Additional features
This section describes the following features of the Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS: • Macrocellular network • Cell capacity and coverage area • Cost-effective, multi-purpose platform
3.1 Macrocellular network Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS is designed to be a high-capacity macrocellular network that supports multimedia services. The BTS offers High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) that allows the operator to provide: • data rates up to 57.6 kbit/s over four channels. • real-time services to the end user. Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS also uses General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), which allows the operator to: • maintain connection. • experience increased data transmission speeds of over 100 kbits/s with multiple timeslots. • extend the Internet connection all the way to mobile terminals. The data capacity of each Transceiver for HSCSD and GPRS can be increased by using EDGE in the network. The EDGE enhanced data speed rate is over 470 kbit/s with multiple timeslots for EGPRS. Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS supports effective network capacity building and high-call quality in a dual-band configuration in a single cabinet. Common antennas and antenna feeder cables for both the GSM/EDGE 800, 900, 1800, and 1900 TRXs are used. GSM/EDGE 800/1900 or 900/1800 dual-band configurations are also supported. GSM/EDGE 800/1800 will be available with a future software release. Product Overview 12 (76) © Nokia Corporation DN99109462 Nokia Proprietary and Confidential Issue 6-0en
3.2 Cell capacity and coverage area The RF performance of Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS is also optimised for macrocellular applications. The BTS offers a broad voice and data coverage area due to an improved link budget. Flexible combiner options are available to create high-output power with a minimum number of antennas. To increase the cell capacity and maintain large cell coverage, Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS uses the following features: • Nokia UltraSite Masthead Amplifiers (MHAs)with multiport RX diversity reception schemes (2- and 4-way) • Nokia Smart Radio Concept (SRC) for GSM/EDGE These features further maximise the extremely high BTS receive sensitivity and push the cell coverage and capacity to the maximum. For example, the standard GSM cell range is 35 km; the extended cell range feature allows cell ranges of up to 70 km. Using the extended cell range feature requires EDGE-capable TRX baseband units (which will be available in a future software release). These features also assist in meeting the coverage and capacity needs for many different applications. The high TRX density (with 12 TRXs per cabinet) of Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS has the following benefits: • reduces the total network investment (less sites and equipment per site). • supports efficient capacity growth with the modular design. • allows synchronised handovers and shared frequencies in sectorised sites between cabinets. • permits the combination of TRXs from different cabinets into the same cell. For capacity enhancement and network quality assurance, Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS uses Intelligent Frequency Hopping and Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) speech coding. 3.3 Cost-effective, multi-purpose platform Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS provides a smooth evolution from GSM to GSM/EDGE and WCDMA. The BTS has the capacity to contain both GSM/EDGE Transceiver units and WCDMA Transmitter and Receiver units in a single cabinet. The BTS can be upgraded to GSM/EDGE simply by adding the EDGE-capable BB2 and TRX plug-in units. Triple-mode Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS supports full 3G capability with sufficient voice and data capacity to meet future demands. The platform supports various combinations of GSM, EDGE and WCDMA simultaneously. Product Overview 14 (76) © Nokia Corporation DN99109462

With Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS, the same equipment can be used to build coverage, capacity, or both. The cabinets can be chained to provide a dense, highcapacity site, such as 36 GSM/EDGE TRXs using only three BTS cabinets or a maximum of 108 TRXs using nine cabinets. Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS can be configured to provide coverage to the widest rural area. With established networks, sites can be expanded by using Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS as an upgrade cabinet at existing Nokia Talk-family sites. Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS and Nokia Talk-family cabinets can be placed side by side. Planning for Nokia UltraSite and Talk-family co-sites is easy, because the Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS cabinet fits into the corresponding Nokia Talk-family footprint, and the existing antennas and feeder cables can be used. The actual installation and commissioning of Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS is fast and easy because of the simplified internal cabling and uniformity of unit placement in all cabinet types. In addition, BTS Manager provides easy, stepbystep commissioning instructions and quick integration into the network, which ensures that Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS is up and running soon after installation. Installation costs and required skill sets are kept to a minimum, and revenue flow starts immediately. Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS is delivered to the site with the necessary plug-in units. To add to the ease of installation, all plug-in units are delivered with the required cables for the configuration. In addition, Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS: • can be sectored and expanded easily. • supports multiple sectors in each cabinet. • can be used with various flexible antenna configurations, including multiband and cross-polarised antennas. As a standard, TRXs come with built-in support for 2-way and 4-way diversity. 4-way RX diversity requires two TRXs. In addition, the Nokia SRC for GSM/EDGE with a combination of diversity solutions can be applied in both uplink and downlink directions and used for enhancing radio-link performance.
4.1 Configurations for GSM/EDGE 800, 900, 1800, and 1900 To minimise the number of antennas and optimise the coverage range, various antenna combining options are available for Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS: • combining bypass – no signal combining is used. • 2-way wideband combining – signals from two TRXs are combined into one antenna using one WBC unit.
Product Overview 16 (76) © Nokia Corporation DN99109462 Nokia Proprietary and Confidential Issue 6-0en
• 4-way wideband combining – signals from four TRXs are combined into one antenna using two parallel WBC units in a series with a single WBC unit. • Remote Tune Combining – signals from six TRXs are combined into one antenna with one Remote Tune Combiner (RTC) unit. With two RTC units, 12 TRXs in one sector can be connected to two antennas. A separate antenna for RX diversity is unnecessary. Figure 6.
