Yogi Avayogi technique Introduction: Among the most brilliant extensions and applications of the principles of classical jyotish were those researched and published by Seshadri Iyer of BangaloreIndia! Iyer"s wor# has been extensively taught in the $est by %art de&ouw who hasverified the validity of these principles through years of applying them in his ownpractice! After studying these principles I too have used them with my clients andhave come to rely on their validity and accuracy!Among many wide'ranging and useful topics Iyer put forward a methodology forexamining prosperity in a chart that is quic# and easy to pinpoint and evaluate! Althoughembedded in a larger context that requires more study and experience the pointsdetailed pointsdetailed below should give an astrologer good insight into the prosperity promised in achart and when the promised prosperity may be more li#ely to deliver the goods!Because these principles are ta#en from a more holistic and complex context howeverthere may be instances when the simple applications described below do not fully reflectthe true experience! (herefore please enjoy applying these techniques with the#nowledge that it is not yet the total story! )alculation of the Yogi *oint : Iyer was inspired by some +adi methods that wereavailable to him to define and calculate specific specific planetary yogas that were correlatedwith prosperity! (he basis of these yogas involved identifying the ,yogi point-! Althoughthe calculation of this point is available in many computer programs it is important thatevery jyotishi understands the basis for the computer calculation and is capable of calculating it independently! (o find find this point one simply adds .for a particular chart/the longitude of the Sun the 0oon and a constant of 12 degrees 34 minutes! (heresultant sum will be the longitude #nown as the yogi point! It has been my experiencethat many aspiring students need practice at calculations and I therefore will providean example in great detail including how one reduces the resulting sums to find thecorrect longitudes! .&or those who find these operations simple and obvious this sectioncan be quic#ly s#immed!/ Suppose in a given chart the Sun is at 56 degrees 33 minutesof *isces and the 0oon is at 7 degrees and 67 minutes of 8emini! 9ne could proceedwith the calculation calculation in two different ways! 0y preferred method is the Indian way of expressing the longitude of the Sun as 55 signs 56 degrees 33 minutes .55 signs havebeen completed when a planet is placed in *isces and the Sun in this case is 56 degrees33 minutes into the sign of *isces!/ (his can be a point of confusion as there will besome that will thin# of *isces as the 53th sign but in fact only 55 signs have actuallybeen completed/! completed/! (he longitude of the 0oon placed in 8emini can be expressed as 3signs 7 degrees and 67 minutes .here again placement in 8emini means 3 signs arecompleted plus the 7 degrees and 67 minutes into 8emini that the 0oon has traversed/!(o traversed/!(o this this one must also add the constant of 12 degrees 34 minutes which in this way of handling the calculation is most easily expressed as 2 signs . 24 degrees x 2 14degrees/ 2 degrees and 34 minutes! Adding these three longitudes we arrive at 5; signs33 degrees and <= minutes!
>xpunging ;4 minutes from the last column and adding it to the degree column as onedegree .;4 minutes one degree/ we get 5; signs 32 degrees and 3= minutes!
$henever the sign portion of the answer exceeds 53 we subtract 53 .2;4 degrees/ andour final figure is 6 signs 32 degrees and 3= minutes!
(his places the yogi point in the sign of ?eo at 32 degrees and 3= minutes! An alternatemethod alternatemethod is to convert everything to degrees with 4 degrees of Aries as the starting pointand add the longitudes directly directly divide the sum by 24 degrees and arrive at the sameanswer! )alculation of the Avayogi *oint : As relative creation exists in duality the existenceof the yogi point implies that an opposite energy must exist as well! Iyer called this theavayogi point and this calculation does not seem to be generally available in computerprograms! It is a simple operation of adding ; signs ; degrees and 64 minutes to theyogi point! &or the above example the avayogi point would be calculated by adding 6signs 32 degrees and 3= minutes to the constant of ; signs ; degrees and 64 minutes!
(he resultant sum is 54 signs 31 degrees and ;= minutes which must be reduced byexpunging ;4 minutes from the minutes column leaving = minutes and then expunging24 degrees from the degree column .31 degrees plus the 5 degree derived fromexpunging ;4 minutes from the ;= minute total/ leaving 4 d egrees and a total of 55signs .54 signs plus the extra sign derived from expunging 24 degrees/! (his gives anavayogi point located in *isces at 4 d egrees = minutes!
