Explosives I Surface Bulk Emulsions
Emulsion Offerings - Surface Bulk Products
Our base emulsions are non-detonable, with the virgin oil emulsions having a honey coloured appearance and the Eco emulsions being grey or black in colour. Base emulsions (SB100, S200, SB300) are handled and transported as an unsensitised product to mines and/or operational sites. The product is charged in blast holes when sensitised or blended with ANA and sensitised or with Anfo mixed to various ratios. The product’s water resistance is excellent, depending on the emulsion-to-Anfo ratio. The minimum initiator required to reliably detonate the sensitised emulsion is a 150 gram Pentolite Primer. The typical in-hole density of emulsions is 1.25g/cm³, but density varies with depth. Please contact your regional sales office for finding the best product suited to you application. The diagram below shows the various product options available to the market. The table gives a general technical overview of the three main product ranges, as base emulsions.

Note: The above table is only a guideline for matching Pentolite primers to blast hole diameter. Depending on the product type/dope, the critical or minimum hole diameter needs to be taken into account. The recommendations in the table above are based on actual data generated during blast output evaluation of AEL Mining Services formulations when loaded correctly. In practice however, the loading of emulsions in blast holes contaminated by groundwater and other debris may cause sub-optimal initiation conditions. As such AEL Mining Services always recommends using the largest booster possible provided the loading process can be performed safely.

Bulk System
Underground Bulk Emulsions
Application Conventional Narrow reef mining of any depth. Description: In a conventional mine with surface silos and emulsion cassettes the bulk system is utilised in conjunction with PCU’s. Unique deliverables: • Cheaper application than using Bagged emulsion • Shrunken explosive footprint • Bulk storage of emulsion and accessories • No more explosive transport underground • Non-explosive environment • Primerless blasting • Reduced product inventory • Cost-effective alternative to packaged explosive • Easier adherence to explosive legislation Process: • The bulk emulsion is delivered by tanker to a surface silo. • Cassettes then take the emulsion from the silo on surface into the workings, or to temporary silos on the levels. • The emulsion can be removed from the cassette and placed either in a portable tank adjacent to the workings for later pumping into portable containers or pumped directly from the cassette into portable containers. • Emulsion containers and bottled sensitiser are sent into the workings as required and loaded into the tanks of the PCU at the face. 18

Explosives I Underground Bulk Emulsions
Hybrid System
Underground Bulk Emulsions
Application Conventional Narrow reef and Trackless mines to a depth of 400m. Description: Trackless mines or mines with a combination of trackless and conventional narrow reef mining can make use of a delivery of bulk emulsion by means of “vertical drop” and thereafter used in conjunction with either mobile and/or portable charging units (MCU’s and/or PCU’s) Unique deliverables: • Cheapest application of bulk emulsion technology • Shrunken explosive footprint • Bulk storage of emulsion and accessories • No more explosive transport underground • Non-explosive environment • Primerless blasting • Reduced product inventory • Cost-effective alternative to packaged explosive • Easier adherence to explosive legislation • Reduced machinery on roadways enhancing safety • Reduction in diesel and maintenance costs for charging units • Reduced surface infrastructure Process: Emulsion is delivered in bulk: • Delivered to surface silo. The emulsion and sensitiser is then transported underground in MCU’s via a decline/portal to the working faces. • To a “Vertical Drop” discharge point. The tanker discharges emulsion and sensitiser down vertical pipes from surface into the underground silos. • The underground silos supply emulsion and sensitiser to MCU’s for charging the working faces. • Where the silo supplies emulsion for narrow reef charging with PCU’s, cassettes are filled at the underground silo that transfer emulsion into either portable tanks/containers or pump emulsion directly from the cassette into portable containers at the workings. • Similarly, the containers are then transported into the working faces and the emulsion is loaded into the tanks of the PCU. • Similarly, the narrow reef mining makes use of emulsion in conjunction with emulsified sensitiser brought underground daily from surface. © AEL Mining Services Limited I Product Catalogue, 2013

In practice however, the loading of bulk Anfex in blast holes contaminated by other debris may cause sub-optimal initiation conditions. As such AEL Mining Services always recommends using the largest booster possible provided the loading process can be performed safely.

Product Services AEL deploys established methodologies that present customers with a wide range of customised options and choices, all of which ultimately lead to successful blasts. These include services such as down-the-hole: prime; load; tie and or shoot (PLTS) and rock-on-ground for underground surface applications. Down the Hole Services AEL provides down the hole services on the bench and on time, assisting in measuring holes products and managing quality checks during preparation of the blast. Applicationspecific explosives produced at the customer’s operation is extremely cost efficient, as it allows for total flexibility, as well as last minute changes on the bench to suit the different mine’s blasting requirements. Prime, Load, Tie and/or Shoot (PLTS) Taking things one step further, while offering the same services as those included in its Down the Hole offering, AEL has upped the ante with its Prime, Load, Tie and/or Shoot (PLTS) service, which addresses the requirements of customers that face resource and construction constraints and therefore require a solution to these problems without the need to hire more or upskill existing members of staff. Opting for either the Fixed or Per Blasted Unit service, customers have access to AEL expertise on site for the duration of individual blasts. Deploying AEL’s PLTS service empowers customers with higher levels of convenience as AEL’s technical teams of expert crews (all accredited to adhere to legal compliance regulations) become an integral part of the production, planning and blasting operations. Using AEL’s full PLTS service means customers have access to hands on 8282
involvement on AEL’s part as their teams will manage the stemming of blast holes, mark out and fire rounds and take on the legal accountability of the blasts, in addition to the services offered in its PLT offering.
