PRO TIP I always make sure I ascend as far up the neck as I can and then descend all the way back to my starting point. Doing this really makes sure you’re not skipping any element of the warm-up and ensures that you’re warming up your fretting hand in almost every position on the instrument.

PRO TIP Not only is it important to practice this and all musical phrases in all 12 keys, but it’s crucial that you use all four ngers on your fretting hand as starting points. Tis will help you develop a far greater understanding of the ngerboard. Make sure you can play this exercise starting on each nger of your fretting hand. Some positions will make more sense than others, but having all that variety and all those options at your disposal makes a huge di ff erence to your overall ability as a musician. Always try and explore your own ngerings for these exercises—personalize the experience as much as possible!

% the E% % % % three chord tones and a % PRO TIP I recommend adding this one to your warm-up routine. Just ve minutes up and down the neck of the instrument really gives me a sense of where I’m starting my practice routine: It tells me how much I can push from the beginning, or how much I need to take it slowly and build into the intense work. Always be listening to yourself and hearing the feedback your performance is giving you. If you are scu ffing up and making some simple mistakes, there’s a good chance you just need to relax, take the tempo down a little, and start out a lot slower than you think you should.

PRO TIP Te warm-up doesn’t have to be the same diminished chords every time. I’m just trying to start from a relaxed and controlled place, so any simple material will work to populate those early stages of a practice session.

PRO TIP Tere are two basic technical elements to be aware of when playing these exercises. Tey may be very slight in some cases, but they exist nonetheless. 1) When playing in the lower register, the fretting hand is further away from the body, and it’s therefore more technically demanding on the arm and shoulder to continually practice in lower positions. 2) As you get higher up on the neck, the action of your instrument will be higher than in the lower register, so although your fretting is now closer to your body—which relieves stress on the shoulde r and arm—the ngers have to work just a little bit harder to press down the strings and make a good sound.

Pro Tip One of the best ways to create more material for your practice routine from a single melodic phrase is to work it in half steps, whole steps, and minor 3rds around the instrument.

PRO TIP Try using these two triads, D% and E % , over G7, B%min, and D%maj7. And for a maj/min (a minor chord with a major 7) sound, use these same two triads over A%min. Te G natural in the E % triad will give you that maj/min sound on the A%min chord.

PRO TIP I put in some of the hardest work I’ve ever done to get this phrase sounding uid. I started at 60 bpm and stayed there for at least four days before starting to work it up a little faster. Te more control you have of any musical idea at a slow tempo, the easier it’s going to be to execute it at higher tempos. As soon as you think, “I’ve got this,” the likelihood is that you don’t. Te more honest you can be about your playing and ability, the more time you’ll happily dedicate to really getting inside the music and playing to your full potential.
