When it comes to the study and teachings of philosophy, few cultures have had such a long and varied history as the Chinese. For generations, the Chinese people have used some of these philosophies for everything from answering simple everyday questions to determining the path of an individual's life. To this day, these philosophies are still in use. There is one school of Chinese philosophy called the Changing Hexagram Divination Method. The source of the Changing Hexagram Divination Method is derived from what is known as the Yi Jing. Literally translated, it means the Classic of Change. The Yi Jing is one of the oldest books in Chinese culture or history. With its ancient writing style, later generations have found it difficult to understand. It is often viewed as profound, mysterious, and difficult to penetrate. However, the concept surrounding of the Classic of Change is a simple one: there are infinite changes in the universe, yet the universe itself never changes. All beings and all things are in a constant state of change. For example, every year brings the changing of seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. After winter, the process starts over again with the return of spring. While this is change, it reveals an unchanging nature. Look at the universe: there are infinite changes every day, yet the universe never goes off track. That is its unchanging nature and demonstrates the simplicity of it all. II
The Classic of Change is not what most people may think. It is not so mysterious, unpredictable and difficult to understand. In the journey of life, we often experience times of doubt, confusion, and feeling lost. What should we do when facingthis type of situation? For example, a husband and a wife are on the verge of splitting up. Should they separate, or stay together? Or, perhaps a business owner is in urgent need of financial resources, but there is no help nearby. Should he maintain the company or declare bankruptcy? These are difficult decisions to make. The Changing Hexagram Divination Method can help by predicting what may happen. It can give guidelines for coping with difficult situations or insight into good ones. This book is not for the scholar to study or research the Yi Jing in all of its wisdom. However, it does provide a simple method for the reader to predict the answers to their questions and to help others. Besides resolving confusion and doubt, it also provides a fun hobby for those interested in the ancient art of divination.

The Coin Method Of Yi Jing Divination
One simple and common method of asking advice from the Yi Jing involves the use of three coins. This method is described below.
Phrasing questions It is better not to ask yes/no or either/or questions. You can phrase questions like this: What would be the results if I were to marry this person? Describe my relationship with Thomas. What do I need to do or understand to make this marriage better? Two Cautions When you ask, try not to be attached to the results that you want. This will only muddy your ability to connect with the Yi Jing, and leave you with an inaccurate interpretation. Do not repeat a question to the Yi Jing in a short period of time. There is no point in re-asking until you get the answer you want. The first answer is the most accurate answer. Even if you don’t totally understand it now, it may make sense in time. Casting an Yi Jing reading with coins There are many ways to do a reading. One of the most common is using three identical coins. Have a pencil and paper ready on an uncluttered table. Decide in advance which side of the coins is heads and which is tails. IV
1. Hold the three coins until they are warm, while focusing on your question. 2. When you feel comfortable, toss the coins, while still concentrating on the issue. 3. Mark down how many coins were heads and how many were tails. 4. Repeat the coin toss five more times, for a total of six throws. Mark each toss on the paper in order, with the first throw on the bottom, and progressing upward with each toss of the coins. Interpreting the coins Inspect the coins and note the distribution of heads and tails. Each side corresponds to yin or yang, and has a numerical value:

At this time, ignore the changing lines. Remember, count from the bottom to top. In the example above, the lower trigram (lines 1, 2 and 3) is yang-yang-yin or Dui. A lower trigram of Dui is read across the second row of the chart. The upper trigram (lines 4, 5 and 6) is yang-yin-yin or Zhen. The upper trigram of Zhen is read from the fourth column. If we find where the Dui row and the Zhen column intersect, we see that the hexagram in our example is number 54. Find the hexagram with that number in this book.
The Original Hexagram (Ben Gua ώ)נ The hexagram that we have just thrown is called the original hexagram. It represents the situation as it exists in the present as a whole. Read its text and ponder its significance and advice or warnings. The Changing Lines (Bian Yao តͮ!) The lines made by 3 heads (total of 9) or 3 tails (total of 6) are called changing lines. They are used in the interpretation for more complex forms of divination. However, for this book, we will only use the changing lines to help us find a future hexagram. The more changing lines there are, the more unstable the situation is. One or two are a relatively gradual amount of change. Anything more can mean drastic change. The absence of changing lines means the situation is very stable, or even stagnant.

