9. Funktionsbeschreibung
9. Description of operation
Cold-regenerating desiccant dryers utilise the natural tendency of the desiccant to establish a balance from the water vapor partial pressure with the ambient air. In the course of the drying process, the desiccant adsorbs water vapour from the incoming compressed air. Part of the incoming flow of compressed air, which has been dried and reduced in pressure, is then passed over the desiccant. It discharges the previously adsorbed water to the purge air. The special activated carbon in the vessel adsorbed oil-aerosols of the air flow. The flow direction of the compressed-air is from top to bottom. The oil content is 0,01 micron. An oil indicator is mounted at the compressed-air outlet in order to check the quality of the compressed air.
HINWEIS Die in Klammern näher bezeichneten Bauteile (z.B. B006) beziehen sich auf das R&I-Schema.
Remark! The component specified in parentheses (e.g. B006) refer to the R&I schematic diagram.
9.1 Operation
9.1 Wirkungsweise •
•
•
•
The incoming compressed air passes through inlet air valve (V003) via flow distributor to desiccant tower (B007), where it is dried by the desiccant.
•
T h e c o mp r es s ed a i r t h en f l ow s t hr o ug h th e fl o w distributor and the check valve (RV011) to the compressed air outlet.
•
A portion of the dried air flows through the regulating valve (V034) (adjust the pre-pressure), through the orifice (X013), where the dried air expand, via flow distributor of the tower (B006) into the right tower.
•
Here, the water vapour adsorbed during the drying process is extracted from the desiccant.
•
•
The wet purge air is passed through flow distributor, purge air valve (V015) and purge air muffler ( F017) into the atmosphere.
•
•
The dryer operates according to this sequence for 4 1/2 minutes, after which purge air valve (V015) from the right tower closes.
•
The system pressure is built up in the right tower (B006).
•
After 30 seconds the inlet air valve (V002) from the right tower opens and the inlet air valve (V003) from the left tower closes. The desiccant dryer dries at the regenerated right tower (B006).
•
The purge air valve (V014) from the left tower (B007) is opened and the tower is exhausted.
•
The wet compressed air flows through inlet air valve (V002) and flow distributor into tower (B006), where it is dried.
•
In dieser Anordnung arbeitet der Trockner 4 1/2 Minuten. Dann schließt die Regenerationsluftarmatur (V015) des rechten Behälters .
•
Im rechten Behälter (B006) wir der Systemdruck aufgebaut.
•
Then flows the dried compressed air through flow distributor and check valve (RV010) from the right tower to the compressed air outlet.
•
A portion of the dried air flows through the orifice (X013) and the flow distributor into the left tower (B007).

•
Then flows the dried compressed air through flow distributor and check valve (RV010) from the right tower to the compressed air outlet.
•
A portion of the dried air flows through the orifice (X013) and the flow distributor into the left tower (B007).
•
The water vapour which adsorbed during the drying process is extracted from the desiccant.
•
The wet purge air is passed through flow distributor, purge air valve (V014) and purge air muffler (F016) into the atmosphere.
•
At 4 1/2 minutes again the purge air valve (V014) from the left tower closes.
•
The system pressure is built up in the regenerated tower.
•
After 30 seconds the inlet air valve (V003) from the left tower opens and the inlet air valve (V002) from the right tower closes.
•
The purge air valve (V015) from the right tower opens.
•
The dryer is at the beginning from the dryer cycle again.
A complete cycle lasts 10 minutes. At this dryer cyc le and in addition with the presupposition in chapter 12. "Technical datas" the desiccant dryer enables the pressure dewpoint at -40°C.
•
•
•
•
•
The compressed-air then flows through the distributor to the activated carbon tower (B 039), which is filled with highly effective activated carbon. The flow diffuser ensures even flow through the active carbon bed. Thereby adsorption is optimally prepared. Grade of adsorption depends on contact time and velocity of passing through. The optimum is reached by the optimal size of the tower. The compressed air downflows through the oil vapour adsorber (B 039) in order to maximise life time and ability of adsorption of the active carbon. In order to ensure high quality adsorptionn extra active carbon offers safety. After passing through the active carbon bed, the compressed air leaves the tower (B 039) through the flow diffuser downside. The shut-off valve (NV043) with oil indicator (IND 044) is situated at the lower part of the tower (B 039). During oil vapour measuring very small portion of air leaves passing through the oil indicator. The oil indicator is to measure the oil vapour content of the compressed air system. (for further description please refer to part 10.4 oil indicator A 4000). The compressed air passes through the dust filter (F 012). The filter (F 012) protects the compressed air system against abrasion of active carbon.

