" for me would you? And take c are not to fall on the way, ok? Ozório took the piece of paper from the hands of Jailton, the coordinator of "Sugarcane Street" -and the one who hired him week by week to stack sugarcane bundles on the ground, after unloading them from the truck that brought them from the district of Candeias directly to the Feira de São Joaquim. He left the length of cane he had stripped cooling in the sun (as everyone knows sugarcane must cool in the sun before being chewed to avoid bellyache) and headed towards "Garlic Alley". He remembered that he still hadn't had so much as one small slip since he arrived that morning, despite what all the other stackers said: - You're falling over a lot, Ozório! Are you feeling feeble, Ozório? You don't actually eat,
Bad plus bad equals bad. Bad plus good equals good. Good plus good, you say 'amen'. - My grandmother caught four guaiamu crabs. - Mine caught five - prompted Zoinho, though his attention was really aimed at the twig he was twisting in his fingers: he'd snapped it off the tamarind tree he was leaning against - which explains why he wasn't concentrating on the game. - And mine caught a thousand! - concluded Cheli, who was on her way to fetch water from the Bica fountain. Cesar turned towards São Lourenço Fort -which had belonged to the Dutch and the Portugueses, but remains Itaparican- feigning resignation, then said loudly: - Yeah... She's even forgotten how to play the game, d'ya see? But Cheli didn't give Zoinho time to answer: - Oh, right, I forgot. I was distracted... Mine caught six and you can take this!... - only extending her middle finger to the other two didn't correspond to the gesture made when they were younger and used to run away or get caught stealing fruit by some landowner - the one of half-revealing their pubescent parts… Time passed, the wind blew gently. - Look Zói, you know what my mother said? D'you know, Cheli? See that chain up there, on that tree there? You see, there? There, look. Can you see it? The chain up there? Cheli said yes. Zoinho, being cross-eyed, took longer. - So, that tree has been there for ages and ages. The slaves used to be tied up there, only that in those days the tree only came up to here. The chain would be further down. Here, see? The slaves would be tied up there and the whites, their owners, would whip them!
FROM RIBEIRA TO BONFIM: DRAGGED IN, DREDGED UP And while Nazar é w as saying "Thank God" after catching the floppy disk thrown by Lúcia... ... Cira pointed out the place where José Jaime had rescued a drowning girl, right there, in the direction of Bonfim church, see? - José Jaime, the call girl's lifeguard! - said Bruxo, sitting against the cane-juice machine. Everyone laughed. But what Cira didn't know was that if her finger was long enough it would cross Ribeira, pass by the Porto da Lenha and reach the Bonfim church, over there in the distance, and just about touch the hair of Simone who -clinging to the railings of the gate despite being eight-months pregnant- was trying to make out the bells in the tower. "It's a pity they're not ringing," she thought, since she loved the sound of church bells. - Really, José Jaime? José Jaime, adjusting his dark glasses, answered every question with undisguised pride: - Yeah, we do rescues every now and then... People turn up here not knowing the beach and when they go in they fall into those holes over there, dug up by the dredger... That dredger is the one that takes soil to Alagados. They're using that soil as landfill down there... Over at Alagados you can also see Bonfim... - Really? - That's right, from there too… Simone was thirsty; she didn't know that pregnancy could make you so thirsty. Her friend Ágata -half looking for the bells, half just looking around- said all the girls were asking after her. - Well, girl, so now... only after the birth... - And are you really going back? - Why, of course: what did you think? That I'm going to leave my place empty like that? Just you wait and see. After the baby's born I'll be back in the saddle, girl. I'll set the place alight -back on top of the world, I'll be queen once again! - And was it really a call girl? - Oh yeah, he doesn't rescue men, no, he leaves them to drown! He only rescues women, and especially call girls! - Bruxo cut in. - That's not true: it's just coincidence, bro'! Only because I happen to rescue more women! - A coincidence… mmm... - It's a coincidence, bro'.
