Trunk Cables
Trunk Cables COMM/SCOPE Description The application of coaxial cables to underground installations should be undertaken with caution because of the many hazards existing that can damage the cable both during and after placement. These hazards are also a major consideration in selecting the cable for underground use. Any vehicle that can prevent damage to the aluminum shield and center conductor should be a requirement, not an option.
Prefixes
Some forms of damage could be cuts in the jacket caused by sharp rocks or debris, dents caused by rocks or rough handling during installation, and/or corrosion caused by moisture and corrosive elements in the ground.
Suffixes
There are several styles of coaxial cables available from which to select the best design for each application. The following is a description of cable design from most protection to least protection. JACASS Polyethylene jacket, steel armor, flooding compound, polyethylene jacket, Migra-Heal® flooding compound, aluminum conductor, dielectric adhesive (optional), dielectric, Double Clad® conductor treatment and center conductor.

1990 National Electrical Code Requirements for Fire Saftey of CATV Cables The National Electrical Code (NEC) detailing the community antenna television and radio distribution systems is covered in Article 820, Sections 820-1 through 820-53. These codes are safety guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). (NFPA). Coaxial cables installed installed as wiring within within buildings shall be listed as being resistant to the spread of fire in accordance with the NEC. The tables must be marked in accordance with Table 820-50.
Cable Markings & Substitutions Listing Type
Although NEC covers wire and cable installed in factories, office buildings, hotels, motels, apartment buildings, residences, and all cables which pass through any floor, wall, ceiling, or which travel in ducts, plenums, and other air handling spaces, each individual municipality, city, county, or state can decide whether they wish to adopt the 1990 NEC as law. The requirements established by the NEC may be adopted by the state or local building code agencies where jurisdiction of local electrical, building and fire inspector requirements are established and enforced. Local authorities having jurisdiction enforce their own codes. They have the right to accept or refuse any installation in accordance with their local laws. One of the organizations local inspectors rely on to test wire and cable is Underwriter's Laboratories Laboratories (U.L.) All applicable building codes should be reviewed and electrical, building and fire inspection organizations consulted prior to the selection, installation and operation of any cable products.

CATVP [Article 820-51(a), 820-53(a)] 820-53(a)] - Designed for for use in ducts, plenums, and other spaces used for environmental air. This type of cable is commonly referred to as plenum cable and can be used in place of any of the following three levels.

CATVR [Article 820-51(b), 820-53(b)] - Designed for installation in vertical runs and penetrating more than one floor, or cables installed in vertical runs in a shaft. Riser cable can be substituted for the remaining lower level flame tests. CATVP CATVP cables can be substituted for CATVR CATVR applications to maintain electrical integrity of the cable.

About Drop Cable
Drop Cable About Non-Plenum Cable Certain sections of the 1987 update of the National Electric Code make distinctions between cable for general building use and cable for for restricted use. use. For instance, Article 725 for for remote control, signaling and power limited circuits states that general building cable may run without conduit in certain concealed spaces (such as walls) while restricted use cable must run in conduit unless it is run a distance of less than 10 feet.
About Multiconductor and Twisted Pair Cables Multiconductor cable is made up of two or more insulated conductors grouped together to make electronic wiring more practical. Applications include communications, communications, instrumentation, instrumentation, sound, control, audio and data transmission.
For most interbuilding applications, system planners should note that savings can be realized by specifying CL2 cables, as they do not require conduit. Most non-plenum Comm/Scope cables are manufactured with special jacketing and dielectric materials that allow them to to meet the CL2 standards. Using CL2X cables when CL2 cables are mandated may pose an unwarranted safety threat.
Twisted pair cable consists of wire pairs (two insulated wires twisted around each other) grouped in a cable. The pairs of conductors are twisted to reduce crosstalk and to decrease capacitance unbalance. This usually allows higher data speeds than multiconductor cables. Twisted pair is inexpensive and relatively easy to install. It is gaining rapid acceptance as a transmission medium for a variety of networks, although these systems are presently smaller and slower than networks connected by coaxial cable.
About Plenum Cable Plenums are the enclosed air spaces in office buildings which are used for supply or return ventilation and can house the electrical and communications wiring for the building. Because the air space is unobstructed, plenums represent an area where fire can spread quickly if combustible materials are present. Prior to 1975, the National Fire Protection Agency required that all cables running through a plenum had to be encased in conduit. This regulation was an effort to prevent cable from adding to the heat, flames and smoke in the event of a fire. The development of plenum cable revolutionized the way communication cables are installed. Plenum cable is made of fluoropolymers that propagate flame at a very slow rate and have low smoke generating properties. For these reasons, plenum cables are approved by the National Fire Protection Agency to be installed without conduit.

