Earthworks Quantities and Mass-Haul Diagram Introduction Earthwork for any road construction like (railway, landing and different types of highway) involves excavation and movement of o f a portion of the earth's surface from one location to another. Earthwork in a new position is an embankment being formed and created into a desired shape and physical grade formation or disposed of as spoil. Excavation of earth material is the removal of the layer of soil immediately under the topsoil and on top of rock for grade formation. Earth material is usually used to construct embankments and foundations and can be easily moved with scrapers or other types of earthmoving equipment for grade formation. Excavation of topsoil is the removal of the exposed layer of the earth's surface, including vegetation. ock excavation is the removal of a formation that cannot be excavated excav ated without drilling and blasting.
