BOOKBINDING SOME MATERIALS & SUPPLIES BOOK GLUE
There are two general kinds The Ready mixed – need not be cooked. It is • prepared for immediate use. This is sold by the the drum. The Hard or Flake – is prepared by cooking it in • double boiler. This is sold by grams or kilos. Book glue has been used by many binders it contains some chemical solutions added to make it permanently flexible.

BOARDS
Boards are many kinds. Some are being described straw board or binders board and chip board. The
as
standard size is 26” x 38”. Thickness is determined
by 30,
the number of its gauge such as numbers 20, 25, 40, 60 etc. The lesser the number the thicker the gauge, and the greater the number the thinner the gauge.
GLACE THREAD
It is a special kind of thread used for sewing stitches. There are two kinds of thread, namely cotton and linen. It is usually left twisted. Suggested gauge of thread thread for for stitching ordinary books size is number 30. And for stitching heavy and bulky magazines and other stationaries number 20 or 10 is recommended.
HEAD BAND
Head band is a narrow decorative strip of cloth glued on the back of a book at the head and the tail. It is used to protect and beautify the book. Book in any form should be provided with a head band so that its life can be preserved.
SUPER
It is reinforcement material glued along the back of a book to make the section rigid. It may be sinamay, bandage gauze, kraft paper or bond paper. It reinforces the end leaves of a book so they will not give way from constant opening.
NEEDLE
It is a narrow taper with a hole provided in in one end where to insert the thread. This is commonly used for sewing cloth. Medium size are preferably used for beginners of stitching books.
TRIMMER
This is a device used for trimming the the three sides of a book and other materials in binding. It maybe automatic, manual or improvised
STANDING PRESS
It is a device used for pressing books that have been glued to its new case. Books are usually arranged and clamped securely so that the book glued will be pressed evenly.
LETTERING PALLET
This is a special device hand type holder for stamping the label of books. Types used maybe the type of stamping machines but need not be heated. Just use ink for printing the label.
SEWING FRAME
This is used for sewing signatures on cords or on tapes. This is very useful to a beginner. It is usually constructed with two vertical studs, one horizontal bar where to attached the cords or tapes and one base wide enough to lay the signatures to be sewed.
BINDER’S BRUSH
This is special type of brush. Generally Generally binders brush is round and made to resist enough to serve the purpose.
STAMPING MACHINE
This is a machine intended intended for printing the label of a book cover newly made. However, printing label should be made first before assembling or fitting permanently the body of book for convenience. Types are set and heated to a certain degree so that the gold and silver rolls be printed effectively.
