There are four vertically positioned control valves on the top casing which are operated against individual compression springs to provide failsafe shut down. Each valve controls the steam admission to a first stage nozzle group and can maintain a set pressure at the steam inlet or exhaust. During turbine automatic start, the control valves are partially opened to ensure uniform heating of the casing. This minimises thermal stresses and deformation, to prevent mechanical contact between the rotor and the shaft sealing.
