Make sure that the shafts carrying sprockets are parallel.
Align the sprockets exactly on the
shafts. Check with a string held against the sides of the sprocket face. Improper alignment of shaft/sprocket will cause abnormal wear on the chain link plates and on the sides of the sprocket teeth. Check whether the sprocket and shaft operate freely. The chain must be clean and free from grit and dirt. The chain should articulate freely. Ensure that the chain parts are not damaged. After removing the connecting link wrap the chain around the sprocket, bringing the free ends together on one sprocket. Insert the pins of the connecting link into the end links of the chain, install the loose plate and then fix the spring clip. The open end of the spring clip should be facing the direction opposite to the direction of rotation. Adjust the tension in the chain by moving the rear wheel using the adjuster provided. To check the chain tension turn the wheel to tighten the upper strand of the chain, then check the free up and down movement in the bottom strand of the chain. A free play up and down of 1/2” to 3/4” is recommended, and should be adjusted with a rider on the machine. Check again and ensure that the wheel shaft is parallel to the gear sprocket shaft. The drive must have adequate clearance. When the chain case is used, the drive must be positioned correctly so that there is no obstruction in the path of the chain
10
The chain should be lubricated at frequent intervals. Even under the best operating conditions it is advisable to clean the chain every 3000 km. The frequency of cleaning should be increased in case there is no chain guard. The roller chain may be cleaned by washing in kerosene. Articulate or agitate the chain to ensure penetration of kerosene and a thorough flushing of the pin bushing areas. Drain off the excess kerosene and then soak the chain in SAE 40 oil to restore the internal lubrication. Hang the chain to drain off all the excess lubricant. If necessary, gently wipe the outside of the chain to remove excess oil which will only attract dust and dirts. Similarly, clean sprockets with kerosene and inspect them for wear and corrosion. Refit the chain on the sprocket taking care that steps described earlier are followed.
Never insert a new link in a chain that has been appreciably elongated by wear. The pitch of the new link will be shorted than that of other links, and the resulting shock each time the link engages the sprocket will soon destroy the chain. Do not install a new chain on a badly worn out sprocket. A few hours of operation under such a condition will do more damage to the chain than months of normal use.
