Chapter I The Problem and Its Scope
Title: Bamboo Innovation Center: The Reinvigoration of the Domestic Bamboo Industry
Introduction
In today’s highly competitive economy, innovation is more critical than ever. The need to innovate arise to protect industries against eternal threats, eplore different avenues, see! ne" inspiration, and create ne" competitive advantage #$olis, %&'(). *o"ever, the lac! of facility to venture ne" concepts possess a threat to many good inventions and ideas of potential commercial value that can easily be stolen, eploi eploited ted and ta!en ta!en to other other contet contet "here "here people people can claim claim their their origin originali ality ty and intellectual property. +hilippines is dubbed as the regenerating ground for the unsung inventors of the modern times.- ur country have its bountiful resources and people "ith original and brilliant ideas but do not have technical epertise to conceptuali/e them. Innovation centers should therefore assist such people to turn their ideas into reality. It is a vital venue to cultivate people’s ideas to help develop local industries, "hich in return create a positive impact on the economic development, creating 0obs and generating "ealth for the inventors and innovators. 1oreover, reali/ing the need to motivate a culture of invention and innovation, these centers can also be a place to develop develop competitive competitive thin!ing by activities activities such as competitions and a"ard schemes "hich provide a good platform to stimulate people’s eagerness, a"areness, and involvement.
Rationale
ver the years, bamboo has been one of the natural resources of the tropics, and because of its "ide distribution, availability, rapid gro"th, easy handling and desirable properties, it has been "ell used in the daily life of the local community for a "ide range of purposes. It is not only used as construction material but it is also indispensable to the food, music, medical, and tetile industry. Despite the challenges, the +hilippines is the fifth top bamboo eporter in the "orld net to China, 2uropean 3nion, Indonesia, and 4ietnam. Its total eports of bamboo reaches about 56& million annually, "hich represents a mere '& percent of "hat the 3$, the "orld’s leading bamboo importer, buys annually from China, "hich amounts to about 56&& million #$unstar Davao, %&'7). 8legria is one of the municipality situated in the southern part of Cebu "hich rely on bamboo as one of their basic source of livelihood and income aside from farming and fishing. 9oven bas!ets, hats and home decors are some of their bamboo products that can be sold locally and even internationally. *o"ever, domestic mar!et for bamboo in the municipality "ill not be enough to boost the industry’s full potential. To meet the gro"ing needs and demands of a highly competitive economy, there is a need to innovate. The beauty of bamboo has been seen but the lac! of facility to eplore allo"ing much more innovative ideas and moving for"ard bamboo as a modern- material is the main problem. Therefore, an innovation center for bamboo is then needed to revolutioni/e and reinvigorate the domestic bamboo industry by providing a venue for research and development of people’s innovative ideas.
