Home Learning Guidance Why Home Learning?
Home Learning [homework] checks that you have understood what you have done in class, and helps you prepare for something that you might be doing in the next lesson for that subject.

KSSC Home Learning Expectations
Students To listen carefully to the Home Learning activity instructions in class. Copy down the Home Learning activity and deadline date into your planner Ensure that all Home Learning activities are completed and handed in on time Attempt all Home Learning activities to the best of your ability, paying attention to your subjects Minimum and Challenge Targets. Take care of your work presentation. Inform your Subject Teacher of any difficulties before the lesson so that further support can be given.

Set Home Learning activities according to the Home Learning timetable. Give full and comprehensive instructions and ensure that students record home learning activities in planners. Set deadlines for completed work and ensure that they are met. Provide feedback and return all Home Learning activities promptly. Provide help and support.
Provide a table, chair and a quiet place to work. Negotiate when Home Learning activities are to be done. Check the time spent on individual activity. Ensure that outside clubs do not affect the quality of work produced Check the presentation and content of all Home Learning activities being returned to school. Sign the planner each week. Year 11 GCSE English What will be studied this term This term, Year 11 will be focusing on exam skills using past papers as a revision tool. For writing: Students will write to communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, using and adapting forms and selecting vocabulary appropriate to task and purpose in ways that engage the reader. They will organise information and ideas into structured and sequenced sentences, paragraphs and whole texts, using a variety of linguistic and structural features to support cohesion and overall coherence. Some will use a range of sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate punctuation and spelling. For reading: Students‟ responses will show their appreciation of, and ability to comment on, a range of texts, and they evaluate how authors achieve their effects through the use of linguistic, structural and presentational devices. This term, Year 11 will be focussing on the Prose Fiction part of the exam. For reading:

What will be studied this term GCSE Art & Design Create A Portfolio. During this term students will gain an understanding of some of the requirements of the GCSE course.

The more time an artist spends on honing their craft the more successful the work they produce will become. Even when Home Learning activities are not set, students should be working on extending their portfolio further. Assessed work must be connected to the starting point you (the students) have been given.

Year 11 GCSE Applied Business What will be studied this term
Business Students will be spending the Autumn term researching two businesses, 1 local and 1 national/international, in preparation for their controlled assessment in the second half of the Autumn term. It is crucial that they also carry out home learning activities, continuing their research, in order to ensure they gather enough information to have a good attempt at the coursework tasks.
In Business Finance, students will develop their understanding of financial statement to include the importance of financial statements - Profitability and Liquidity ratios.
How will work be assessed
The controlled assessment is divided into 3 sections. Each section is worth 30 marks, of which 6 marks are allocated for research. The research work carried out in the Summer term will account for 6 marks, and additional marks will be awarded for the development of Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). In Business Finance, there will be an end of unit test before the October holiday to test elements from Unit 2D Importance of Financial Statements - Profitability and Liquidity ratios.
What needs to be done at home
All lessons are accessible from Kingsbury Smart, so students can revise what was covered in lessons.
Each unit is supported by a Word Wall, with differentiated explanation of keywords – Description (D-G), Example (C-B) and importance to business (A-A*).
Most importantly this half term, students should allocate at least 1 hour each week to gather information as part of their controlled assessment research – news articles, adverts, brochures, webpages etc. Evidence can be printed, and kept in a folder, or stored electronically (could use Kingsbury Smart to create a project folder)

What will be studied this term
Following on from the written assignments and Painting and decorating unit completed in Spring term.
Students will be attending Erdington Skills Centre to complete the Bricklaying unit. They will attend 6x full days at the centre.
How will work be assessed
Practical work is assessed by the tutor and graded pass/ merit/ distinction.
Written work is assessed in the same way with the opportunity to resubmit work after corrections have been made.
What needs to be done at home
Students are given a Home Learning booklet to complete with background information on bricklaying. This forms research for their written assignments.
What Key Language will be developed Terms specific to construction, health & safety and bricklaying.

Year 11 GCSE Drama What will be studied this term Students will be working on team building skills, improvisation (spontaneous and rehearsed) and performance skills. Students use explorative strategies, the drama medium and elements of drama in order to learn how to create meaning through performance.
How will work be assessed
Students undergo summative assessment throughout the work which is teacher led and at the end of each term through a process of teacher, peer and self-assessment. Key pieces of class work will be marked according to the School‟s assessment and feedback policy. All performances are filmed for moderation purposes.

Students need to write up the work they have covered in the lessons, logging all decisions made and this will form part of their documentary response.

Year 11 BTEC Engineering What will be studied this term
BTEC Engineering Unit 10 (Using computer aided drawing techniques in engineering)
This unit gives students the opportunity to use computer aided drawing (CAD) techniques in an engineering context.
In this unit students are given the opportunity to use CAD software to represent two dimensional (2D) engineering information using industry standard methods of orthographic projection and learn how to present three-dimensional (3D) objects using isometric drawing techniques.
How will work be assessed
The unit is coursework based however there are 4 controlled assessments that must be completed by all students. Students can expect to get either a PASS, MERIT OR DISTINCTION once coursework has been completed.

Year 11 GCSE Film Studies What will be studied this term Key Film language terms and topics such as: Genre Mise en Scene (camera shots, lighting, sound, editing) A key outcome is the assessment research task which counts for 5% of the overall grade and is uploaded to a candidate‟s e-portfolio via the school‟s Real Smart platform.
How will work be assessed
50% of the course is assessed internally: the first task is to research the production, distribution and exhibition details of a film of the candidate‟s choice and to begin an analysis of a scene using some of the key aspects of film language.
What needs to be done at home
Students should be encouraged to develop a wider experience of cinema of a range of genres (both Hollywood and non-Hollywood).
Students can use computers to research their chosen film for the assessed task and chosen scene for the analysis task. Parents should encourage students to research widely and not just the standard sites of www.wikipedia.org and www.imdb.com

How will work be assessed
Student progress will be measured using a range of assessments that will be held at the end of each topic studied. This piece of work is levelled and shared with the student to track and monitor their progress, in line with their MT (minimum target) and CT (challenge target). Within lessons the teacher will also use a variety of AfL (assessment for learning strategies) that will ensure the teacher is adapting activities to cater to the needs of all students and make sure progress is being made within individual lessons.

Year 11 GCSE Hospitality and Catering What will be studied this term
The year 11 course concentrates on the food preparation and service aspect of the hospitality and the catering industry. Students are required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: • • • • • •

“21st century technology such as gaming technologies, mobile phone apps, media marketing technologies and web-based technologies make great use of dynamic specialist technologies to differentiate their products for the end user. This unit will enable students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that would be expected in creative media industries such as advertising, music and online marketing.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about dynamic products such as music recordings and/or mixes; video/media news clips and animation for webpages before going on to create their own dynamic product.
Movies, animations and sounds bring messages and communications to life. The ability to create, edit and enhance these types of media is an essential business and personal skill that can be used for many purposes. On completion of this unit students will be able to prepare, create, export and evaluate a timeline-based dynamic product.
How will work be assessed

How will work be assessed
Students complete six weeks of each activity and are moderated by two PE teachers to ensure consistency of grades are given to each performer. This accounts for 60% of their overall PE Grade. Students will then complete a short exam at the end of each unit of work to assess their progress on the relevant topic.

Students need to complete each homework booklet that is provided by their class teacher which consists of exam style questions. This is marked throughout the unit of work and should help students to understand what specifically the question is asking them for.