ALAGADOS: SEALING LAGOON The slipper slipped off! It slipped off again! And again! Only after concentrating on the way she put her toes in, was she able to make it fit. - I was replying to this email he's just sent me. This here is no lagoon... because that's what he thought! He doesn't know! - said Lúcia, grabbing the disks that were lying on the bed - I was explaining to him that this here is no lagoon, it's the edge of each neighborhood! They're located over two -what's the word?- inlet! over two sea inlets, right? - That's right - Nazaré replied, squeezing herself against the wall as Lúcia dashed out of the door: because internet access is more expensive during the day and maybe Nazaré wouldn't remember how much Rubinho had paid the last time. Nazaré did remember, despite being left dizzy by the rush Lucia was sometimes in, moreso now, after she had started exchanging email messages with that guy from Sergipe. - Hey! Nazaré! Nazaré! When Nazaré made it to the door she came across Lúcia in a frenzy, almost letting her floppy disks fall from under her arm. She needed to ask Rubinho to open them on his computer so she could see which of them contained that picture where she looked her best -to send it over by email. Yet since that day with the virus she can't see any picture at all on her computer! - We don't need this disk, it has written on it what it is! Just hold it! - No! Don't throw it!
ENSEADA DO CABRITO: CALÇADA-PARIPE SUBURBAN TRAIN; HOW MANY BOATS CAN BE SEEN FROM THE WINDOW? - … another top-rating program from Rádio Sociedade da Bahia. The Morning Show! Ed Carlos... - This is your very best friend! Good morning! Win movie tickets for Ponto Alto I and II theaters. - Sociedade! Sociedade! Putting the listener first. - You're calling and taking part in today's survey: do you think that the truth should be told no matter what? Whatever the cost? Yes or no? Call Zete! Now, a word from our sponsors and in a little while we'll be back... - Radio Sociedade da Bahia! Everything you need to know!
name is Neném, I'm a fisherman", he'd say loudly, "it's... like this... I don't think so, sir, there are people who aren't able to hear the truth when it's told, no sir". I'd just want to see how the expression on Jadir's face would change… He knows how to bad-mouth someone, when he wants to, right? He doesn't care whether it's in front of others or not... But when it's time to listen, he doesn't like it, oh no! When people tell him what a fool he is, he doesn't like it. If it wasn't for his bills being due, Neném would have sorted out another boat to work on. Today it became clear he couldn't go on with Jadir! - Neném, fasten this for me! "Asking for help, are you? When you want my help you know how to talk to me, don't you?" - thought Neném while taking off his shirt and securing firmly one end of the rope. Jadir, leaning forward, only half-managed to tighten the knot before he shoved his head against that of Neném, who remained tense. He's always going to be this tense. With Jadir it's over. No more laughs. No more chat. If he wants he can laugh at his own clowning about: as for me, forget it. Don't try and give me that smiley face, ok? It's over. And Neném was holding the rope so tightly he couldn' t say who laughed first. No r who first silently apologized... Nor who helped who more, when pulling in the boat that pulls in the nets... - Sociedade… Bahia's radio station! - And we're back, reminding you that today you can win movie tickets to Ponto Alto I and II theaters. Phone up and join in right now! All of you at home, in y our car or at work; on foot, on a train or on a boat...
A SEDIMENTARY CATALOG OF THE ROAD TO CACHOEIRA
head. She had no patience. So young and already so impatient. In particular, Ózinha had no patience for her sister's favourite subject, a certain Maria Quitéria and a certain Ana Néri… God, where's the fun in all of this? - Do you know where Andwé Pinto Webowsas was born? Wight here, in this town… Cachoeiwan he was -her sister continued, this time passing her hand over the cobblestones to see if she could find the earring by feeling for it- Amewica's gweatest juwisconsult: Awgusto Teixeiwa de Fweitas -ta king longer than she normally would to say "juwisconsult", out of a sense of municipal pride- was bawn here in Cachoeiwa; Ewnesto Simões Filho… Did you know that Webowsas was the inventor of the hydwaulic pump? - No. - He was an enginee-ar back in impewial times… He's the patwon saint of enginee-ars … a Cachoeiwan… Now this is something my town can be pwoud of, isn't it? - Sure. - Hey, Ózinha, haven't you see anything yet? - No. Ózinha couldn't say which was worse: the neverending parade of the actual names themselves or having to listen to them from her sister's mouth. But in heaven's name why had she been singled out to have a sister who likes to wallow in the stuff of history to show how smart she is? Who has -moreover- a way of swallowing her tongue, wawa-wa-wa-wa? And who, on top of everything else, may as well be blind! She can't even see the earring there; look, it's even sparkling in the sun, everyone can see it except her… She's passing her hand over all the cobblestones… It won't be me who'll tell her where it is: if she wants to find it she can stay down there, on all fours, just lik e that horse o ver ther e… If s he doesn 't tak e care , its owner mi ght ge t it wro ng, mistake her for the horse! - Haven't you seen it yet? - No. It's no wonder everyone says to their mother "your daughters are so different from each other..."