The Future Hexagram (Zhi Gua ̝)נ The future hexagram is made by transforming the changing lines to their opposite, while leaving the other lines alone.

4 3 2 1 The text of the future hexagram is also read. It represents the probable direction of events. However, this future is not fated. If warnings are heeded, undesirable events may be avoided. The timing of this future depends on the time frame you had in mind when asking the question.

The Categories of Readings in this Book Each hexagram gives the original words of the Yi Jing, which are often quite mysterious. Then this book provided an overall meaning for the hexagram, which is general, but practical. Finally, there are three categories related to love and the family: Love: This category relates to single people, whether they are alone or are dating. However, this category is for those who are not yet contemplating marriage. Marriage: This category is for a person who is ready to propose to their loved one, and for couples contemplating marriage or moving in with each other. Family: This category relates to those who are already married. It talks about the relationship between spouses and may include additional members of the immediate family. It can include people who are living together in a committed relationship, even if they are not legally married. Example One In the example we gave above, Hexagram 54, the Marriage of a Younger Sister changed to become Hexagram 17, Following. If a married woman asked this about her husband, it would tell her that her husband is being tempted by extramarital affairs. The future hexagram suggests that if she starts paying more attention to him, perhaps she can bring him back to her. X

She asks the Yi Jing and gets Hexagram 5, Waiting, with line 5 changing. This makes the future Hexagram 11, Peace. Hexagram 5 reminds her to be a little more patient. With Hexagram 11 as the future, it tells her that if she can control her temper, they will be well suited for each other. (Hexagram 11)

Example Three A man wants to ask his girlfriend to marry him. He asks the Yi Jing if this is the appropriate time. He receives Hexagram 48, The Well, with the bottom three lines changing. The result is Hexagram 3, Initial Difficulty. For marriage, Hexagram 48 tells him that even though they seem to be getting along well now, some things still need to be worked out. It tells him that the marriage may be possible in the future, if they go slowly. However, Hexagram 3 is more pessimistic. The future holds many difficulties for this marriage. So, the marriage is still possible, but sometime in the more distant future, and only if, as Hexagram 48 warns them, they are sincere and are sure that this relationship is true love.

One must not be over confident and self-centered; otherwise it may lead to failure. Love: Pursue with wholehearted passion; persistence is the key to success in love relationships. Do not be arrogant and vain; being overly confident will lead to failure. Marriage: Generally speaking, marriage can have a favorable outcome, but if your expectations are too high and overly self-centered, it may lead to a break up. Family This indicates a very harmonious marriage. If too much focus is put on the material life, this will create regret later.

Do not swim against the stream; go with the flow in order to achieve auspicious results. But if you go against the flow or take short cuts for fast results, you will find yourself in a very embarrassing and difficult situation. Love: You are easily confused, not knowing which direction to take, not feeling secure with the relationship. Marriage: You will be encountering obstacles, especially in the beginning. If you pursue marriage with great patience and overcome the obstacles at all costs, you will succeed. Family You are in a very confusing situation, be patient and allow time to understand each other. Hexagram Meaning: This is one of the four hexagrams that represent big difficulties. Currently, if you are trying to make things happen, you will encounter obstacles and feel stuck. Be patient and avoid acting hastily.
Love: If you already have someone in mind that you wish to pursue, you will not succeed in a short period of time.
Marriage: You may encounter many difficulties if you wish to be married.
Family You find that you and your spouse are emotionally distant and have difficulties communicating with each other. You may even be on the edge of splitting up.

