Abstract

The main objective of this paper was to find out whether the children are getting enough opportunities for their refreshment. As nowadays there is a shortage of fields and playground, how the children would like to pass their pastime. Resulted from the shortage of enough playgrounds or fields, children like to spend their pastime at home playing computer games or doing nothing. Because their mental and physical ph ysical growth are related with their recreation in the outside world like playing with friends in the playground or in the field. My general hypothesis was what the people of our country or the government can do to ensure proper opportunities which can help h elp the children to play regular outdoor games. In order to determine whether the children were getting the proper opportunities or are they playing regular outdoor games, a quantitative survey was conducted over 15 respondents including male and female parents. The results of the survey illustrate that indeed in some ways the children are not getting proper or enough opportunities for their growth which is related with playing outdoor games as a result children are passing their time playing computer games or getting addicted toward modern gadgets like mobile phone, tablets etc. However, the importance of playing regular outdoor games must no t be neglected as it has a very positive effect toward a child’s mental or physical development.

Introduction

Ours is a globalization era. Thus this globalization may have benefitted us in many ways but it also has its harmful effects on mankind. The world is getting smaller by globalization, this planet of ours is getting narrower. It has given us many wonderful gifts like the people of our world have come closer, one can contact other or see other from one part of the world to another. The technological advancement is the major key for which today the world has become smaller, one of the best gifts of technological advancement is the Computer. At present with globalization, the population of our planet is increasing rapidly. In order to make shelter for the increasing population the land space is decreasing, as a result the places of hanging out and playing outdoor games for little children’s are decreasing.

There was a time back in the 90’s when there was no computer or modern gadgets available in every house in our country, back then the kids of the 90’s would simply love playing outdoor games. Outdoor games can be referred to as playing outside the house, it can be played within the free space in front of the house or in the b ackyard, though playing in the fields or pla yground were popular too but as time passed the amount of population in our country raised so rapidly that the amount of free or vacant space which were used previously as a playing ground began to decrease gradually. Outdoor games were favorite choice of every children, the most popular outdoor games

were Kabbaddi, Chor-police, Hide and seek known as borof pani in Bangla, Lattu. Back then the popular indoor games was carom, shap-shiri, ludu and many other games. Children who aged 1014, among them playing cricket or football was popular too.

In the scenario of urban areas in our country, back in the 90’s playing ludu or carom in the house with their parents or friends were their favorite pastime activity. Some of the children also used to play outside because there were an abundant amount of playgrounds which were up to the mark of proper environment quality and surroundings.

This study is designed to determine whether in this era of globalization, whether the children are treated in the right way to play in the grounds or they should play in house games such as com puter game or others. To accomplish this purpose, I conducted a survey with 15 random parents which I found over several grounds in our city including both ma le and female respondents which helped me to fulfill my research objective.

Background

According to the Bangladeshi culture and the tradition of Bangladesh, the people and the children are tend to be very nature loving, they loved to roam around in the rural areas and discover the natures blessing. The children in the rural areas were found on the ground beside the school or house playing various kinds of traditional game like Kabbaddi, Kanamachi, and Doribandha etc. But as the time passed they got pretty much city centered, moving to the cities and having the lacking of proper environment they turned to home centered, they started playing in house games such as chess, carom etc. It is very important for a generation to adapt with the environmental surrounding which includes playing in the grounds or the fields. There is a significance difference between the urban and rural environment but that doesn’t mean that children should be only sitting home and playing computer and other sorts of indoor games. Author and clinical psychologist Jamison K.R. (2010) said that “Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.” It is through unstructured, open-ended creative play that children learn the ways of the world. While playing outside children explore with all their sense, they witness new life, they create imaginary worlds and they negotiate with each other to create a playful environment. (p. 2). According to Shaw G.B (2012) “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing”. It doesn’t matter if you grow old or not, your inactivity is your indicator of aging. When people have increased physical activity level they stay refreshed and they are focused on whatever they are doing. He has encourage all the people from all the age groups to be physically active by doing playing, working so that he or she doesn’t feel the age. (p. 4).