MANOEL BARRADAS STADIUM: MY MOTHER AND MY FATHER CACHOEIRA: I JURISCONSULT YOU - ... so Cachoeiwa had two waw hewoes: Mawia Quitewia and Ana Newi… What! Not hewoes but hewowins! Why? Because they were still menstwuating! Can't you see anything yet?
It's like doing two jobs at the same time, right? Seeing to the guy ordering over here, by your side and at the same time looking out for your mother, over there. - I'll take one, 'bro. - What flavor?
was also calling him - "Look at that... I told her not to do that, look..." Because Adelino was sure he'd told his mother countless times that, in the street, she didn't need to do things the same way she'd do them at home, because outside in the street is not the same as inside in the house. At home you have me and my brothers, but the street is different, mom. Like she wants to juggle everything, trying to make everyone happy, you see? As if it was for me and my brothers! So, it ends up with change being dropped, peanuts slipping out of her grasp, too much time wasted counting money... And so people start complaining, asking her to get out of the way, saying she's stopping them seeing the game... So I have to look out for her or who knows what could happen. Just like the arguments with my dad! How many times did I say: "mom, don't talk the way dad does, sure, argue with him, but don't stand up to him copying what he says!" - what he wanted to say, basically, is that it just didn't seem proper to him, his mother using his father's filthy street talk just so she could compete in family rows... ... but Adelino wouldn't be able to convey the neatness, the clarity of this idea. Is it blasphemous, a son teaching his mother? - I'll have one, please. Adelino picked out the soft drink bottle, hande d it to the customer with t he change and again turned to look at his mother, over there... ... it was her smile that taught you, Adelino.
can you change this for me?" - Eva resigned herself, while noticing that the embers in the tin pan had died out. She knew that Miguel wasn't bothered by this, as taboca wafers come ready made in small bags, you just give it to the customer. It's not like the white cheese, that you have to hold over the grill, see if the client wants molasses on it, things like that... - No they don't give change, you know why? Because the hardest thing to get is two fivers. They don't give change, that's the problem... I don't have a savings book, I don't ever want an account in a bank! I don't have an account. Because they don't give change... You go there, they don't have change... So, see what I did... I said: "Look here, I'm gonna give you nine real, all in singles, and this leaves me short". And he said -and before repeating for the third or fourth time what the gringo had said, he turned his lips downward, exaggerating his mocking expression- "All right, but God is going to help you, God is going to help you", because I was doing a good deed! Then he took his change, put it all in his pocket. So I said: "I'm just missing the tenner"; and he: "Eh? Oh? Didn't I already give you the ten?" And me: "No"; so he said -Miguel gave a forced smile, to imitate the gringo- "oh, that's right, I didn't… no, you're right", as if he had forgotten to give me the tenner! Just imagine! As if he had forgotten to give me the tenner...