Hexagram Meaning: Meng hexagram symbolizes that your current luck is confused and uncertain. There is only darkness around you now. Undertaking any action now will not be beneficial. Love: You lack of a deep level of understanding of each other. Be patient and allow time to develop this relationship. During the time of getting to know each other better, you will be able to determine whether to continue or not. Marriage: If you wish to marry, the chances are very slim.

Currently, you should not rush or act irrationally, for it is likely that you will encounter difficulties and danger if you act now. Love: Be very patient. Try to be understanding and show sincerity towards each other. Short tempers will only ruin the relationship. Marriage: Many stressful unresolved issues await you. It is as if this were a hot, humid summer day. The sky is full of dark clouds, but the rain still has not fallen. The only thing you can do now is to wait for it to happen. Family Due to certain materialistic needs, one of you tends to disagree and argue a lot. At the same time, the only thing that can be done is to wait patiently. Hexagram Meaning: Nothing seems to go smoothly. It is easy to get involved in quarrels with others. In some serious circumstances, incriminating lawsuits may be ahead. The best way to avoid this is to make concessions. Take the gentle way; don't try to force the issues. Use forbearance in all matters.
Love: This is not a favorable hexagram. Your loveone is lacking sincerity and respect. You can easily get into arguments with each other and breakup in the end.
Marriage: Not an auspicious combination.
Family Family life is lacking in unity, with constant complaints and bickering . Both of you need forbearance and to strive for harmony. Otherwise you will end up settling in court. Divorce will be inevitable. 13

If you are able to gather forces with others, the situation can change, difficulties can be eliminated, and you will benefit from unforeseen results. Love: You are currently involved in a painful relationship. One of you has been surrounded by many of the opposite sex and is finding it very tempting. Confusion reigns and this person does not know what to do about it. Marriage: There are too many entangled issues involved in your relationship. It will be quite difficult to see the results. Classes at the American Feng Shui Institute: Due to limited seating capacity, reservations are necessary and seats are on a first come first serve basis. To reserve your seat, a $50 deposit is required and is non-refundable if cancellation by student takes place less than three days before class. Please mail-in a check or call us to reserve your seat with a credit card. Balance is due on day of class. Graduates may repeat these classes for $15.00 per day, if seating is available. Please contact the Institute during the week of the class On-Line classes with the American Feng Shui Institute feature: * Easy navigation * Self tests at the end of each module * A discussion board with trained Institute instructors * Audio Clips for pronunciation * An online discussion board * An "Instant Feedback" final exam The on-line classes are self-paced study modules. They are segmented into four, one-week lessons that lead you at your pace, over the four-week course. You have 60 days to complete the course work. As a Student of the American Feng Shui Institute: You will receive a certificate of completion from the American Feng Shui Institute, for the Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Feng Shui classes. Please do not confuse this with certification or licensing, as there are no requirements for practitioners at this time. As a student of the Institute, we are available to assist you with your study. We have an online Bulletin Board for questions and answers, featuring a topic search. You will obtain access to the Bulletin Board upon completion of the Advanced Feng Shui class. Due to the complexity of the courses, Graduates may repeat any class that you have already taken, for $15.00 per day, pending available seats. Please see our online course catalog for the most current course offerings. In addition, if you are located in the Southern California area, you can become a member of the American Society of Feng Shui. The Society has monthly meetings that focus on continued study through practical Feng Shui readings and question and answer forums.
Cancellation and Refund Policy: All institutional charges shall be returned to the registrant less a $50.00 cancellation fee, if cancellation notice is received prior to or on the first day of instruction. Any notification of withdrawal or cancellation and any request for a refund are required to be made in writing. Refunds shall be made within thirty (30) days of receipt of the withdrawal or cancellation notice and refund request. The institute does not participate in the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF). We are registered with the State of California. Registration means we have met certain minimum standards imposed by the state for registered schools on the basis our written application to the state. Registration does not mean we have met all of the more extensive standards required by the state for schools that are approved to operate or licensed or that the state has verified the information we submitted with out registration form.
