Perormance Perorma nce st starts With W ith the the rame Our precisiOn fOcused design prOcess makes all the difference
The care and consideration that goes into the design o a bicycle rame is what sets Marin rames apart rom t he rest. Componentry can be interchanged on any bike to achieve better shiting, orks substituted or more suspension travel, or decals and paint chosen to infuence aesthetic appeal. Marin product designers exhaust every resource possible seeking to develop better perorming bikes. At the end o the day, it’s the rame that is the heart o the machine. Our R&D department spends countless hours designing, engineering and testing frames. From big picture decisions like material selection to nite details such as butting proles every aspect o a Marin rame has been engineered to provide the best possible riding experience. l
There is a big dierence between simply checking something o a list, and making sure it is done right. Our design team is proud of the fact that nothing gets into the shop that is not considered perfect.

• Meticulous Welds
Every bike in the line began life as an idea. A simple notion, perhaps conceived during a chairlift ride at Whistler, or during a particularly dicult climb on day ve o a nine day tour o the Italian Alps. The idea or each Marin rame is born to solve a situation, a particular trail eature, or simply started as a gut eeling that something about this could be better.
Close attention to the welding process ensures high strength and durability. • Material Selection
Whether it’s Aluminum, Carbon or Cromoly, materials are careully chosen that best suit each rame application.
Frame ideas begin as simple two dimensional sketches that are quickly followed by detailed 3D models in the computer. Once all of the design parameters have been careully dened, and the details have been worked out the rame undergoes a series o structural tests perormed in the computer. Intense stress, perormance and aerodynamic analysis occurs beore a rst prototype is produced. Once satisfactory results have been achieved in the computer the prototypes are built.
• Quality Control
Every design is comprehensively tested, both in the lab and in the real world, ensuring every rame is an example o our best work. • Custom Butting
The wall thickness o every tube on every rame has been painstakingly proled to provide just the right amount o vibration damping, the perect amount o stiness, and responsiveness.
Our test lab is the world. Prototypes are ridden in various conditions and various terrain all over the world. Feedback is given, designs are tweaked and bikes are tested further. Once the ride characteristics we want have been achieved the nal versions are run through exhaustive laboratory testing to ensure the rames meet the strictest international standards or strength, durability, and saety.

Setting Marin Frames Apart From the Competition
• Custom Tubesets

The rame is the single most important component o your bicycle. Like the oundation o a house, the rame is what a great bike is built upon. We careully engineer and design each model to be built with the ideal tubesets that deliver the best ride charateristics or every individual bike.
The soul o a bicycle lies in how it rides, how it handles the next switchback, how it puts the power to the ground, how it manages the next rock section, and how it tracks at top speed. These characteristics are a unction o the bike’s geometry, which is dened by the lengths o the tubes and the angles at which they interace. It is these details that Marin designers ocus on to achieve a truly great riding bicycle. D 3 4 D 3 5

hydroorming: Hydroorming takes butting and shaping a step urther by allowing complicated organic three dimensional engineered shapes to be readily made. By changing the outside shape o a tube we can tune how it will behave under the rider’s load. Increasing the size o a tube near a welded junction increases its strength in a similar way as butting, but spreads the load over a larger area. Much the same way as a tree gets larger at its base, our product engineers have taken a lesson rom nature and applied it to our shaped tubesets. The intense pressure required to hydroorm these tubesets means that shaping is done virtually cold orged. The molecular alignment o the material is not interered with, so the alloy maintains its native grain structure and inherent strength. The results are incredibly strong rames that can only be a Marin Bike. • At tube junctions the cross-section of the tubing is greater to increase the weld surace area helping dissapate the loads. • Smaller diameter sections allow the tubes to ex, dissipate vibrations, and reduce weight while maintaining their strength. • Hydroforming provides structurally superior tubing with which we construct our lightweight, durable, and organically shaped rames.
custom butting: Every tube used in the construction of a Marin bike begins life as a simple, plain round tube and is transormed into a perormance machine. Butting is a process by which a plain round tube has material removed in order to make it lighter without sacricing its useul strength. By customizing this process or every size o every bike in the Marin line, we’re able to better tune each bike’s ride quality for each specic rider. Often times, tubesets are designed with the tallest riders in mind and are cut down to t shorter riders. While this would save money in the rame manuacturing process, we believe that this is a short cut on quality and perormance. Marin Bikes’ nearcustom rame production means every bike is built with you, the end rider, specically in mind. • Tubing is thicker at the ends where welds are applied and forces are the highest. This ensures there is enough material to produce a reliable welded joint, and a stronger structure to manage stress and strain. • Thinner wall sections span the mid section of the tube, where forces are lowest. The result is a tube that retains its strength while managing to reduce weight. • Butting specications, or proles, are different for each tube and each rame. Additionally, every size o a specic rame has a dierent butting prole.

rame geometry: We strive to build not only superbly constructed rames that are lightweight and durable, but to speciy rame measurements and geometries that are engineered utilizing cutting edge technology and computer modeling. In addition to thousands o hours o saddle time, Autodesk’s Inventor sotware allows the Marin R&D team to dynamically measure rame perormance and eciencies to the most innitesimal levels. The result is a bicycle that has been engineered to out perorm expectations in all o the areas it was designed to excel in.

the susPension susPension system system at the core Our award winning quad-link 2.0 suspensiOn has set the new st standard andard
The QUAD-Link 2.0 system has been engineered to deliver ecient, lightweight, long term perormance in the most demanding o conditions. The intelligent 4-bar linkage system delivers an exceptional, award winning ride, whether sprinting down rutted trails, carving singletrack turns, getting technical or powering up hills. While the original suspension principals have remained constant since its inception in 2003, the delivery and applications have evolved. Now built into a unique hydroormed rameset, the QUAD-Link 2.0 has been applied to the 4.7” travel Quad XC, the 5.5” travel Quad Trail, and their big brother, the Quad XLT at 6.7” inches of travel.

