PREFACE This information has been compiled under the directions of Dr. Abid Mahmood Director General Agricultural Research through his letter number 9031-56 dated 28.02.2017 in connection with weed Eradication Campaign luanched from March 04-12, 2017. This is a practical guide for graduate and postgraduate students espacially of Agronomy for the identification of weeds. In addition to the student’s readership, it may be a valuable assets to the agricultural scientists, field staff of research wing of pesticide companies, weed researchers and educated farmers. Almost 267 plants have been diagnosed as weeds in Pakistan. Out of these, more than 155 have been reported in the Punjab. Almost 40 plants are acting as very harmful major weeds, other 63 have relatively less importance and 51 weeds of non cropland have been declared as minor weeds. Every weed is biologically a unique entity and should be understood understood in its individual individual context. context. For sustained sustained weed management, a careful study of bioessay of current weedicides was conducted in the Plant Physiology Section , the results of which have also been summarised. The author is deeply indebted to Dr. Mansoor Mansoor Hameed Hameed , the Texanomist depatment of Botany University of Agriculture Faisalabad for proof reading and valuable suggestions. The author acknowledges Dr Asif Tanweer and Dr. Abdul Khaliq for their inputs and brain storming meetings. The patience and keen interest taken by my son Mr. Muhammad Muhammad Nazeef Nazeef Anam for composing and designing the manuscript is also acknowledged. Muhammad Ashiq May 2, 2017
EXPERT’S COMMENTS Weeds are the major problem in gaining higher yield of any crop. Most of the farmers are unable to control the weeds properly. I would like to say that without proper weed control, all the technologies fail to boost up the production. Globally, 30 thousand weed species are inflicting heavy yield losses (Farming Future-Bayer Cropscience 1/2016). In Pakistan, more than 250 and in Punjab more than 150 plants have been reported as weeds. Out of these, these, almost 50 plants are are weel known as absolute weeds. More than adozon have been declared as noxious weeds. It is very impressive that all 150 weeds species have not not only been arrayed accoding to their relative weediness but the most probable weed specific solutions have also been suggested. Several plants like Parthenium hysterophorus are emerging as new weeds under the scenario of changing climate. During the course of Weed Eradication Campaign March 2017, our department arranged several meetings with Mr. Muhammad Ashiq for the preparation of weeds array and declaration of new species as noxious weeds. Our inputs have also been acknowledged by the author. I am glad that the author has made painful efforts to pile up the findings of his research in this ready reference book. This publication attempted by Mr. Muhammad Ashiq is really a marvelous job. It is hoped that the students, teachers, researchers, trainers and farmers may get benefit from this book. The author deserves commendation for his efforts and I congratulate him for compiling such a comprehensive book on weed science purely based on indigenous research.
Dr. Asif Tanweer Department of agronomy University of Agriculture Faisalabad
Key words to use this information What is meant by figures: Numbers allotted to each weed indicate the magnitude of comparative loss. Hypothetic numbers have also been allotted to assess the comparative harmfulness of individual weeds. Numbers Numbers may be equivalen equivalentt to the weed index. index. The array array of weed indices has been given in the descending order. Thumb rule of higher the number, the more the harmfulness may be kept in view. Some of the major weeds have transitional weedy status i.e; in some cases A, AB and on the other locations only B. What is meant by letters: We have assigned letters of A and B categories to those major weeds which are very common and inflict heavy yield losses as individual weeds. Most of the noxious weeds come under A category. Whereas C and D have been alloted to those minor weeds, the overall yield losses due to which are not so significant.
What is meant by the category of weeds: Those weed species which are widespread in the crop lands, act as professional robbers and may sometimes lead to complete failure of crops, are kept into the major weeds as A & B, minor minor weeds as C & D whereas non cropland weeds into the following E-categories: A- category weeds: A-category means the most important, widespread weeds and inflicting heavy losses as individual species in the crops, e.g., Trianthema portulacastrum (Itsit), Phlalaris minor (Dumbi sitti and Avena Avena fatua, fatua, (Jangli (Jangli jai. The symbols of A+, A++ and A+++ and the figures of 20-80 indicate the increase in the severity of harmfulness. B- category weeds: means important weeds which are well known but as single weed species they cannot inflict so heavy losses in entire Punjab. As a local case they may sometimes cause heavy damage to Asphodelus us tenuifol tenuifolius ius (Piazi), Portulaca oleracea (Qulfa) crops, e.g., Asphodel and Chenopodium murale (Krund). The figures of 10-19 indicate the increase in the severity of harmfulness.
Minor Weeds: Those weed species which are not widespread all over Punjab. They are frequently found in the non croplands, may also be found inside the field crops but often unable to inflict heavy yield losses. Minor weeds are also divided int two categories. C- category: C-category means those less important weeds which are found inside the field crops but with lesser intensity. These weeds may
reduce crop yield only in combination with other weeds, e.g., Euphorbi Euphorbia a granulata (Hazaardani) and Xanthium strumarium (Mohabbat (Mohabbat booti). D-category weeds: D-catego D-category ry means minor weeds which are often found in the non-croplands or along the field borders and watercourses. These are primarily non weeds but some of them have the potential to Achyranthes hes aspara aspara (Puthh kanda), behave behave as professi professional onal weeds e.g., e.g., Achyrant Malva Malva neglect neglecta a (Sonchal) and Desmostachya bipinnata (Dhad (Dhadd). d). E-category weeds: Only those weeds which commonly grow in the noncroplands, have been kept in E category. They have been reported as weeds but presently have not potential to be coverted into harmful weeds in near future. Some of the weeds have transitional weedy status. For example, major weeds in some cases are kept in A, AB and in the other locations only B category. BC means this weed is often considered in B category in some cases it may be kept in C category. DE means often considered in D category while in some cases as E category. Is this a concrete order: Changes in soil, climatic conditions and cultural practices with the passage of decades, may lead the major weeds to minor and vice versa. That is why this grouping may be considered as a flexible arrangement under the current scenario of weed situation. It can not be considered as a discrete and permanent classification. classification. Summer annual means annual weed of summer season mainly from March to October. Summer perennial (S. perenn.) means that the weed is basically perennial but flourishes more as a weed in summer season crops. Winter annual means annual weed of winter season crops mainly from November to April. Winter perennial means means that the weed is perennial but flourishes more as a weed in winter season.
Noxious Weeds 1. Those weed species which are declared by the authorities (especially seed certification), as extremely harmful, invasive, competitive, destructive, troublesome, often difficult to control, are called as noxious weesd. 2. Those weed species which have been declared as very harmful or injurious to agricultural crops, natural habitats or ecosystems, or humans or livestock.