A journalist from prothom-alo stated about the rising rate of child obesity noticed in the urban area of Bangladesh, According to Alam S.S (2015) “A total of 40,349 under-five children were enrolled in the surveillance system at ICDDR,B’s Dhaka Hospital and Matlab field sites between 1993 and 2012.” The emerging epidemic of childhood obesity is mainly attributed to dietary and lifestyle modification especially in urban areas. The reason b ehind this obesity: According to World Health Organization (WHO), children must play sweaty outdoor games at least an hour every day. The urban children of Dhaka, however, do not get the opportunity to play outside due to lack of playgrounds in schools and housing complexes. There are only 11 playgrounds in both Dhaka south and north city corporations' comman d areas and many of them do not have facilities for playing. And, so majority of the urban kids spend their time watching television and playing video games.

Another interesting facts about the children in Bangladesh is that 15 million children live in city slums, Some 50 percent of children under age 5 are malnourished in Bangladesh, 500,000 to 2 million children live as street children. So having these facts the government is much busy to establish proper children right rather than making opportunity for them.

Research Questions

Everything which is concerned about the development of child’s mental and physical growth and the possible reasons behind their addictiveness of modern gadgets should be analyzed and verified thoroughly. As I have stated earlier that playing outside on the grounds have a positive effect on their growth. In order, to conduct my research I decided to thoroughly investigate the fact s and the effects of not playing outside with transparency and clarity. Some of my survey questions included:



Do the children in our country, plays in the playground or they don’t?



Is there a sufficient amount of fields or playground available in every area of our country?



How parents can ensure their children’s regular outdoor gaming?



Is the playground or field up to the standard for a children to play?



Who is the key player to ensure the children right to play outside games, parents or the government?

Hypothesis

Generally, the parents in our country are not so concerned about their children if they are playing some sort of games in the field or they are just spending their time playing computer games. As most parents in the urban areas are engaged with their work or business activities so they have little time to care about what their children are doing in their pastimes. I believe that playing outside games have many positive effect toward a child’s mental or physical growth, and if the children’s were practiced playing outside from their early age they would have simply loved the nature and playing many different sorts of games. If one doesn’t go to the field or playground how they could ever understand why it is more fun or more beneficial to play outside. I gave the parents some of the situations which is causing this problem at this time regarding their responsibility toward their children. Which can help my research to find out the proper steps which can be taken to create more opportunities for the children. From the parents detailed opinion, I’ve put myself in that situation to find out what the real problems are and analyze the problems that lead to find the solution of all problems.

Research Methodology

For my primary research, I conducted a survey using a questionnaire. I distributed my questionnaires among a group of random parents including male and female which were found in local areas in my city. For my secondary research, I collected information from a wide array of books, periodical and other relevant supplementary materials and the World Wide Web. I have also used various sources e.g. articles, blogs, journals, database, academic websites.

Limitations

There are some limitations that I’ve faced to do this research paper. For this limitations, I’ve failed to write a constructive research paper. Limitations are: 

Time limitation: I’ve to complete this paper in a short time. That’s why, I could not do more research on this topic.



Sample Size: My sample size were moderate because there wasn’t enou gh parents to answer my questions I was seeking. If I can conduct a survey with a large number of parents then maybe I’ll get more accurate results regarding the missing opportunities of children.



People’s attitude: Most of the parents were not so friendly to answer to my questions. They were not so helpful to give detailed information to me. Some people even didn’t read the whole options of the survey questions.

Data presentation and analysis

In order to collect sufficient data about the missing oppo rtunities of children which is causing them from not going outside to play games I hosted a survey questioning on various aspects on my topic. The Data collected helped me to draw conclusion about my research topic. The questions were completed by random parents which consists of 15 parents among them 6 were female and 9 male. The data collected is presented and analyzed below: In my first question, I asked the parents about their children if they like to play outside in the field or they like to play in house games such as playing computer games. This was a general question which can be answered by any parent but surprisingly most of the parents were kind of in a dilemma that in which manner they should answer. The results were as expected. Approximately 60% of the parents answered that their children likes to pass their leisure hours in the home playing computer games or mobile games. 20% of them answered that their children wants to go to playground but there is no playground available in their area. 15% of them answered their child likes to play outside games with their friends and 5% was reported that the parents could not make time for their kids to take them out. A pie chart representing the data is given in Figure.1

In my second question, I asked them about if there was sufficient amount of playgrounds available in their area. The results I got from them as follows, 4 0% of them answered that There is only one playground in the area, 30% answered that by building new complexes or markets they don’t have any playground available now, 20% has answered that they have two playground or more for the playing purpose of children, lastly 10% has answered a part from having a playground they don’t have open space to take a walk. A doughnut graph represents this answer in Figure 2.

