Years later, I heard Brandon’s story and I thought about  where I had been and what I had been doing on the day he was murdered. I was sitting in the back of my pagan shop in Obetz, Ohio, drinking myself half blind and feeling sorry for myself. I had opened the store earlier that year. Many citizens of Obetz had such an opposition to the store that threats were made openly in town council meetings. For what I suspect were the same reasons the threats were made, my landlord refused to renew my lease, and I had not yet found a suitable location to move my store. So on December 31, 1993, at approximately the time Brandon Teena was being murdered, I was doing what I thought was the manly thing to do. I was wrong. It is obvious that physical traits do not determine one’s gender identity. Let’s face it, even though Brandon didn’t have testicles, his balls were bigger than most. When Brandon was giving his life to protect and provide for his people, I was fueling my own pity. So what does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be god? If I had been a man on that night, I would have spent that time figuring out how to survive the landlord’s decision such that I might protect and provide for my people. In other religions, god might be presented as something very separate from humanity. But Wicca teaches that our Lord is very tangible. He is just as real as you and I because he is you and I as  well as a great deal more. He is both eminent (external) and immanent (internal). He is the masculine principle of the human soul. In a very real way, god is both who we are and who we aspire to be. There is no record to show us exactly how the archetype of  god was made. By the time humanity could record history, the archetype was already widely used. Our best guess is that his archetype started as a god of the hunt. Hence the horns of Herne, Cernunnos, Pan, and many others.
