A Not e About Benef ics and Malef ics
From the table above, you s ee that Jupiter and Venus are called the Greater and Less er Benef ics. T hat is, they are naturally f ort unate planets. They may become unf ort unate, though, depending on the quest ion asked and the hous e they rule. For example, if Jupiter rules the 8t h hous e of death, it may very well not be f or tunat e at all. Similarly, a malef ic (Saturn or Mars) may rule the 11th ho use o f wishes, and may be applying to a sextile with the Ascendant ruler, indicating that the querent will get his wish.
Part of Fortune T his is a point on t he chart, not a planet. It and its dispos itor can signify los t o bjects , money, poss essio ns, and luck. I use it only t o co nf irm answers . I've never had a well-placed POF pro vide a positive answer in itself . Marc Edmund Jones us es t he house location of the POF to sho w (or conf irm) a querent's area of interest.
The Lunar Nodes A "node" is the po int at which a planet cro ss es the eliptic. All planets have no des. I've o nly seen the Moo n's nodes used in horary. T he North Node (also called Caput Draconis, or the Dragon's Head) is considered benef icial, having the nature o f the Jupiter and Venus. Marc Edmund Jones calls t he Nort h Node "a point o f def inite ass ist ance wherever it is f ound," ass uring cooperatio n and smoo th t ransactions in areas ruled by the hous e in which it is f ound. T he North Node is t he Moo n's ascending node. T he Sout h Node, or Cauda Draconis, is the descending node, and is always exactly oppos ite t he North Node. Jones calls t his point an impediment in any horary chart, and shows self - undoing or a lack of common sens e.

Cardinal Signs. Also called "Moveable" signs. Cardinal signs signal initiat ion, beginnings, act ion. A Cardinal Ascendant can show a quick start . Cardinal s igns on all the angles show a sustained, quick movement o f the matter, and a quick resolution. Seasons change with the Cardinal signs. Fixed Signs. T hese represent an est ablished f orce. T hey show stability and roo tedness. Change does no t occur quickly. Prominent f ixed s igns can show that the querent is "dug in," st ubborn, conservative, st able. Ivy Goldst ein- Jacobs on says t hat a f ixed cros s sho ws that "there is no st opping the proceedings." Mutable Signs. Also called "Common" s igns. T hey mark the end of one s eason and the beginning of the next. T hey signal imminent change, f lexibility. Also, inst ability. A mutable cros s signals changeability, or unstable conditions. Questions described by a mixed cross of ten begin in the manner denoted by the mode o f the signs o n the ascendant and 7th ho use, and continue or end in the manner dento ed by the mode o f the s igns on MC and IC.
Sign Rulership and Planet ary Dignity In horary, at least traditional horary, there's much more to Planetary dignity than we typical deal with in contemporary natal astro logy. We'll get t he basics of ess ential dignity o ut o f the way here, though, and go into more detail in a later lesson. The gist, tho ugh, is this: Planets are stro nger-- or more "comf ort able" in so me signs t han ot hers. T he f ollowing table summarizes planetary standing in the s igns. *Jacobso n claims Nept une is exhalted in Gemini, and in its f all in Sagitt arius. *Sylvia DeLong has Neptune exhalted in Cancer, and in it s f all in Capricorn. **DeLong has Pluto exhalted in Cancer, and in its f all in Capricorn. Generally speaking, in horary charts planets ref lect the debilitated s tat e o f that which they represent. When a well-digif ied planet represents the querent, f or instance, it can show t hat he is healthy, held in high est eem, or able to accomplish his goals: he is "well- pos itio ned." Well dignif ied planets can conf irm a pos itive answer. A poo rly dignif ied planet, say, represent ing the quesited, can sho w that what t he seeker hopes f or will f all short o f his expectations, or f or s ome reason ought not be pursued.
