INTRO Here’s the new Vineyard Songbook with songs used at the Vineyard Church St. Albans. This songbook is designed to make it easy for you to learn to play the songs yourself. I want to encourage you to feel free to experiment with the chords used (some notes on the chord charts are optional) to suit your taste. Also, if you like a particular song then pick up a copy. Either buy the CD or find it on iTunes. And then you can get a feel for what the song should sound like, check your phrasing and melody, and see how all the different sections link up with each other. Playing along with the CD can really help your strumming technique and sense of rhythm too. If the key the song is written in isn’t ideal for your voice, then your best bet is to buy a capo and play the same chords, but in a different place on the guitar neck. This can bring songs to life that just haven’t done it for you in t he past. If there’s a capo indicated on the chord sheet this will be it’s usual position.

VINEYARDWORSHIP VALUES There are 3 main values that define the Vineyard approach to worship. Intimacy, integrity and accessibility. And they apply to both the worship that is our lives, and to the worship that is expressed through our music.
INTIMACY VALUE 1 A desire for intimacy in worship has been present since the foundations of the Vineyard movement. In 1977 J ohn Wimber and others began meeting in a home in California. They gathered because they were desperate to meet with God. From this early beginning Vineyard worship around the world has been marked by songs that are simple expressions of love and devotion from hearts that earnestly seek intimacy with God. In the bible the most common meaning or expression for the word ’worship’ is to come forward to kiss’. We seek to love God and get to know him more. Worship is about our relationship with God, so we sing him and him, we open ourselves in intimacy and let him draw close to us. It is what we were designed for.
Intimacy with God will always be our highest calling, when we worship, we do what we’re created for. Intimacy draws us into an authentic humility and holy reverence of our creator. Music is an amazingly precious gift from God and there’s such power in it. We can sing directly to God, it is accessible to everyone, it unlocks people’s hearts, focuses the mind and encourages intimacy in people’s in relationships with God.
INTEGRITY VALUE 2 ‘Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship’ (Romans 12v1)
We must have integrity. We are true worshippers. We worship God all the time, it’s not just about music or Church meetings. If there was ever a time when people have looked for integrity in leaders, that time is now. People need to see consistency and good character in a leader’s life. It’s integrity that allows people to trust you and confidently follow you.
CONSISTENCY BETWEEN OUR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIFE This means we are walking in purity, both in our hearts and in our way of life. We worship when we are leading, we worship as part of the church, and we worship in private. We’re not a different person when no-one is looking. What your life is like, is more important than the music you make.
BEING NATURAL Integrity means we are real with ourselves and everyone else. We lead worship with the gifts we have, doing it out of who we are naturally. We’re not trying to be someone else.
DEVOTION TO GOD IN EVERY AREA OF LIFE Including giving financially to the church, but also beyond that to the poor also; serving others; obedience to God; and walking in honest relationship, having accountability with others. Worship is a way of life. Most importantly, Integrity is valued by God, who knows everything we do and every secret we keep. If we do not have integrity He will despise our worship (Amos 5v23). God doesn’t want us to come to him as we think we should be, but as we are. Even if we’re in a low place. Gifting may get you into ministry, but character keeps you there .
ACCESSIBILITY VALUE 3 ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE Our worship needs to be accessible to people. This means that everyone who comes is able to participate, not just spectate or watch others do it. They need to be able to follow what is happening. The worship leader can’t get so lost in their own expression of worship that the people can’t follow. They must always be considering the people, drawing them into worship, exercising restraint, making it easy to follow. The music should be culturally current, and to a high standard.
ACCESSIBLE TO GOD We must always give God room to break in, to change direction, to speak a word of truth to the church, to do what he wants to do. In this way, we need to be flexible at all times. Come prepared but willing to change. God is the priority in worship. And He is worthy of our worship, it is for Him. His will be done...not ours.
