The Duo: Founded in 2012, from two artists’ idea to unite the unique and fascinating sonorities of the viola and the guitar in an ensemble that could ennoble them both, not only through the peculiarities of their timbre but also from the point of view of chamber music, thanks to their natural balance and fusion. This This permits the duo to explore a vast repertoire, from Bach to the contemporaries,
and to appreciate the deepest musical and structural aspects of the works thanks to the instruments’ natural affinity and ability to create a dialogue between themselves. The album: The duo’s first album is dedicated to the works of Paganini, released by Brilliant Classics in January 2015 and which has achieved great critical success (CD of the month in Amadeus, 5 star rating in Archi magazine.) Simone Gramaglia is the violist of the Quartetto di Cremona, with whom he has performed all over the world in the past fifteen years. As a soloist he has performed with various orchestras presenting N. Paganini’s Sonata per la Gran Viola and is considered one of the foremost violists of his generation. Since 2012 he has played in a duet with guitarist Luigi Attademo. Among his other favorite musical collaborators he counts Andrea Lucchesini, Lawrence Dutton and Jamie Walton. His teachers were Mikhail Kugel, Bruno Giuranna and Yuri Bashmet, and he has also taken great inspiration from his friend and mentor Hatto Beyerle. He is a professor of the String Quartet department at the Accademia Stauffer in Cremona and director of the viola and quartet courses at Master4Strings, and holds master classes throughout Europe. He writes the column “Quartet Corner” in Archi Magazine and studies philosophy at the University of Genoa. Considered one of the most important guitarists of his generation, Luigi Attademo began his artistic journey winning third prize at the “Concours International d’Execution Musicale” in Geneva in 1995. Born into the school of guitarist-composer Angelo Gilardino, he counts Giovanni Guanti, Julius Kalmar, Alessandro Solbiati and Emilia Fadini among his teachers. He earned his degree in Philosophy with a thesis on musical interpretation, has published various articles on musicological and aesthetic themes, collaborated with specialized journals and presented his work on Italy’s Radio3 and Radio Toscana Classica. He has recorded 10 CD’s, among them albums dedicated to the Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, to J.S. Bach, to original manuscripts found in the Segovia Archive and to the Quintets of Luigi Boccherini. He dedicates most of his musical activities to monograph projects, among them his recent recording of the complete Suites for Lute by J.S. Bach (2011, Brilliant Classics) and a project on Paganini and contemporary music (performed so far in Berlin, Vienna, New York and at the 2012 MiTo Festival.) In recent years he has held seminars and concerts at the Royal Academy of Music i n London (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014) at Melbourne University on the repertoire of Andres Segovia (2010), and in 2011 was a guest of the prestigious Festival of the Guitar Foundation of America presenting a program dedicated to music of the Baroque. Among his recent projects are the publication of an anthology and CD of the contemporary music for guitar dedicated to Paganini (Ed. Sinfonica) and the complete works for solo guitar of Niccolo Paganini recorded for the first time in their entirety on a period instrument (Brilliant, 2013.) In 2014 the journal Amadeus dedicated their May issue to him with the publication of a monograph CD on Fernando Sor. He is currently a professor at the ISSM “G. Donizetti” in Bergamo and frequently collaborates with the HEM in Geneva and Lausanne.