ITAPUÃ: THE BLOOD FROM YOUR FOOT, THE BLOOD FROM YOUR HAND ABAETÉ: "LEAVES ME SHORT" - What is it? Tilapia, isn't it? - Right, tilapia - confirmed Eva, having been interrupted just as she was about to explain that these were the three types of fish that could be found in the lake, that the trahira is rarely seen, though, and that it must be hiding under the mud because if it comes out the tilapia eats it. And again she was interrupted: - Well, I know nothing about fish names. I don't like fish, don't like cleaning them, don't like the smell - retorted Miguel, in contrast with his usual reticence when finishing a statement, which -Eva knew- meant that the subject of tilapia, trahira and angelfish had not been a success either... Previously she'd tried to say that she preferred it when the women would wash their clothes at the edge of the lake, before they built that communal laundry back there -that it was more beautiful the way things used to be. But it had been to no avail... It was therefore useless to try and change the subject. Now that he had started, Miguel was going to repeat that story of the change
Slowness, no. But not quickness, either. Anyway, when things don't work out, they just don't. Look, it's bleeding again, see. It's really hurting. If you play on it the wound could get even worse, right? So, look, let's do this... We'll make a substitution, put on Toninho... Alright? - OK, it's no big deal. Not slowness, no: it's how fast that thought came into his head. Not fast, no: it's his tardiness in leaving the field. Tardiness, no: it's the speed with which he pretended he didn't mind being substituted in today's game, the semifinal of the tournament here at the beach. Not speed, no, my friends: it's his slowness in coming to terms with what happened whenever he'd got close to signing with a big team. Not slowness, no: it's the speed of what he didn't want to think about, being thought of in his own mind and that it's always like this, it's always when he really wants something: "I don't need reminding, Lord no! I know I don't have the right." Not quick, no, like I said: it's the slow motion of so many pens failing to sign so many contracts. Not slowness, no; it's the speed with which so many big-team presidents
pretend he didn't want the things he most wanted, because everyone knows he's only foolinghimself. Not slowness, no; it's the speed with which the waves break. Not quickness, no: it's the slowness.
LAPA: OUTBOUND 0919 - RETURN That Nininha was a girl, everyone already knew. What nobody knew was the extent to which her armpits sweated. How she sweated and how she felt ashamed every time she took the bus back from school... It was nearly always the one with that conductor, who stared at her so much it was as if he was going to devour her with his eyes! It was better if she keep quiet so as not to draw anyone else's attention! When she got home she would take a deep breath out of relief. She was positively afraid of that man who liked to look her up and down... And so dirty! He looked like a... I don't know what! To even think that she was the kind of girl to lead on a man like that! He looked like he didn't even wash himself! Good grief! The following day Nininha left with a classmate and they both took the bus. It wasn't the same conductor conductor.. - What's the matter, Nininha, aren't you coming through? -said her friend, having already gone through the turnstile. - Damn! I can't find my smartcard! I think I've lost it!- replied Nininha, rummaging in her shoulder bag. - What a pain! And now? - I'll have to walk home, I guess. I haven't got the money to pay the full fare. - No! What are you saying? You're going to walk all that way? I'll lend you the money -you can pay me back tomorrow! - No, it doesn't matter, really. Leave it, I'll go on foot! And Nini nha go t off the bu s so q uickly that her fri end ha rdly ha d the time to sti ck her head out of the window while the bus pulled off: - Don't be silly, Nininha! Just because you forgot your smartcard?! But Nininha didn't go on foot. Within fifteen minutes another bus came. She signaled for it to stop, got on, recognized the conductor that always stared at her -with the hungry eyes-, took the smartcard from inside her notebook, put it in the machine, the light went on. Then she paid her reduced fare with some change, taking each coin, one by one from the tight pocket of her jeans... ...and sat down in her usual place...
RIO VERMELHO:
VERMELHO RIO
When Jorge arrived he gave Sr. Eulírio a strong handshake... He hadn't put on sunglasses when he left the home where he'd set up a small textile business with his wife...
When Jorge left he gave Sr. Eulírio a weak handshake... But why had he not worn sunglasses? His facial muscles were already hurting from squinting so much...
He told his wife that he'd asked for a predated check from Sr. Eulírio; that their business was now getting off the ground! Walking towards the fishermen's community center, he hadn't even noticed if anyone was there at the entrance... It seemed to him that the only one there was Dum, sitting on a step.
How was he going to tell his wife that he hadn't got the check? That the business was going to stay in the red? Now it became clear there were three men at the entrance -as well as Dum, there were another two, sitting down. No, it's not a step... It's that thing that looks like a mast on a boat.
But it was as if he'd met Dum just a couple of minutes before, not two days before, when Dum had told him that Sr. Eulírio needed nine thousand T-shirts to give away at the Festival of Yemanjá. When he passed by Dum he had the impression that Dum was standing up to say something... "I wanted... the deal... tell you..."
