To carry out a complete design of steel structure for an elevated water tank (CO3-PO6). To solve a real engineering problem (CO3-PO6). To demonstrate effective team role and responsibility in the task execution. Be able to present the finding using appropriate method.
Scenario You are a Consultant Engineer in Berjaya Jururunding Sdn. Bhd. and are given a task on structural steel design project. The duty of your team is to provide a complete design of an elevated water tank for water supply to four different residential areas. Figure 1 shows the plan view and Figures 2-3 show the side views of the elevated water tank, respectively. The required length of the primary beams (B1 and B2), secondary beams (B2) and columns (C1 and C2) are as specified Figures 1-3 and Table 1. Also shown in the figures and Table 1 are the height of the water tank (H) and spacing of the secondary beams (s). Calculations for loadings involved are shown in the appendix. Prepare a comprehensive technical report that includes the selection of sizes, list of material properties and design calculations for this project.
Objectives This activity requires your team to analyse the forces acting on the steel structure, do complete analysis and checking in order to propose the suitable sizes for primary and secondary steel beams and column members, and also the beam-column connection design according to EC3.
Assessment Assessment is based on a report writing and oral presentation of the findings. The report must be hand-written on design sheet as given in i-learn. Oral presentation (with slides) must be given in short video. Arrangement of report writing and oral presentation must be in sequence sequence according to the design steps and calculations. Both report (hard copy) and video (soft copy) must be submitted by 25th September 2016 . *Note: Number of group members – 5/6 students
