Blinking ‘IPOT’ It is really interesting how technology and humour could affect people’s perception of certain ideas and relationships. “Ibong Adarna” didn’t seem to be a good story for me until just after I saw the play. I thought it would be dull but I was definitely wrong. I saw a different side of the story; especially because it didn’t use too much deep Filipino. The ‘kilig’ parts were mostly interesting, how they achieved that kind of feeling live. After the play, I even wondered if some of the kisses were intended to be done. I found it illustrating nation, love as what I understand it now, and family. I also enjoyed how they put a bit of modern to it. Being the first play by Dulaang UP that I saw, I was astonished by how they presented it. I thought it would be the story as written on books but adding effects and a lot of humor made it not only fun but energetic. The effects were also made humorous; one example would be while Juan would run, they put shadow effects of trees he crossed and a wandering type of tune. The prominent thing about the play would be how differently they presented it. They took it to a whole new level of interpretation and production. I saw in the play the Filipino definition of family, how parents want to keep their child by their side as much as possible. It showed how closely knit Filipino families are. As an example, the challenges to get the hand of Maria Blanca can be incorporated with how courtship goes traditionally in the Philippines. The jealousy of Pedro was also a Filipino thing to do; we are always jealous. This jealousy leads to almost our favourite thing – gossip. I also saw Filipino on the supernatural things in the novel. The play amazingly pulled it off even they are to the impossible.
Looking on a larger scale, I would say the falling in love part is universal. I think everyone falls for true love; it is part of our nature to have this feeling we cannot fully understand. It showed how different people interpret love. I would also say that ‘jealousy’ is also universal; in the play it was seen between lovers and brothers. It also illustrated the things people can do to achieve their goals for revenge or for attention. The play was full of conflict. Few of these would be: the king being sick, the brothers being jealous, and the different lovers. It was emphasized to show the different relationships inside the story. Of course the characters were presented carefully that the audience can sort the different feelings which contribute to build up of the conflict. Maybe the theme would be love for one’s self, family and realm. The responsibilities passed upon Juan’s shoulder where he’s father, King Fernando had to let him leave again, shows how they love each other so much, but also the responsibility for their land. They also showed how sacrifice is always painful but sometimes we just have to accept that we need to let go. Leonora loved Juan so much that she forgot to love herself more and in the end, just sacrificed her could’ve been happiness. It used modern aspects on the presentation. Shadow effects did much help in having a picture of the scene. Good lighting guided the audience when to focus where. Technical aspects of the play are well organized. The music and songs used were carefully chosen. It added to the feelings the actors illustrated. Even the humour has a modern vibe on it. Having that modern aspect, like Diego being gay-like, made it livelier. The lighted ball as the ‘ipot’ was impressively witty!
The actors did well too; I think the role with the hardest lines is the Adarna. She (there are many female actors in the face of the Adarna) sings everything! With high notes! I have to complement their lovely voices although the very high notes sometimes made the words sound differently. Also, the ‘main’ Juan seemed to have forgotten some of his words on latter part of the play. After watching the play, I found myself regretting not comprehending to what my high school teacher taught about this “Ibong Adarna.” I experienced and earned a new degree of knowledge about the story. It’s not that required novel I have to read and write, it is now a novel featuring some of the Filipino beliefs and traits.