Although plenum cables have a higher initial cost than a similar non-plenum cable, they cost less to install because they do not require conduit. Plenum Cables Basic Construction Plenums are the enclosed air spaces in office buildings which are used for supply or return ventilation and can house the electrical and communications wiring for the building. Because the air space is unobstructed, plenums represent an area where fire can be spread quickly if combustible materials are present. Plenum Cable is made of fluoropolymers that propagate flame at a very slow rate and have low smoke generating properties. For these reasons, plenum cables are approved by the National Fire Protection Agency to be installed without conduit.

Connectors
Aluminum Connector Types Feed-Thru (‘VSF’) A device that seizes only the outer conductor of the coaxial cable. The cable center conductor extends through the connector and is retained within the equipment housing.
Pin Type (‘Stinger’) A connector that seizes both the outer and center conductor. This device has an additional feature not found in the feed-thru type consisting of a solid brass pin which seizes and retains the cable center conductor. The pin then extends through the body and is retained within the equipment housing.
Splice This connector is used to join together two cables. The features of seizing both the outer and center conductors (as in the pintype) are found in this device.
“F” Female This connector is used when an “F” female port is required at the end of the cable. It has identical features as the pin-type and splice in that it seizes both the center and outer conductor of the coaxial cable.
“F” Male This connector is used when it is necessary to have an “F” male connection at the end of the cable. It has the same features as the pin-type, splice and “F” female in that both center and outer conductors of the cable are seized.
Extension This connector is used when sufficient cable is not available for installation. It has a pin which seizes and retains the cable center conductor. The pin then extends through the body and is retained with the equipment housing.
Cable Terminator This connector is used in a cable system where it becomes necessary to terminate both RF signal and 60 Hz AC power. It contains the center and outer conductor seizing features as in the pin-type, splice, "F" female and "F" male connectors.

• Selected plastic materials are used to provide dependable electrical and mechanical integrity at temperatures from -40°F to +170°F • Part number is permanently stamped on connector for easy identification Description The K series is a patented 2-piece design which requires the tightening of only one nut to seize both the center conductor and aluminum sheath of the cable. This design requires less time to install than a 3-piece connector, making installation easier and faster. The W series is the original 3-piece connector design which has been manufactured for over 20 years. The three-piece connector design seizes the center conductor and aluminum sheath of the cable, independent of each other. This is done by tightening two nuts, allowing for full view of the center conductor entrance into the seizing mechanism. The 30 dB minimum return loss has been extended to 1 GHz on pin and splice connectors to accommodate future channel expansion.

Coaxial Connectors CABLE-CON Description These products have been designed for coaxial cables with a characteristic impedance of 75 ohms. Connectors are available for most types of commonly used cables. All connectors are designed and constructed of the finest materials to exacting specifications to insure a mechanically and electrically superior interface. Bodies and nuts are made from 6262-T6 aluminum treated with a chromic acid conversion coat to prevent corrosion. All pins are made of brass and plated with
bright acid tin. Radiation sleeves are either stainless steel or tin plated brass. Connectors are sealed with o-rings made of ethylene propylene to prevent moisture ingress. Ethylene propylene insures long o-ring life even in high ozone atmospheres. Cabel con’s connectors meet stringent quality standards and are tested over a wide range of environmental conditions.

