Typi ypica call P&ID arrangement f or 3 phas p hase e separator separator ves vess sels
3 phase separato rs are commonly commonly used in upstream oil and and gas indust indust ry to separate o il, gas and water st ream comi coming ng f rom the o il wells. wells. T his t ypi ypical cal P&I P&ID D arrangem arrangement ent can be modif modif ied and and used f or ot her separator vessels as well. 1. Proper Proper vessel vessel symbol sho uld be be selected f irst o f all all,, as sho wn in in the presented drawing. drawing. T his sho uld be selected selected f rom the list list of equi equipm pment ent symbols symbols o n the legend legend sheets sheets of a particular particular project. 2. Separator Separator vess el internals internals sho uld then be be indica indicated ted as per proper s ym ymbols bols o n the legend legend sheets. T hese internals internals can be inlet inlet vane, vortex breaker breaker o n the o utlet lines, demist demist er pads on gas out lets, weirr plate s epara wei eparating ting t he oil and water co mpartme partments nts etc. 3. All All the nozz les on t he separato separato r vessel should then be correctly represented represented with size and f lang langes. es. T his includes inlet an and d out let noz zles, drains, vents, PSV connection and instrumen t noz zles, as as shown in the sample drawing presented here. Typical instrumentation on the vessel would be level gauges gaug es and transmitters on o il and and water water compartments compartments o f the vessel plus pressure gauge and and transmitters lin linked ked to pressure cont rol o r alarms alarms as appl applica icable ble.. 4. Inlet and out let lines are t he next to be drawn up. Line number number,, material material class , size siz e etc. is is t o be correctly assigned to each of the lines. lines. 5. Iso lation valves, spectacle blinds, spacers etc. to be used f or maintenan aintenance ce should be drawn up next next on t he inlet inlet / out let lines. T he spectacle blind blinds, s, s pace pacers rs et c. are usually usually connected right right next to the isolation valves and equipment nozzles, as indicated in the sample drawing presented here. 6. Inst rumentatio n on the vessel sho uld be drawn drawn up next. Typicall Typically y this would include include level gauges,
level transmitt ers, press ure gauges, pressure t ransmitt ers as per requirement f or contro l, alarm and trip if applicable. T he sample drawing presented here only indicates transmitt ers, but generally they are accompanied by gauges f or local indication and also transmitters f or alarms and t rips. 7. Various cont rol valves s hould be drawn up next wherever applicable. Sample drawing indicates level contro l on oil and water outlet lines. Plus pressure cont rol is indicated on the vapor out let to f lare. T hese cont rol valves sho uld be equipped with either a bypass or handwheel as per project st andards, to continue vess el operation in case o f contro l valve maintenance. 8. Drains sho uld be provided either on t he vess el or on the bot to m out let lines f or co mplete draining of the vess el and asso ciated piping for maintenance purpose. Sample drawing has indicated drains on the outlet lines through which the vessel and piping can be completely drained. Usually the vessel also has no zz les connecting it directly to the draining syst em. 9. Vents can be present either on the vessel itself or o n the vapor o utlet line, so t hat the vessel and ass ociat ed piping can be completely vented f or maintenance. Vent co nnected directly to vess el is indicated in t he sample drawing. 10. In mos t cases t he vessel is provided with a blanketing gas connection. T his blanketing connection can be with or without pressure co ntro l. Altho ugh not indicated in t he sample drawing, it is import ant to consider the blanketing gas connection to the vessel. 11. For purging the vess el with nitro gen, a connect ion can be provided directly on the vess el. In so me cases purging can be done with steam. 12. All the guidelines given here are very general and may be modif ied as per specif ic requirements of any particular project.