And it was as if he hadn't seen Dum for several years, as if he didn't even know Dum, as if Dum had never told him that Sr. Eulírio needed nine thousand T-shirts to give away at the Festival of Yemanjá. When he passed by Dum, Dum stood up to say: "I tried to warn you, but your cellphone would only say 'out of range'..."
He kept staring at the door of the fishermen's community center while Dum was saying something about a cellphone... And whil e he was shaki ng Sr. Eulírio's hand, he wondered what Sr. Eulirio could be talking about... Something about the check... Why is he not signing the check? He's saying something about the festival... About T-shirts here and T-shirts there... Let's leave it there... Leave what, where? It seemed that only now could he hear Sr. Eulírio's voice:
He kept staring at the floor, remembering that his son Raul always forgot to turn his cellphone on. And while he walked towards the busstop he realized that the sunlight wasn't as strong as when he'd left home, that it was the intensity of the gray sky that made his eyes feel like they were fit to burst... He could have sworn he'd only raised the price a little to get the business out of a hole -and meanwhile he continued to listen to Sr. Eulírio's voice: - ... and we've managed to find a better - ... and we've managed to find a better deal... Don't take it badly, but considering deal... Don't take it badly, but considering the price difference we've opted for another the price difference we've opted for another guy to make the T-shirts for the Festival, and guy to make the T-shirts for the Festival, and
FAROL DA BARRA, FORTE DE SANTA MARIA, FORTE DE SÃO DIOGO: THE VIGILANT ARMIES. So many Forts to defende us. So much cannon fire, musket shots and arrows, the Sky ablaze. 'Twas here I set foote hauing nauigated the wide Ocean. These shores I defended in the name of the King. And he re is where I fell, my hea rte rent a sunder. That many shots did it take to kill me and there poured forth so much crimson I doth pronounce the inhabitantes of this lande to be baptized in Bloode. Soldiers each and euery one, those who descended into the grave and those who stoode fast. Yet this Spectre of mine remaineth, that like thin Aire confuseth mere mortals. Canst thou hear me utter these words? 'Tis not the Wynde that doth speak. 'Tis not necessary to flee, nor feare shall struck thee dumb. Entertaineth the notion that we are but one, true not in outward appearance but in Bloode and Spirit and everlasting Flame. May such abundant life-giving Waters, silence the lightening and the pyrotechnics.
CAMPO GRANDE: SHATTERING SUNLIGHT Sr. Francisco turned into Avenida Sete de Setembro donning the same gray three-piece suit he wore every Wednesday. The sunlight was still intense, but in the shade it was cooler. He crossed the street, took out his handkerchief and wiped the sweat that dampened his collar. The sweat was due to the long walk he'd taken from Rua ???, where he lived, and its drops mixed with the rose-water he'd carefully applied to his body after taking a bath. He put away his handkerchief, walked up to the plastic seat beside Armandinha's stall and there he sat, without saying a word, almost smiling.
- I don't know why you don't come on the bus. You always walk, and in this heat! Sr. Francisco just nodded his head. He didn't have a right answer to give as to why he would never take a bus. He only knew that he didn't like to get on at the front and show his senior citizen pass... Dona Armandinha also smiled, prompted by this weekly meeting, which was now no longer considered a bad thing within her household. Not even by her children, who now thought it funny when she was getting dressed up and would say: "let me go now, because my 'companion' will soon be there". - What about the children? - They're all fine... Ricardo is coming next week, with the kids... - Is he coming alone? - No, he'll come with his wife and the kids... Sr. Francisco made a gesture meaning that he'd now understood. It's just that, lately, he'd been missing the odd phrase... They didn't know why, but since they'd started meeting... How long had they been doing this? "My God! As long as that? Nearly the age of Ricardo's little daughter..." Dona Armandinha told herself, amaz ed, realizing that ever since she had become a widow... It didn't surprise her that previously her children would get angry, nor that people in the neighborhood would spread idle gossip even though there was nothing between her and Francisco... These people who have nothing better to do, who... And Francisco continued… he had less and less patienc e with sitting on a bus... He felt that everybody was looking at him... Occasionally young men… For some time he hadn't wanted to face any young person. He couldn't exactly say why... He felt, well, somehow ashamed, not knowing for sure of what. He preferred to go on foot. He didn't have the patience for it! Dona Armandinha dipped the spoon into each acarajé pan and scooped out a spoonful of filling to deposit into the half-opened bean-croquette... First the vatapá, then the shrimps, then the vinaigrette salad... Francisco had always been like that, hasty, with no patience for anything -unlike herself, who knew how to do everything in due course, at the right moment. Even with popcorn -she would eat them one by one... - Popcorn reminds me of movie theaters... - It's been an age since I've been to the movies... - I'm tired of asking! You never want to go... - Come off it, Francisco! Me? Go to the movies? - What's so wrong? - Oh, no… - We could go and watch a movie… - I don't like theaters. - A movie… - I don't like movies! - she retorted. Sr. Francisco laughed.