Example Here's an example in which the quesited's ruler is poo rly dignif ied. T he chart was cast in the Koch hous e syst em. There is no agreement bet ween t he planetary hour ruler and the Ascendant, so whether t he chart is valid is arguable. I had the querent's natal chart, though, and saw that the planetary hour ruler matched the natal Ascendant ruler-- not in itself a compelling sign o f validity. But the ho rary Ascendant adequately describes the querent, who is bookish and until very recently worked as a teacher. I decided to read the chart. T he Querent is ruled by Mercury, and co- ruled by the Moon. The quesited-- the job- - is a 10th ho use matter. With Aquarius on the 10th, Saturn rules the job. In Koch, the Moon is in the 10th. The angles are mixed, with mutable signs o n the Asc/desc., and f ixed signs o n the MC/IC. T his s uggest s that the querent is currently in a period o f transit ion that will resolve itself in some manner of increased st ability. T he Moo n's last major aspect was a sextile to Saturn, which in this chart rules the 8th, 9th, and 10th houses. Recently, he quit his ob t eaching to move t o anot her st ate, where his wif e was of f ered an excellent jo b oppor tunity. A longdistance move is apt 9t h hous e symbolism. T he Moo n's next major aspect is a sextile to Mercury, natural ruler of tes ts . He would so on be taking the writt en exam f or t he law enf orcement job, and the sextile
suggests he will do well. (He did, scoring 100%). He is concerned that past health problems will auto matically disqualify him f rom t he race, even tho ugh his health now is excellent; t his is what mot ivated him to ask a horary quest ion. T hat Saturn is in the 12th hous e of hos pitalizat ion conf irms t hat, at the very least, the people in a position to give him a job will be concerned about his past problems. Mercury is dignif ied by term, but weak by hous e (the 6th is considered a malefic hous e-- it rules illness ). T he Moo n is peregrine. It is, ho wever, acidentally dignif ied by house. Using Lilly's po int s yst em (which will be explained in a later less on), t he Moo n rates a + 8, and Mercury a +9. Not bad, either of them. Saturn, tho ugh-- the job- - is severely debilitated rat ing a - 10. Saturn is not a surprising planet to sho w up representing a government ob, but in this chart it is retro grade, and peregrine. It res ides in the 12th hous e of self - undoing. Furthermore, Mercury is conjunct the f ixed st ar Unukalhai, at 22Scorp04. Unukalhai signf ies success , f ollowed by do wnf all. Not a go od sign. The Ascendant is co njunct Aldebaran, signifying courage, violence, and sickness . Things don't loo k goo d. T here are no s tro ng aspect between the major players. Regarding career questions , however, Lilly says that "if none of the Signif icato rs be joyned to the Lord o f the 10th, see if the Lord o f the 1st or Moo n be in the 10th, he shall then att ain what he desires, if that planet be not impedited." In this chart , the Moon does indeed reside in the 10th, unimpedited. At the t ime of this writing, the querent is s till pursuing the job, but the chart seems to s uggest this: That although the pros pect f or his obt aining the job does not loo k very stro ng, there is a chance that in spite o f his past health problems he will be of f ered a job. He ought t o t hink twice-- serious ly-- about t aking, it, t hough, because it will not be what he hoped it would be, and more likely than not he will be unhappy (at best) in the position.
More Signs Miscellany Lilly uses various properties o f the s ign when cons idering charts . For instance, if a man or a woman asks, "Will we ever have children?" (and, believe it o r not, Lilly did answer quest ions like this, and s eemed unaf raid to deliver an unequivocal "No"), a barren sign like Virgo o n the cusp o f the 5th ho use o f children could contribute t o a negative answer. Here is a list of so me of the propert ies described by Lilly in Christian Astrology : Masculine, Diurnal Signs: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius , Aquarius. Feminine, Nocturnal Signs: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces. Regarding these distinctinctions, Lilly says:
The use whereof is this, That if you have a masculine Planet in a Masculine Sign, it imports him or her more manly; and so if a Masculine Planet be in a Feminine Sign, the man or woman is lesse couragious, &c.
Northern, or Boreal Signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo Sourthe rn, or Austral Signs: Libra, Scorpio, Sagitt arius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces Double- bodies Signs: Gemini, Pisces (Jones , drawing on James Wilson's A Complete Dictionary of Astrology , includes Virgo and Sagitt arius.) Bestial, Four-f oote d Signs: Aries, Taurus, Leo, Sagitt arius, Capricorn. (Jones says, "T he last half o f Sagitt arius only.") "Manly" or Humane Signs: Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius. (Jones includes t he f irst half of Sagitt arius.) According to Lilly, if the Ascendant ruler is in a bes tial sign, the querent will sho ws s ome characteris tics o f the animal represented by that s ign. Conversely, if the s ignif icato r is in a human sign, or if a human sign ascends, the querent will be more ref ined, and of "civil carriage." Fruitf ul Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Barren Signs: Gemini, Leo, Virgo Mute Signs: Cancer, Scor pio, Pisces, "t he more if Mercury be in any of them, in conjunction, Square, or Oppos itio n of Saturn." (Lilly 89) Signs of Long Ascension: Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra,Scorpio, and Sagitt arius (in t he northern hemisphere) Signs of Short Ascension: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces , Aries, Taurus, and Gemini More about t he signif icance of these in the next lesso n.
