Preface
To allow continuous enhancement of our products, we need to know how they perform in daily operation, whether and what types of faults occur and what the causes are. Only you can provide us with this information because you are in closest contact with our products on a practical day-to-day basis in the field. To ensure that we receive standardized information on faults in the field, we have prepared a set of codes covering possible fault/damage types. This allows computer-aided storage and quick and reliable analysis. Please familiarize yourself in detail with this system and its operation and use it consistently when submitting warranty claims. Please bear in mind that the information you provide is vital for our R&D work and that it also contributes to maintaining the quality advantage of our products. Ultimately, it is this superior quality which will ensure the continued sales success of our products and thus the success of your own company. MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH
Structure and management of the Damage Code Catalog
The Damage Code consists of ten digits. These consist of the function group (FG), function group segment (FGS), item number and damage type (Defect type). XXX XX XX XXX XXX
XXX XX XX XXXXX XXX XXXXXXX
Function group (FG) Damaged part (Defective part) FG segment (FGS) Item number Damage type (Defect type)
When assigning a code to damage, a code must be assigned to the part that has caused the damage. Where a flywheel has become fouled with oil due to a defective rotary shaft oil seal unit, a code must be assigned to “Rotary shaft oil seal unit not tight” for the crankshaft seal, and not, for example “Flywheel fouled with oil”. 1. Damaged part The function group, the function group segment (FGS) and the serial number form the first seven digits of the Damage Code and designate the damaged part. The total volume of the damaged parts is broken down into individual segments and divided into function groups. This means that damaged electrical, mechanical or hydraulic parts can be combined to reflect the way they work together functionally in the engine. The illustration and the number of the damaged part are shown in the range of functions belonging to it. A summary of the function groups and an alphabetical index are provided in order to facilitate