*isces 4 degrees 4=minutes
&inding the Yogi @uplicate Yogi and Avayogi: %aving the yogi and avayogi pointsavailable the method for finding the yogi duplicate yogi and avayogi is as follows: (heyogi will be the ruler of the na#shatra in which the yogi point is placed! (he duplicateyogi will be the ruler of the sign in which the yogi point is placed! (he avayogi will be theruler of the na#shatra in which the avayogi point is placed! All of these are based on rulerships according to the vimshottari dasha system only! &or the example above theyogi point falls in the sign of ?eo at 32 degrees 3= minutes putting it into the na#shatraof *urva *halguni ruled by enus! (herefore enus is the yogi of the chart! (he Sunwould be the duplicate yogi as it is the ruler of the sign in which the yogi point is placed!upiter is the ruler of *urva Bhadrapada which spans from 34 degrees of Aquariusthrough 2 degrees 34 of *isces! (he avayogi point is located at 4 degrees 4= minutes of *isces ma#ing upiter the avayogi of the chart! In five instances the duplicate yogi andthe avayogi are the same planet! (his fact will color some of the principles detailedbelow! In two instances the yogi and the duplicate yogi are the same planet! A shortcutmethod of finding the avayogi once you #now the yogi is by counting ; inclusively fromthe yogi planet in vimshottari dasha sequence order! &or the above example enuswould be the starting point as the yogi and counting inclusively in the order of enusSun 0oon 0ars Cahu and upiter you would arrive at upiter as sixth from enus! (rinal na#shatras of the yogi and avayogi na#shatra : In this methodology it isalso important to be aware that each planet in the vimshottari dasha scheme rules threena#shatras! &or a given chart the na#shatra containing the actual yogi or avayogi pointis the most important! %owever results can also be seen when considering the twoother trinal na#shatras for each of the respective points! In the example above thena#shatras of Bharani and *urvashadra can also be indicative of prosperity and thena#shatras of *urnavasu and isha#a can be obstructive in this regard! *rinciples of *rosperity: 9nce these calculations have been accomplished theintriguing process of applying these points to a given chart can begin! >ach principle willbe stated below with an illustration so that the methodology is clear! (here will not bean attempt at any further analysis of the chart other than to illustrate the principle andcomment where necessary on the life experience with respect to prosperity! As with anyother set of jyotish principles good common astrological sense needs to be applied!(here is a vast difference between a yogi planet that is in its own sign vargottama in agood house and unafflicted and one that is debilitated in dusthana combust andafflicted! Another factor to be aware of is that it is often the tendency when introducedto a new principle to immediately examine charts for example in this case of wealthyindividuals and see if these principles apply! A true test of the validity of these principleswould be to examine charts where these combinations exist and see if they manifest inprosperity or povertyD however one should note that there are many significations thatcan support prosperity and it does not necessarily follow that all people who have wealthwill have these particular indicators! Still it S%9E?@ be the case that people with thecombinations listed below manifest the indicated results in a comfortable majority of thecases .although this is subject to the greater context in which this wor# is embeddedwhich will be unfolded in future writings!/&inally it is important to remember that the yogi and avayogi will give results according totheir condition or strength! yotishis evaluate strength in different ways and in accordancewith their own experience and training! It is not my purpose to elaborate on this topic in thecontext of this paper but it is important to bear in mind that for maximum expression of theprosperity indicators the yogi and duplicate yogi should be strong and well located!?i#ewise for maximum expression of lac# of prosperity the avayogi should be strong andwell placed! In this system the wea#er the avayogi the less it will obstruct prosperity! (he charts of private parties listed below have some or all of the birth detailswithheld to maintain confidentiality!
*rinciple 5: If the ascending degree of the horoscope is placed in the na#shatraof the yogi point the person will be predisposed towards material prosperity!(his will be all the more mar#ed if the yogi is strong and favorably placed forgood results! Above is the birth chart of (ony Blair . ; th of 0ay in5172 at ;!52 A0 in >dinburgh Scotland 2degrees$52 77 degrees + 7= daylight/! (he ascending degree is 53 degrees 62 (aurus! (he yogi point is 52 degrees 6< (aurus!(he 0oon is the yogi and it is noteworthy that it is well placed in the 1 th house in its ownna#shatra .and therefore one of the trinal na#shatras of the
yogi point/ of Shravana!enus is the duplicate yogi exalted in the 55 th house and in a parivartana yoga withupiter who is placed in the ascendant with dig bala!