- There's no accounting for taste... And to watch that rubbish... - I even go to the 'shoppy' mall… - I know… I know only too well… As if you were some young thing… - I'm no youngster, but I'm not dead either. So why not! I pop into all of those 'shoppy' malls that we now have in town. I just enjoy the air-conditioning, I go up and down, window-shopping... Then I go into one of those theaters... Some terrific movies really, you should see... And then silenc e. The sile nce of this movies conversati on... The silence that fell every week, until Dona Armandinha would say something about prices, the city council, the children... And why does Francisco have to talk so much about the movies? And so, for several minutes, there they were, Armandinha selling one acarajé here, another there... Only this time it happened earlier than usual... It was when she was about to put the vinaigrette salad on the acarajé a customer had ordered that Francisco, over the innumerable cobblestones, broke the silence: - It's because my wife arrived at that very moment, Armanda… The spoon that stirred the vinaigrette salad stopped. - With that damned friend of hers… The spoon in the vinaigrette salad remained still, as if there wasn't a customer there, waiting. - I… It's that my wife was there with that dreadful friend of hers... The customer waited, while Armanda crossed those arms that had once opened for the man who'd gone to buy a bag of popcorn before the show started at Cine Jandaia and who then went away with his wife. She bought a bag of popcorn for herself and took the streetcar to go home, eating the popcorn piece by piece, feeling empty inside. After that she didn't respond to that man's messages anymore, got married to another, became the mother of first Ricardo, then Júlia, Davi and Fábio, who was stillborn. She became a grandmother, then a widow... She started taking care of the acarajé-stall of her daughter who took a course every Wednesday. And there she stood, while the customer waited. She wasn't surprised when Francisco started to appear on the days she was there, all dressed up -"at our age nothing surprises anymore!"... It was only so they could chat, to say that he had become a widower too, that his children all live away, one in Paraná, another in Rio de Janeiro... to remember times passed, the old days, Palm Sunday. But it was not to remind me of that day, Francisco. We're too old for such things. -Come to the movies with me, Armanda. What was it that the customer said before going away, without taking the acarajé? - Let's go...? The wooden spoon slowly stirred the vinaigrette salad and, without any hurry, she took some, and filled the acarajé croquette with it. - I don't go to movie theaters anymore, Francisco... I don't like movies anymore.
PRAÇA CASTRO ALVES: ILIAD No, don't ask for my hand, Irã. Keep that hand of yours there, leave it in your pocket! You're acting like an idiot! You're so persistent, you're always on my case! Is this gonna happen every day now? Leave me alone!... My 'saint' conflicts with yours, my sweet -man can't go against that which an orixá forbids. Keep your hand in your pocket, don't take it out for me. I... I'm ready to start another novena! My family liked the fact that I managed to cleanse myself of you. Even my brother is happier about it all, as it's clear to everyone I forgot about you a long time ago. My Pai de Santo said it's a non-starter, us being together, and my friends haven't talked about you for ages: when someone mentions you it's like asking about someone who's "passed away"...! You may as well be dead, Irã! So, don't you go offering that hand of yours, keep it in your pocket. Don't keep asking for my hand, Irã, because I won't give it you! I'm not gonna give it you ever again. I won't give it you, Irã... Never again...
