Bienvenido Lumbera is Lumbera is a Filipino poet, critic and dramatist. Personal life !m%era was %orn i n !ipa on April &&, &&, &'(). *&+ He was %arely a year old when his fathers, "hristian !m%era a -hooting ard with a local %asket%all team/, fell from a frit tree, %roke his %ack, and died. "armen !m%era, his mother, sffered from cancer and died a few years later. $y the age of fi#e he was an orphan. He and his older sister were cared for %y their paternal grandmother, 0se%ia 1er. When the war ended, !m%era and his grandmother retrned to their home in !ipa. 0se%ia, howe#er, soon sccm%ed to old age and he was once again orphaned. For his new gardians, he was asked to choose %etween his maiden ants with whom his sister had stayed or 0nri2e and Amanda !m%era, his godparents. 1he latter had no children of their own and $ien#enido, who was %arely forteen at the time, says he chose them mainly %ecase 3they cold send me to school.3
