TIL 1330-2 GE ENERGY SERVICES PRODUCT SERVICE 18 APRIL 2002
TECHNICAL INFORMATION LETTER Reinstall the sound insulation and tape as specified on the drawing, at the next convenient maintenance outage.
COLLECTOR SOUND INSULATION APPLICABLE TO Medium size generator sets equipped with Collector Houses.
The insulation should be installed using the pressure sensitive adhesive attached to the insulation.
PURPOSE
The insulation should be installed using standard hand tools, at the next convenient maintenance outage.
To inform users to perform the standard daily and weekly inspections on the Collector Housings for loose sound insulation.
BACKGROUND DISCUSSION
Contact your local GE Energy Services representative for assistance or for additional information.
On some units, Field Service representatives have reported the sound insulation on the inside of the collector housing becomes loose during operation. In most cases this has been reported on 7FH2 generator sites. The insulation may fall off, and become lodged inside the collector housing, typically being sucked into the collector fan and brush rigging, then ground into pieces. This action may lead to potential damage of the collector system.
RECOMMENDATIONS GE recommends to perform daily and weekly inspections of the collector brush rigging, and if the sound insulation is loose, the loose insulation should be removed and replaced using standard safety precautions. In the event that the sound insulation needs to be replaced, the sound insulation, Drawing 341A6651, is installed using a pressure sensitive adhesive which comes on the insulation. The insulation can be installed using standard hand tools at the next convenient maintenance outage. The collector house surface must be thoroughly cleaned prior to installing the sound insulation. Follow the manufacturers installation guidelines for installing the sound insulation. If the tape used to seal the seams and edges of the sound insulation is found to be conductive, remove the sound insulation and the tape, from the collector house.
