How good am I at communicating? You know, how good am I at communicating. Obviously we all want to be a 10. If you want to be memorable, you want to be perfect, you've got to be a 10. Most people don't tend to write 10 for this but just have a think what your score might be. Maybe make a note of it. I would now want you to write another number next to this. If I was to ask your colleagues in your organization what mark after 10 would they give you or how good you are at communicating, write another score down. Yeah, so if you think you're an 8 and they think you're a 2, that's bad. Then next to that let's write another number down.

Think of someone else you have regular dealings with, maybe your shareholders or your customers. Write down a score between 1 and 10, how good do they think you are at communicating and then do another one. Your suppliers, how good do they think you are and then other members in your management team, how good do they think you are? Before we carry on, a quick show of hands. Has anybody written down lots of 10s? [laughter] It's so hard to get this right. But the three words to remember if you want to be a more memorable manager are success, not perfection.

We won't get 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10 but we can all score more highly than we've written down here and we're going to have a look at how we can do this. Now one great way to be memorable is to be more interesting. And one way to be more interesting is to think what people find interesting and then just do that. Make sense? Most people tend to like similar things when they're on the receivin g end of communication. So one thing that people tend to like is when a speaker includes some stories. Yeah?

That's the thing that most people tend to like, not pointless stories where you think why are you telling me this but related stories which are interesting and engaging and make the point. They work very well. And I've had feedback that despite all the things that I've done in my life, what most people are most interested in is where I first came into communication and it was also to do with my family background. My mother's actually blind. She can't see anything at all so when I was a two, three year-old learning how to speak, I would sit on my mum's knee and say so what's the best way to describe this then. Now when you think about this, when you're talking to the bank, they can't see things from your point of view. When you're talking to customers they can't see things from your point of view. When you talk to your team they don't see things from your point of view. So this ability to communicate to people who really are blind to what we're interested in is extremely useful skills to have. Is that a fact? Uh-huh. Now it's really interesting. If you see this video today and then you never hear from me for another six months and someone says to you have you ever heard of Andy Bounds? I'll bet you might say, "Oh yeah, isn't he the guy with the blind mum?" Because it's just the most memorable thing. So if you want to be memorable, stories are a great way to do it. Another thing that people often like is interactivity.

We've done stories. That's one. We've done interactivity. Another one, short. I want it to be short. You know? Another one, I want it to be relevant. So we've got here stories, interactivity, shortness, relevance. So again, if you can just go in groups 2 or 3 and come up with 10 as quickly as you can and then we'll have a look at how we can develop these characteristics ourselves. Okay, well done, ladies and gentlemen. Did you all get to 10 or nearly that? What sort of things were you guessing? Sir? Innovative. You know something that is different, something that jumps out in some way. Sir? Creative. Yeah, something new. And there's other things you might have written down as well. So people like things to be fun. People like things to be different than last time. People like things to contain variety so it's not the same all the way through. And so you've got a great list of points here. If you look down the list, is it fair to say that if communications were like this, they would be quite memorable? Yeah? They'd be fun, they'd be interactive, they'd be innovative, they'd be creative and even better, they'd be short. So it would be wonderful if we want to be memorable, we need to communicate in

these types of ways because these are the ways that people remember. So let's continue this exercise by going into it in a bit more detail. We've listed characteristics of a memorable manager here. If we want to become more memorable as a manager, we need to become better at each of those things that we've listed. So next to each of those, we're going to think of activities that we could do, that we could adopt which would make us more like we have written. So for instance, what I said before about interactivity, if I wanted to be more interactive, there's various things that I could do. So one of them is I could ask you guys to do an exercise, which we've just done. Another thing I could do is I could ask the audience to shout out comments. Another thing that I could do is maybe get some of you to write something on the flip chart.

Another thing I could do is I could say write down your biggest concern with this and we'll talk about it later on. Another thing I could do is get you to change table so you work with somebody else. Another ... You get the point. If I want my sessions to be interactive, I need to do more than none of those because if I do none of them, not interactive. So for me to become a more interactive, memorable manager, I just need to do some of these things here. And let's say we've written down that stories are great. Well you get stories from various sources. As we all know, people like the personal stories so, for instance, the story about my mother. So you might think have I got something relevant here from my life
which I can bring into this and I feel comfortable sharing and the audience will feel comfortable hearing? Now the only rule with this is you have to make sure that it has a point. Sometimes you see people say let me tell you about something that happened in my childhood and you think I don't know why you've told me that. So did you notice when I said about my mother I then said and you have to communicate with people who are blind to your agenda so I managed to make it relevant to you. What you might do is think what point do I want to make here and let's say the point is all about communication. Go into a search engine on the internet and type in effective communication and see if any stories come out. Or again if you go into a search engine, you can look for websites which have quotes on there, you know, business quotations.