QuaD Xc :
QuaD- link 2.0 sYstEm
quad-linK 2.0 : K sp s cp Fundamental to the QUAD-Link system are the ollowing key components that make this the most eective suspension system available today. Intelligent Wheel Path: By allowing
the wheel to move backwards early in its travel, the QUAD-Link 2.0 system is able to respond to square-edged bumps with very little interruption to your orward momentum. Even the smallest bump activates the suspension, keeping the wheel in constant contact with the ground and improving traction. About one third o the way through its travel the wheel’s path shits to a zero chain growth curve, eliminating suspension induced pedal eedback.
10
i P c: c: The Instantaneous Pivot Center (IPC), and its movement during suspension travel determine the bike’s suspension characteristics and how it responds to terrain and rider input. Our intelligent system constantly adjusts its IPC to ensure that wherever the suspension is in its travel, the IPC is in the optimum position or maximum perormance and eciency. The IPC in the QUAD-Link 2.0 system changes the eective chain length as the wheel moves through its travel. As the suspension moves deeper into its travel the eective chainstay length gets shorter, which reduces the leverage on the rear shock. This eect is also known as a rising rate suspension.
RideCharacteristics Intelligent Wheel to Shock Ratio: Most
Quick Links: Short links are aster to
Benecial Chain Growth: Chain growth
suspension bikes drive the shock by a rotating linkage with a xed pivot center, meaning that their shock movement is proportional to the rear wheel movement throughout the whole travel. With the QUAD-Link 2.0 system, the shock is driven directly o the swingarm that is pivoted on a moving center (IPC) allowing us to tune our shock to move proportionately less early on in the travel, giving the bike a plusher long travel eel and making the suspension much more sensitive to smaller bumps. As the wheel moves through its travel, the wheel to shock ratio decreases, meaning proportionately more shock travel to wheel movement. This stops the suspension rom blowing through its travel when the bike takes a big hit and more quickly returns it to a normal riding position.
react, lighter and stier. Designed to be as short as possible, they move quickly to produce rapid and controlled changes in the IPC, allowing us to generate the most ecient axle path. This simultaneously tunes the wheel to shock ratio or the best perormance and eciency at all times.
occurs during the travel o a suspension system due to the increase in the distance between the center o the bottom bracket and the center o the rear wheel. Too little chain growth makes a bike bob and have poor traction, too much and the bike will rise on every pedal stroke and suer noticeable pedal eedback, transerring the shock o any big bumps through the drivetrain to the rider. The QUAD-Link 2.0 system has been designed to optimize chain growth or maximum eciency throughout the suspension’s travel, generating just enough growth early on to pull the wheel into the ground providing antastic traction. Further through its travel, the QUADLink 2.0 system allows the chain growth to gradually reduce to zero, virtually eliminating pedal eedback, improving handling. comort and reducing rider atigue.
Simply Symetrical: Staying with our
straight orward approach o orm ollows unction, the look o all our QUAD-Link 2.0 designs is clean, simple and elegant. The result is a perectly balanced, totally symmetrical, lightweight assembly. The let to right symmetry gives uncompromised handling, a very important characteristic when pushing your bike and yoursel to the limits.
• Continually optimized wheel to shock ratio means great climbing and sprinting perormance • Intelligent axle path controls chain growth, eliminates bob and pedal eedback and u t h or i gives excellent small bump response

big wheels enter the line in uniquelY marin stYle
New for 2008 is the introduction of 29” wheels into the Marin Bikes lineup. 29er’s have dierent riding characteristics rom their 26” wheeled counterparts.
The WFG line that we have designed is more than just about rame modications. Our designers have carefully chosen parts and accessories that leverage the strengths o a women’s ergonomics. Each WFG model is designed to incorporate these elements in order to maximize the ride experience or each rider.
The larger diameter decreases the wheels “angle o attack.” This means that the wheels roll over obstacles in the trail with greater ease, and when combined with the larger wheels’ impact on gyroscopic orces translates into a wheel that has signicantly more momentum. This can allow a rider to cross rough terrain quickly.
With the same attention to detail as our other models, we use custom drawn and butted tubesets in each size to tailor the ride eel. We specically tune suspension orks to better match a woman’s weight distribution, and careully chose parts to improve comort and t at all contact points.
In relation to the centerline o the wheels, a 29” rider has a lower center o gravity, giving the 29er rider an increased sense o stability. Additionally the 29” wheel rearranges the contact patch o the tire making it longer. This can help increase traction on loose or rough suraces. As the tire sinks into a sot surace the 29” wheel contact patch becomes larger than an equivalent width 26” wheel improving the tires ability to nd traction so the rider can keep moving orward.

Typically a woman’s body is proportioned dierently than a man’s. Her longer legs relative to her torso may mean that some women t better on a bike adjusted or these actors than a standard rame. Marin Women’s Fit Geometry bikes like the Juniper Trail take this into consideration and are built with rame compartments shorter than corresponding conventional models. The end result is a near custom eel with our Women’s Fit Geometry.