*rinciple 3: If the ascending degree of the horoscope is placed in the na#shatraof the avayogi point the person will tend toward material deprivation! (his willbe more mar#ed if the avayogi is strong and able to give its obstructive results !*lease note that in the cases where the avayogi and the duplicate yogi are the sameplanet this principle does not apply! In the chart of this individual the avayogi na#shatra isArdra and the ascendant degree falls into this na#shatra! (his person though capable of bringing in some good income has shown a mar#ed propensity towards wild spendingand financial irresponsibility and is currently without resources! *rinciple 2: If the yogi planet is placed in the ascendant there is a mar#edtendency towards material prosperity! (his will be more mar#ed if the yogi isstrong and well disposed! (his is the nativity of $illiam Candolph %earst born April 31th 5<;2 at ;:4= A0 in San&rancisco 533$37 2=+6= standard time! (he lagna is 3 degrees 7 minutes (aurus! (heyogi planet for the chart is enus in its own sign in the ascendant!
*rinciple 6: If the avayogi is in the ascendant there is a mar#ed tendencytoward material deprivation! (his will be more mar#ed if the avayogi is strongand able to give its obstructive results! (he chart given for principle 3 also has the configuration listed in the above principle!(he avayogi of the chart is Cahu which is placed in the ascendant! ! *rinciple 7: If the yogi planet is the lord of the ascendant and well placed thenative is pre'disposed toward material prosperity! (his principle is somewhatless powerful than the principles involving the yogi listed above! (he birth chart of ac# +ic#laus is shown above! %e was born anuary 35st 5164 at 2!54A0 in )olumbus 9hio <2$44 21+7< Standard (ime! (he lagna degree is 5 degree 64Scorpio! (he lagna lord 0ars is the yogi of the chart well placed in the 7th house in thecompany of the 3nd and 7th lord and friend upiter! *rinciple ;: If the avayogi is the lord of the ascendant the native will tendtoward material deprivation! (his will be more mar#ed if the avayogi is strongand able to give its obstructive results! (his principle is somewhat lesspowerful than the avayogi principles listed above! (his person was born into a relatively comfortable family but has had a series of menial jobs and an income level well below the standard of his family and friends! Saturn is theavayogi of the chart!
*rinciple =: A connection between the yogi and the d uplicate yogi byconjunction mutual aspect etc! creates a powerful yoga for prosperity! If thesetwo planets are also forming other yogas indicating material gains this associationgreatly augments the indications of those yogas! (he extent of the effect is again dependent on the strength of the planets involved and their ability to realiFe theirpotential in the chart!(he yogi of the chart is enus and the duplicate yogi is 0ars! (hey are conjoined in theascendant enlivening principle 2 as well as principle =! enus is the yoga#ara#a for this)apricorn ascendant and the duplicate yogi 0ars is exalted! Both of these planets formseveral other yogas for success and prosperity! (his person has the experience of abundant financial resources! )onclusion and food for thought: (his has been an introduction to some of the basicprinciples of Iyer"s methods that incline a chart towards prosperity or poverty! 0anyother factors play into these dynamics including the influence of the yogi duplicate yogiand avayogi as participants in yoga combinations their influence by transits the effectsof their dasha periods their role in divisional chart analysis etc! &or example considerthe situation where the yogi planet is transiting the yogi na#shatra during its dasha! (hiscan be a powerful indication for timing a prosperous period! )onsider also the timeswhen by transit the duplicate yogi and the yogi reform a yoga combination present inthe natal chart! (his too may lead to stri#ing material success! (hese are topics to bepresented in more detail for future study and consideration!Initially the most effective way to gain s#ills in applying these principles is to find thosecharts in which they operate cleanly and elegantly! In these cases the results should beself evident! $hen you find charts that are not wor#ing put them aside for future study! As more principles are introduced and assimilated you may find that these problemcharts become excellent examples of more subtle and interesting dynamics!