And if you go onto business quotations there's some wonderful quotes on there and they're like mini stories. You know people really like those. So sometimes when I'm talking with potential customers and they tell me what they want, I always say well you might want that but can we just have a couple of conversations to see if I can bring you other value that you haven't thought of yet. You know the guy, the car manufacturer who said that, “If I had done what customers wanted, I would have built a faster horse. Yeah? Because the customers were on horses and they thought a faster horse was as good as it could be. And can you hear things like that it's quite interesting. You might share the Henry Ford quote with someone else because you heard it today and it makes it memorable. So all I'm
doing here is on the left-hand side of a two column table I'm saying something like interactivity and on the right-hand side I'm listing as many different thingsas possible for how I could be more interactive.
Notice I'm being very definite with this. I'm not saying interactivity is great therefore be interactive, you know. I'm saying ask questions, split the group up and so on. So again why don't we spend another couple of minutes, go back in your pairs, in your teams, look at what you've written on the left-hand side and ask yourself what could I do, what actions could I take to be more like what I've said there. Okay? Give it a go. So ladies and gentlemen, sorry to interrupt you. This is the sort of exercise that however long I gave you, you could have really done with another half hour. You know it takes a really long time. But my first question is this. In the time we've had together, do you understand what we're doing here and can you do it after today's session? Yeah? So it's great so you can carry on because again a famous business quote by George Bernard Shaw, the Irish author, The single biggest mistake with communication is the illusion that it has taken place...which is a posh way of saying communication never ends. And if you want to be a more memorable manager, your learning will never end so don't let this exercise be the last time you ever think about how to be more memorable. Take it home, spend time on it. You know a great way to fill the left-hand column is to ask your team what do they really like whenthey're sitting through communications and they will fill in your left-hand column for you, you know. Make them be polite when they tell you Is it fair to say if

Look down the list of words you have written on the right-hand side and why don't you just maybe put a circle around the 1 or 2 which you think, yeah, I'm going to do that. There's no point of having a list of 40 things because if you have a list of 40 things you won't know where to start and the golden rule is if you don't know where to start, you don't start. So what we want is rather than a list of 40, put a circle around a couple of things. So as a result of this exercise you may well have I'm going to ask more questions at the start of sessions to get people engaged and also I'm going to go onto a search engine and find some great business quotes. Even if you did that, that's a great start. Master that, become good at it and when you've done that, what do you think you should do next? Another couple of things from the right-hand column. So question #1, lease could I ask you to write down as many as you can remember of the 5 words at the top of list. The 5 words at the top of the list? It's not an intelligence test. It doesn't matter how you do but can you remember any of the words at the top? The reason for asking this is one of the ways people's memory works is what you call early bias, in other words they're biased towards the early things they see so they remember slide 1 of a presentation more than slide 2, they remember the top of the paragraph more than the bottom of the paragraph and so on.

There was a word that's appeared a few times. If you noticed that, can you make a note of it? It's nice. There's a couple of people in the room who are going that's 1 out of 11 I've now scored. And finally question #4, question #4 is there was someone's name appeared halfway down. If you remember the person's name could you make a note of it? So question 3, the repeated word, that has to do with what you call repetitive bias. Some people remember things that are repeated. Yeah? Some people remember things that are repeated. And finally, question 4, some people remember things that are different. It's what you call outstanding bias. You know, it jumps out in some way. So the 4 questions people remember things at the beginning and/or ... ... they remember things at the end and/or ... ... they remember things that are repeated and/or ... ... they remember things that are a bit different. Hen, bus, brown, hit and potato. It truly doesn't matter how you've done. The average score if you care is a 2 or 3 but you know it doesn't matter. Question 2 where the average score is none or 1 normally so be reassured. Flute, high, tar, horse and tailor. Just out of interest, quick show of hands, who scored more on question 2 than question 1? So if I want to maximize the chance of you remember my key messages, I need to say it in each of those four places. In other words, at the beginning, at the end, repeating it and also something in there which is a bit different. So one of the key points of this particular session is to be memorable we have to do things that other people find memorable. So let's think. That was one of my key messages. And can you see that we said it at the beginning of the session? Yeah? We've also just said it now.