Easy assembly helps to eliminate installation errors. • One wrench size per connector • Trim guides in connector body to insure exact center conductor length. • Metal to metal positive stop eliminates over tightening of connector. • Slim body design allows for easier installation in confined spaces such as pedestals. Smaller wrenches required for easier and lighter handling. • Better heat shrink application over connectors and connection into ports. • Uses standard coring and stripping tools. No need for special tools.

O-zone, ultraviolet and salt spray resistant. Tested and guaranteed in all environments. • Lubricant on all threads for smooth anti-locking operation. • Pressed plastic insulator seals unit from condensation and moisture migration. Top Performance • Meets or exceeds industry standards for RFI leakage and return loss. • All connectors are swept from .3 MHz to 1 GHz. • Environmental testing includes pressure and salt spray tests.
Three Piece Design • Allows for independent confirmation of a secure installation from the seizing of the cable’s center conductor to the gripping of the cable itself. • Visible confirmation of the center conductor entry into the connector body. • True Non-rotational design built into body to keep cable from turning.

Hardline Connectors Amphenol Gold Series Hardline connectors are the best performing connectors available today with 40 dB return loss up to 1 GHz. The connectors are designed to meet all SCTE, Bellcore and other key industry performance and environmental specifications. They incorporate a true non-rotational three piece design to prevent the cable from turning during installation. Other installation friendly features include slim body design for confined spaces, requirement of one wrench size per connector, and metal to metal positive stop to eliminate over and under tightening of the connector.

Description CFTV heat shrinkable tubing is designed specifically to meet the needs of the CATV industry. CFTV tubing provides an absolutely waterproof seal and mechanical protection. CFTV tubing is easy to install and allows clean and easy connector re-entry. The unique sealant that internally coats CATV tubing provides selective strippability and a strong watertight bond to cable and cable jacket, yet, strips fast and clean for re-entry to the connector splice. Heat indicator lines disappear when tubing has fully recovered producing an error free installation without scorching or cable damage. • Digicon connectors were specifically designed to be used with the patented RTC 360 Radial Tamper Crimp tool. • The connectors were designed with Internal Sealing Rings. When conicaly swedged, these rings from an ORing out of the cables outer jacket. • The internal rings reduce radiation leakage, provide an excellent seal for waterproofing, and improve the pull-out strength of theconnector. • F-Conn connectors are manufactured with a lenghthened internal ferrule to support the outer radial swedge and provide a strong electrical connection. • The inner wall of the connector is tapered. This taper aids in the swedging process by ensuring that the connector will not collapse under the axial pressure of the swedge. • Digicon Connectors have a rubber ring in the hex nut for protection against water intrusion. • The Digicon Connector system significantly reduces radiation leakage when compared to standard hex crimps

Description
A unique twist-on feature of the EZ Twist connector makes easy installation possible on all cables commonly used in the home, even fire-retardant cables with light jackets. A polymeric ring, designed for cable retention, secures the cable to connector interface. The outer polymeric shell seats the ring, and locks the assembly on the port.
Raychem’s EZF connector is designed to reduce system RF leakage, maintenance calls and inventory. Prepackaged in an easy-to-handle, pocket-sized cassette, only three connector types are needed; one for RG59 cable, one for RG6 and one for RG11. The EZF connector line has color-coded cassettes and ferrules for easy identification; blue for EZF-6, red forEZF-59, and black for EZF-11. No crimp tools are needed; a common 7/16” wrench will tighten and seal the EZF-6 and 59 connector, 5/8" for EZF-11..
An installation aid is provided to assist in terminating the connector to the cable. Made of clear plastic, the aid allows visual inspection, proper cable location in the connector, and correct center conductor length.

EZ Twist connectors have many of the features installers have come to rely upon with the EZF® connector. They are color coded red for RG59 cable and blue for RG6 cable. The cable is easily prepared with the EZF-T cable preparation tool. EZ Twist connectors save labor and expense while providing high quality, dependable, and consistent terminations.
Environmentally sealed for aerial and pedestal applications. Each cassette of RG59 and RG6 connectors contains 12 EZF connectors; the RG11 cassette contains 6 connectors. EZF connector is compatible with ports that are .280” or longer.