In the third question I wanted to seek how the parents can mak e sure that their children’s go out in the playgrounds to play outdoor games. The answer I got is followed by, 50% answered that they can take their children on the playground with themselves on a regular basis, 40% answered that they can only make sure that as they get free time on the weekend so they can take their children in the ground only in the weekends. 10% replied to my question that they can reschedule their daily routine to make time for their children. On the aspect of hiring someone else to take their children on the ground on behalf them there was no answer. A pie chart representing these data’s on figure 3:

In my fourth question, I tried to seek if the if the playgrounds are up to the standard of playable for the children. The answer I got was, 80% said that the playground lacks of proper quality and 20% said the playgrounds had proper environment. This answer is represented by the pie chart as follows:

My last question was the most important question regarding the purpose of my research that who is most responsible for ensuring more opportunities or creating more playgrounds for the children. Who are the main key players on the aspects of making more opportunities by which the children can avoid playing in house games and they can be more eager to play outside games. 70% of the respondents said that government is the only one who can create or make more opportunities by which the children would like to play on the outdoors. 30% of the respondents said not only government but the parents themselves can play a major role in the development of their own children. Summary of research findings

After analyzing the survey results I found that the main reason why children’s don’t play outdoors game is that there is no sufficient playgrounds or fields for the children. There is a small amount of playground and they are not also in good quality even they lack of proper environment quality too as the playgrounds or the fields have lack of proper environment quality, some parents don’t want their children to play out side in the playground. They want to make sure that if there is more substantial amount of playground which has proper quality their children could have been more interested to play in the fields. In my hypothesis, I believe that pla ying outside games have many positive effect toward a child’s mental or physical growth. But after analyzing m y survey I have found that most of the children also can’t play outdoor games because of there is less security available for them, even there is a less pressure from their parents but the children’s themselves do not want to go out. The survey also helps me to know that some parents want that their children should play outdoor game on daily basis for their mental and physical growth. So parents also give a common opinion that the Government should play an important role to secure proper environment quality for the better development of the children and make some quality playgrounds in every area. While doing my survey based on the questionnaire, I got so many reviews from the parents and general public, I’ve found that unavailability of space, no government approach, and infrastructure under development, lack of facilities are the main problem for the children. This is why number of children playing on the grounds are decreasing every year.

Recommendations

During the research I had several limitations which need to be addressed. I had limited time period in which I had to complete all the stages of this research. So I could not address all the reason behind why children would like to play regular outdoor games rather than playing computer games. What are the major steps could be taken to prevent children staying and playing computer games in the house, the possible recommendations I would like to state is that, the parents should be more responsible toward their children as they should monitor them very closely, at least 3 times a week the y should be able to take their children to the park or fields. The Public health organization of our country should come up with strong points regarding present lacking of children turnover from playing in the grounds. There should be a committee monitoring that every area should sufficient amount of playground with proper quality. Moreover, the survey would have been more successful if I could talk with some more parents and take their opinion over the matter, it could be also helpful if I could interview some government personnel in the administration of public health and how are they thinking to solve this problem.

Conclusion

In conclusion, from the outcome of the research it would not be outrageous to say that indeed in the 90’s where kids aged 6 to 15 were found on the fields or the grounds in the evening but sadly in this technological advanced era many of the children are found on the house playing computer games or watching animated cartoons while few a re found on the ground playing regular outdoor games. This transformation of children playing indoor rather than outdoor has many far affecting consequences which no one cannot deny of, The children today who is sitting on the house rather than playing outside are causing themselves a serious harm, they are getting exposed to greater risk that they cannot even think of. As todays children’s are future leader they are lacking in leadership quality, their brain is developing slowly, lacking in p ersistence even they will lack in physical activity level. The long time computer gaming or watching movies can cause serious eyes and brain damage to the children. However the government and the parents both has to play a very important role in order to bring back those lost children who were on ce found playing in the playgrounds.

For my primary research I will conduct a survey on both the children’s and their parents that what are their viewpoint upon these issues.
