TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN
01J Clut ch Clearances When rebuilding the forward clutch and reverse brake on these units, it is necessary to check the clearances when replacing the friction and steel plates, this is especially important when upgrading the six plate forward clutch pack to the seven plate assembly (Audi only recommend that this upgrade be carried out on 3.0Ltr petrol vehicles and 1.9Ltr, 2.5Ltr diesel vehicles), all 1.8Ltr, 2.0Ltr & 2.4Ltr Petrol vehicles should be fitted with 6 plate forward clutch packs. After carrying out the 7 plate upgrade it is required that an ECU flash upgrade be carried at the dealer. The correct clearance for the forward clutch is 1.50mm, to check this a specially shaped pair of feeler gauges is required as well as a tool to push down on the pressure plate to f acilitate the check.
Feeler gauge Kit Pressure Plate Depressor Part No. 01J.TOOL03 Part No. 01J.TOOL04 The clearance for the reverse brake is suggested to be around 1.30mm to 1.50mm and is determined by subtracting the distance of the cover plate to the apply piston, from the distance of the clutch pack to the edge of the case. Adjustment to clutch clearances is made possible by selective thickness steel plates; these plates are available in kit form or as separate plates as follows: Part No. 01J.CK03 Forward Selective Steel Plate Kit, contains 2 each of the following selective plates. Part No. 01J.STP01 (1.90mm Thick) Part No. 01J.STP02 (2.15mm Thick) Part No. 01J.STP03 (2.65mm Thick) Part No. 01J.STP04 (2.90mm Thick) Part No. 01J.STP05 (3.15mm Thick) Part No. 01J.CK04 Reverse Selective Steel Plate Kit, contains 2 each of the following selective plates.