9.2 ECO-CONTROL 2
9.2 ECO-CONTROL 2
The ECO-CONTROL 2 represents a method of saving purge air on cold-regenerating desiccant dryers which are operated at part-load. The ECO-CONTROL 2 - control system processes temperature changes in the desicant bed. These temperature changes result from the heat (thermal energy) which is released when the desiccant bed is active and drying. These temperature means adsorption heat. The temperature change result of the thermal energy, which is use to regenerated the desiccant bed. These energy means desorption heat. The scale of the temperature changes are an indirect measure of the amount of water vapour in the compressed-air to be dried.“ This information is processed by the control system, which calculated the load from the desiccant dryer and regulated the duration of the switch-over cycles when optimal use is made of the desiccant's thermal storage capacity. As a result, 98% and more of the adsorption head is stored, ensuring that sufficient thermal energy is available during the regeneration process to guarantee the effectiveness of the purge air.
Hinweis!
Remark! For the connection of external trouble indication systems the dryer is equipped with a potential free contact (Switching failure / temperature probe break). For connections please see the wiring diagram (chapter 14).
9.3 Differential pressure monitoring The differential pressure of the pre-filters (F 000 and F 001) is monitored by the differential pressure switch (PDSH 000) in order to shut the valve (V 040) at the compressed air outlet in case of high ∆ p (e.g. oil separator of compressor fails).

10.4 Öl-Indikator A 4000
10.4 Oil-indicator A 4000
The oil indicator is a calibrated measuring instrument used to detect aerosol-mist levels of oil entrainment hat may be present in compressed-air systems. The indicator is sensitive enough to measure a concentration of oil entrainment as low as 0,01 ppm (0,12 mg/m³) in a compressed air system. It can be used in systems with line pressure between 0,7 bar and max. 8 bar. When the needle valve of the oil indicator is open, a minimum quatity of air will flow through the calibrated plactic tube. Any oil present in the air will then carry a red oil soluble dye up the tube, coloring a white material in the tube. The rated of color travel will be proportional to the amount of oil present. The parts per million (ppm) value of oil entrained in the air can be determined using the conversion chart included with the instrument. After use, the needle valve should be closed and left in the line and the cartridge removed. At the time of the next test, a replacement cartridge will need to be installed on the needle valve fitting.
Installation
Installation
Maximum working pressure: 8,5 bar. Maximum working temperature: 49°C. In humid air, moisture may wash traces of dy e up the tube, creating a light pink area above the dark red area. When calculating oil entrainment, measure only to the top of the dark red column.
WARNING! If the pressure exceeds 8,5 bar or the retaining nut is loosened, the oil indicator tube could blow out of the compression fitting, creating a hazardous condition. The indicator must be mounted vertical for best possible performanc e. A threaded pipe connection 1/8“ inner thread is provided. Before installing a replacement cartridge, first check that the needle valve on the existing installation is closed. Install the replacement cartridge by tightening the lower 1/8“ nut in place. Do not disturb the factory adjusted torque on the upper 3/16“ retaining nut that holds the plastic tube in place. Also make sure that the indicator scale can be conveniently viewed before tightening the cartridge in place.

Measurement
Messung •
•
•
•
•
•

Before taking a measurement, fill out the record tag firnished with the oil indicator. Record the line pressure or the average pressure (if it varies at the point of installation). Fully rotate the needle valve handle clockwise to open it and record the time that the needle valve was opened on the record tag. Slide the record tag over the oil indicator to avoid misplacing it. At the following times and locations, visual inspections of the oil indicators should be made: a) When installing in front of an oil-filter, inspection should be made after 1 hour . b) When installing after an oil-filter, the first inspection should be made after 40 hours. Judging from the rate of color travel established at the time of the first inspection, schedule the final reading of the indicator at approximately 1 unit and preferably not more than 1,5 units. Close the needle valve, remove the oil indicator cartridge, and record the time. Leave the needle valve in the air line for future testing purposes. Record the units of color travel (as read from the indicator scale) and the total time in hours.
Oil concentration determination 1. If color travel is 1 unit at the final reading time, find the Total Hours on the right side of the conversion chart and the Pressure on the bottom of the chart. The point where Hours and Pressure intersect is the parts per million of oil concentration. 2. If the final reading occurs at othan than 1 unit of color travel, divide the units traveled by the total hours to find the Rate of Color Travel. 3. Find the Rate of Color Travel on the left side of the conversion chart and the Pressure on the bottom of the chart. The point where Rate and Pressure intersect is the parts per million of oil concentration. For any Rate of Color Travel beyond 0,24 units/hr., the measured rate should be divided by any factor which will bring it into the range of the chart. This number should then be used to determine the oil concentration (ppm). This concentration must then be multiplied by the same factor used previously to determine the actual oil concentration.
